NOTES
- Cowl is made in 2 phases. First you create the lower half or the bandana. The second phase is overlapping the bandana and creating the neck portion.
- The puff stitch adds a lot of texture to your project in a wonderful way. If you do not like the puff stitch, you can substitute a double crochet 3 cluster (3 dc-cl) for each puff stitch throughout.
- Use stitch markers to mark the first stitch and center stitch to keep track of each row.
- You can replace a stacked double crochet with 3 chains if you rather not use a stacked double crochet to start your row.
- When working in the round, you can join with a sl st or threading your free loop through the first stitch.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Kembleford Crochet Cowl?
The Kembleford is a free one-ball crochet cowl pattern by Marly Bird… a beautiful, wearable lace cowl worked from a single skein of yarn. The Kembleford name evokes that cozy British village mystery vibe (think Father Brown!), and the cowl itself has a classic, timeless quality. It’s designed as a one-ball wonder… you get a complete, beautifully finished cowl from a single skein, making it both accessible and efficient with your yarn stash.
Is the Kembleford Cowl beginner-friendly?
It’s rated somewhere between advanced beginner and intermediate. The lace elements require following a chart or written repeat carefully. If you’re comfortable with basic crochet stitches and have made a few projects, you’re likely ready to try it. The one-ball format is appealing for beginners too because the commitment is clear and limited. Marly’s video support makes the pattern much more accessible than it might appear from the written instructions alone.
What yarn should I use for this cowl?
The pattern was designed for worsted weight with enough yardage for the full cowl… check the materials section for the exact requirements. For a lacy cowl, smooth yarn with good drape shows the stitch pattern most beautifully. Wool or wool blends are lovely for warmth. The one-ball constraint means you need to choose a skein with adequate yardage. Self-striping or gradient yarn could be beautiful for a cowl since the colors would transition as you work around.
How does this cowl compare to Marly’s other one-ball patterns?
It’s in the same family as other Marly one-ball wonders… designed for maximum beauty from a single skein. The Kembleford specifically features a lace element that makes it feel more sophisticated than a plain cowl, while still being achievable from one skein. Compared to a basic solid-stitch cowl, it takes a bit more attention to work the lace sections. Compared to a very complex lace shawl, it’s quite manageable. It sits in the sweet spot of “interesting enough to enjoy making, achievable enough not to stress.”
Can I wear this cowl different ways?
Yes! Cowls are wonderfully versatile neck accessories. Wear it as a loose single loop around your neck for a relaxed, scarf-like look. Double it for a closer, snugger fit. Slip it over your head and position it lower on your shoulders like a wide collar. Pull it up over your chin and nose on really cold days. The Kembleford’s lace pattern looks beautiful from all angles, so however you choose to style it shows off the craftsmanship. A well-made lace cowl is one of those pieces that feels luxurious to wear every single time you put it on.

I made the Kembleford cowl. I love Father Brown Mysteries set in Kembleford! I had to modify the neck as my neck is very short. Thank you for the fun pattern. I hope it holds up the Illinois winter for me!
