We've categorized the knit hat patterns in various ways, starting with links to beginner patterns and then advanced patterns. You'll also find hats for bulky winter knit hats vs, lighter warm weather hats, hats for babies vs. hats for adults, etc. Of course, some hats fall into multiple categories, and we've listed them by name and link a second time where appropriate.

Beginner Knit Hat Patterns by Marly Bird

If you're just beginning to make knit hats, then these are the best patterns for you. These are also great choices for advanced knitters who want easy, instant gratification projects for mindful crafting.

Absolute Beginner Chunky Knit Hat Free Pattern

Absolute Beginner Chunky Knit Hat Free Pattern

I wrote this pattern specifically with beginner knitters in mind. It includes all of the notes necessary to make it an easy “first knit hat” pattern. Plus it has a step-by-step video tutorial. Using #7 weight yarn, it works up really quickly.

Absolute Beginner Preemie Baby Hat Free Pattern

Preemie Baby Hat Free Knit Pattern for Beginners

Even a brand new knitter can make a hat to donate for charity. This preemie baby hat free knit pattern keeps little heads warm with soft, safe yarn. It works up super fast, since it's such a small item. And yet it's so satisfying to make.

Donna's Denver Football Hat

Striped Stockinette Knit Hat Free Pattern

If you know how to knit and how to purl then you can quickly knit this team spirit hat. You'll work this hat primarily in stockinette stitch. The only thing that makes it slightly more advanced is the use of Kitchener stitch for seaming this bottom-up hat at the end. However, I've included written instructions and a video tutorial for you.

It's So Suite Knit Hat Free Pattern

chevron knit hat free pattern

You might think that the beautiful chevron pattern requires advanced knitting skills. However, that's not the case with this hat. You simply place knits and purls strategically to create the all-over subtle one-color chevron design. The hat requires no shaping and includes a video tutorial for support. This is a one-ball pattern that works up quickly and is great for gifting.

Seed Stitch Knit Hat Free Pattern

seed stitch knit hat free pattern

Advanced beginners can easily work the seed stitch. You just knit your purls and purl your knits. This is a one-ball quick hat pattern.

Advanced Knit Marly Bird Hat Patterns

Honeycomb and Fair Isle Knit Hat Free Pattern

Chill Out Winter Hat Pattern

Fair Isle Knit Hat Free Pattern

This is a Fair Isle knit hat worked in a traditional snowflake design. It's perfect for winter wear, but it's made with a worsted weight yarn, not a bulkier weight, so it's comfortable in varying temperatures. The Latvian Braid is a particularly fun detail on this hat. It separates the brim from the body on this hat that's worked from brim to crown.

Chic Knit Lace Hat Free Pattern

An advanced beginner who knows how to work with charts could probably tackle this knit lace hat. However, it's really designed for intermediate or advanced crocheters. Using baby cables, lace, and the right yarn, you end up with a sophisticated, romantic, knit slouch hat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of knit hat patterns does Marly Bird design?

Marly designs hats for every season, occasion, and skill level! You'll find classic ribbed beanies, colorwork hats with Fair Isle and mosaic patterns, cable hats with bold texture, slouchy hats, hats with pom-poms, earflap hats for cold weather, and lighter-weight options for spring and fall. There are designs for men, women, and children. Marly's hat collection is a great resource because each pattern comes with video tutorial support and is designed with real crafters in mind… achievable, wearable, and satisfying to make.

What skill level do I need for Marly Bird knit hat patterns?

The collection covers a full range! Simple beginner-friendly ribbed hats use just knit and purl in the round. More adventurous patterns add colorwork, cable crosses, or textured stitches. The Keystone Cable Hat and colorwork hats like the Kaleidoscope Harmony are rated adventurous beginner to intermediate. All of Marly's hat patterns come with video tutorial support so you're never left to figure something out alone. Pick the pattern that matches your current skill level and use it as a stepping stone to the next challenge.

How do I pick the right hat size?

Measure around your head just above the ears with a flexible tape measure. Most adult heads are 21 to 23 inches. Hat patterns typically include slight negative ease (the hat is slightly smaller than head circumference) so it fits snugly. Check the pattern's “finished measurements” and compare to your head measurement plus the intended ease. When between sizes, go with the smaller one since knit fabric stretches. For gifting without knowing the recipient's size… a standard adult medium (fits 21 to 22-inch head) works for most adults.

How much yarn do I need for a knit hat?

Most adult hats in worsted weight use between 100 and 200 yards. Simple beanies are on the lower end… textured or colorwork hats that use more yarn or have colorwork sections are higher. Each pattern will specify the exact yardage needed. For colorwork hats with two colors, check the yardage for each color separately. It's always smart to buy slightly more than listed in case your gauge runs larger or you want to make matching items. Leftover hat yarn makes great smaller projects!

What's the best way to make the hat fit perfectly?

Gauge… gauge… gauge! Even a small gauge difference creates a noticeably different hat size. Check your gauge by knitting a small swatch in the round (since circular gauge can differ from flat gauge) and measure it after lightly blocking. If your gauge is too loose, try a smaller needle size. If too tight, go larger. This step is especially important for fitted accessories like hats where the difference between a hat that fits well and one that falls over your eyes can be just a few stitches per inch.

6 Knit and Crochet Trends with Free Patterns for Each of…

March 18, 2021 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

If you're not sure what you want to make next, then you might find yourself browsing for inspiration. Of course, you can sift through Ravelry patterns or P:interest boards. But maybe you'd be better off honing in on some hot knit and crochet trends. Here are six fun trends that Yarnspirations designers have identified along with lots of links and patterns related to those trends.

This post may contain affiliate links. I get a percentage of those sales. Your price doesn't change when you use these links. Thank you for your support.

top knit and crochet trends 2021

1. Ancient Crafts

Check out the Yarnspirations Trend Spotting Lookbook. Yarnspirations asks us designers about our thoughts on current trends, the lookbook shows what we came up with for right now. The first thing up is the trend celebrating Ancient Crafts.

The idea here is to celebrate the crafts are ancestors used in their daily lives. Of course, knitting and crochet are celebrated crafts of the past. But in particular these patterns combine earth tones, ancient motifs, and rich textures.

For example, check out the Lily Sugar'n Cream Mosaic Stitch crochet dishcloth free pattern:

And the free knit pattern for the Bernat Slip Stitch blanket:

2. Playful Abundance

The next section of the knit and crochet trends look book is all about celebrating spring. It's about bright colors, bold prints, florals and lots of layered embellishments. It's playful and creative.

For example, check out the Caron Crochet Petal Pillows free pattern:

crochet petal pillows

And the free knit pattern for the Pom Pom Poppies Blanket:

Pom Pom poppies knit blanket

3. Minimalism

Just because abundance is one of the knit and crochet trends that some people love doesn't mean that it's right for everyone. In fact, the exact opposite – minimalism – is also trending right now. If you're more on the minimalist side, then check out these patterns. They're neutral in tone with clean lines, letting the knit and crochet stitches be the stars of the show.

For example, check out the Lily Sugar'n Cream Lunar Lunch Crochet Placemats.

crochet placemat pattern

The Patons Fade to Summer Gradient Knit T-Shirt is the perfect example of how a minimalist knit design can look super sophisticated. No wonder this is one of spring's knit and crochet trends.

4. Power of Circles

Circles are powerful symbols found all throughout nature. The moon, the sun, the planets … and smaller and bigger things as well. Because it's springtime it's a great time to be in touch with nature. So the power of circles is one of the most inspiring knit and crochet trends.

The Bernat Crochet It's a Phase free pillow pattern celebrating the phases of the moon.

The Patons Breezy Knit Beret is crafted in the round.

5. Quilty Celebration

In addition to the four knit and crochet trends in the Trend Spotting Lookbook, Yarnspirations has rounded up two additional types of patterns that recognize recent trends. The first of those is a trend towards quilts as inspiration, in quilting and sewing but also in knitting and crochet.

For example, check out the Red Heart Scrap Quilt Throw free crochet pattern.

And also be sure to check out the Caron Spring Quilt Knit Blanket.

If you love this trend then you might also like my Crochet Chic Log Cabin blanket pattern.

6. Waves of Neutrals

And finally, neutrals are trending. We saw this a little bit already in the minimalism patterns and the patterns celebrating ancient crafts. However, find even more in the Waves of Neutrals pattern roundup.

Easy, Casual Striped Knit Slouch Hat for Men and Women

March 12, 2021 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

Are you looking for an easy knit hat pattern that works for almost any adult? If so then bookmark the striped knit slouch hat design. It's a unisex designed worked in four colors. It's super slouchy, which makes it cozy and comfortable and casual. Therefore, it's the perfect design for different ages and styles. Work up a bunch of them to keep on hand for gift giving, extra accessories, or donating to charity.

Note: There might be affiliate links in this post. I get a percentage of sales made from those clicks. However, your price doesn't change. Thank you for your support.

striped slouch knit hat

A Super Slouchy Knit Hat

This knit hat is designed to be super slouchy. That makes it a great choice for a very casual look. It's something that you can throw on and it will instantly give you sporty style. It works on bad hair days. It works for all genders. It's a very versatile design that oozes coziness, comfort, and casual ease.

I designed the hat to use Chic Sheep yarn. This is 100% merino wool yarn that is soft to the touch. That makes it luxurious even though the hat itself is casual. It's a delight to knit with. It's also comfy to wear in different seasons of the year.

Playing with Colors in Striping

striped slouch hat free knit pattern

One of the things that makes this hat so fun is the way that you can play with different colors in this pattern. The body of the hat is worked in a main color that starts with the brim and alternates every other row. Then you use an additional three colors to make the other stripes. The result is a sophisticated, easy design pulled together by that main color. And yet you can make a bunch of different designs by switching up the other three colors.

In the original design, I've used subtle, complementary colors that work for almost anyone. They aren't dull, though; you can see the pops of brightness in some of those rows. But you could also go much bolder with different color choices. A hat in one set of colors might look completely different than a hat using a different set of colors. That allows you to use this knit slouch hat free pattern over and over while creating different designs for different people.

This is a versatile, easy knit slouch hat pattern. And the pattern is free. Get it here or click the image below:

Knit Slouch Hat Free Pattern-2

In this hat pattern, you'll work the brim, the body, then the crown of the hat. You'll use knit stitches in combination with kfb (knit front and back) stitches. This gives you some texture while keeping things simple. This is designed as an easy hat pattern for the advanced beginner knitter. Intermediate and advanced knitters will find it to be a simple, straightforward hat design.
