Why I Created Treat Yourself January

After the busy holiday season, so many makers tell me the same thing:

“I want to make something… but I’m tired.”

January felt like the perfect opportunity to slow things down and refocus on the joy of making. Treat Yourself January is my reminder to you — it’s okay to make something just because it feels good.

This event is about:

  • Gentle creativity
  • Small daily wins
  • Rediscovering why you love yarn crafts in the first place

It’s almost time to huddle up and stitch — Game Day 2026 is coming soon!

Bold yellow text reads "GAME DAY 2026" on a green background. To the right, smaller text says "February 8th, 9am-6pm EST with Marly Bird" in white and pink lettering—perfect for crochet or knit enthusiasts planning their New Year’s Eve Countdown projects. -Marly Bird

Oh, Marly! You and your family of BiCrafty minions are a great group. Free patterns, free videos, free help if we get messed up, and all with a smile and a kind word. You’ve outdone yourself this last year and it’s allowed me to get away from the problems of this earth for a little while. Thank you so much for what you do and how you do it.

  2. Ciara says:

    Hi Marly,
Your patterns are great and its wonderful that you are doing these free patterns, supporting people just getting into the craft.
However, your use of AI images, the Treat Yourself January, 93 Free Patterns, and Feeling Burnt Out posters, is incredibly disheartening. There are many issues with AI that are currently harming the crafting community, selling unrealistic and terrible AI patterns to people who don’t know better. As well as selling false images of what a finished product should look like. This is harming both crafters, who don’t understand what they did wrong when the completed work does not look like the AI images as well as pattern makers like yourself, by taking away customers because you can’t make patterns as fast or cheap as AI can.
Not to mention the environmental impacts and the training of AI content on copyrighted materials without consent.
I really enjoy your blog and patterns, so I hope you reconsider your use of AI in the future!

    • Marly Bird says:

      Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to write and for your kind words about my patterns and the free resources I offer. I truly appreciate you being part of this community and sharing your thoughts in such a respectful way.

I want to be open that I am not opposed to using AI, especially when it comes to marketing. AI is here, and as creators and business owners, we all have to decide how we engage with it. I have chosen to use it thoughtfully and ethically rather than avoid it entirely.

The AI images I have used are for marketing only and are not meant to mislead or misrepresent what people can expect. The offerings themselves are free, clearly explained, and always connected to real patterns that I design and support. I am not using AI to create patterns, and I am not passing off AI-generated designs as quality work. I agree that doing that causes real harm, and it is not something I support.

For me, using AI in this way is about learning new skills that help me market more effectively, reach more people, and continue running a sustainable business in a very competitive space. This is not me turning my back on my community. It is me adapting so I can continue showing up, teaching, and creating for the long term.

I understand the concerns you shared, and I respect that not everyone will feel the same way about AI. I am always open to thoughtful discussion, and if you have suggestions for responsible or transparent ways AI can be used in marketing, I am happy to listen.

Thank you again for reaching out and for being part of this community.

      Marly

  3. Connie O Byrne says:

I will definitely be checking in. I almost always have socks on my needles, but I also have lots of yarn looking for a new project. I’m hoping for a sweater!

  4. Dale M Clarke says:

I don’t agree that these patterns are suitable for beginners or relaxing! I believe they are definitely for knitters with a lot of experience. I’m really disappointed and no longer interested in your patterns!

  5. Miriam Remington says:

If these patterns are supposed to be available on your blog for free, then why does a popup come up every time I try to look at them saying. I have to “log in” for exclusive content

  6. Billie Leveillee says:

I was wondering with the Jan 4 pattern. if I use DK would there be much of a difference in size. I am a 2x and plan to make the larger size

  7. Christine says:

I have been trying to get either the free pattern or the 75% off pdf of the You Are Valued cocoon with no luck. I can’t see where it’s free on the page and Ravelry doesn’t give me the discount. Thank you for your assistance.

    • Marly Bird says:

Hi there! Thank you so much for your patience, and I’m really sorry for the confusion earlier today — that one’s on us.

The blog post has now been fully updated, and the You Are Valued Crochet Cocoon Cardigan is officially free on my website. If you refresh the page and scroll to the Daily Free Patterns section (or use the Table of Contents to jump there), you should now see the correct free pattern link available.

There is no Ravelry discount code associated with this pattern today, which is why you weren’t seeing a discount apply there.

If you refresh the page and still don’t see the free pattern link, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help you directly. Thank you again for your grace — we truly appreciate it! 💛

  8. Ellie says:
