Chevron Knit Hat: One Ball Beginner Knit Hat Free Pattern

March 3, 2021 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

Chevron Knit Hat One Ball Free Pattern

Chevrons are a popular graphic across many different accessories, garments, and home decor. They always come back in style. This chevron knit pattern has a timeless subtle design thanks to the all-over single color. You might think that a chevron knit hat requires advanced skills but you'll discover that beginners can complete this design.

This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase from one, then I get a percentage of the sale. Your price doesn't change. Thank you for your support.

This Is A Great Knit Hat Pattern for Beginners

Beginners who already have a small bit of knitting knowledge will enjoy working with this chevron knit hat pattern. If you're ready to build upon your basic skills, then you can use this pattern to advance your abilities to read knit charts. Here are some of the reasons that this is a great beginner hat pattern:

  • The hat itself has no shaping. Therefore, you don't need to worry about advanced shaping skills. You do knit in rounds, instead of in rows. So, it's slightly more advanced that your basic beginner knit square. But since it's an easy pattern, it's a great next step for beginners.
  • The chevron stitch is just knits and purls. It's all about where you place your knits and purls. So, you'll learn about placing them in the way that creates that subtle chevron stitching. However, you don't have to worry about learning any new stitches or advanced knitting techniques in order to create this design. It's way simpler than it seems when you first look at it.
  • Detailed instructions plus video tutorial. I love teaching and that's one of the reasons that I like making video tutorials to accompany my patterns. It's a great way for beginners to get the help that they need to work through a written pattern. You'll find a video tutorial for this chevron knit hat on the pattern page or you can access it over on YouTube.

Pom Poms Add Whimsy to Chic Style

The chevron knit hat pattern is a chic design. Although the hat doesn't have advanced shaping, it sits nicely on the head for a terrific sense of style. The lush color and all-over chevron design are sophisticated. But, often, when working with chevrons, you want a little bit of whimsy in your design. They can be a bold graphic on their own but when worked subtly like this, you have the opportunity to use other tools to enhance the whimsy. In this case, I've chosen pom poms.

Learn how to make small pom poms using the video tutorial linked to in the pattern. Put one small Pom Pom on either side of the hat. It's a simple way to add a sense of fun to a stylish hat. At the same time, by working the pom poms in the same color as the hat, the effect isn't excessively dramatic. It's still stylish. Of course, you could always use different colors to create a different look. For example, if your sports team's colors are blue and white, you could use white pom poms to top off this look.

A One Ball Knit Hat Perfect for Gfiting

The chevron knit hat pattern is designed as a one ball knit hat. I designed it using Chic Sheep yarn which will keep you warm as you wear it. However, you could use another worsted weight yarn that you have in your stash. Oftentimes we have that one special ball that we're saving for the right project; one ball knit hat patterns like this one are the perfect use for that kind of yarn.

Since the chevron knit hat is a one-ball project that works up quickly, it's also a great pattern to bookmark for when you need to make gifts. The chevron print makes it special and yet the project is simple enough that you can make it as fast as you need to for your gift recipient. In fact, I created this pattern as part of a 3-2-1 gift-along set. You can find the other two projects along with this one over on Yarnspirations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this chevron knit hat really for beginners?

Yes! Honestly, it's a great next step if you already know the basics. You don't need any fancy stitches or complicated shaping, and the chevron pattern is just knits and purls placed in a special way.

Do I need special yarn for this hat?

So here's the thing… I designed it with Chic Sheep yarn, which is lovely and warm. But you can totally use any worsted weight yarn you have in your stash! It's perfect for that one special ball you've been saving.

Can I make this hat into a gift set?

Absolutely! Because it's a one-ball project and works up pretty quickly, it makes for a fantastic gift. The chevron design is special enough, and the simple construction means you can whip it up in no time for your recipient.

I'm new to knitting charts, is this hat hard?

Honestly, this pattern is a wonderful way to practice reading knit charts! Since the hat itself doesn't have any shaping, you can really focus on understanding how the chart translates to the stitches and learn about creating those subtle chevron lines.

What if I get stuck on the pattern?

Don't you worry one bit! I've included detailed instructions, plus a video tutorial that you can find right on the pattern page or over on YouTube. It's my way of making sure you have all the help you need to finish this fun project.

I Knit San Francisco Book Review

March 2, 2021 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

knit like a local book review

There are a series of books called Knit Like a Local that you must check out if you're not already familiar with them. They include I Knit Paris, I Knit New York, and I Knit San Francisco. We'll be telling you all about the latter one today. Even if you're not a knitter, these books offer fun insight into some of the best cities in the world. And of course, as a knitter, you'll also get to enjoy making all of the luxe patterns in each book. Get ready to knit San Francisco.

Note: This post may include affiliate links. If you click on one and make a purchase, then I get a percentage of the sale. Your price doesn't increase. Thank you for your support.

Knit Locally, Live Globally

This is the saying that One Row Press shares in their Knit Like a Local website section. It perfectly sums up what makes these books truly special. Yes, these are knitting books that offer beautiful patterns. But they are so much more than that. They give you a chance to meet the local knitters and designers specific to an area.

Moreover, they teach you about the area, share what the designers love about the place, and provide insight into the many interesting things about these fabulous cities. You get to know the city from a local crafter's point of view. So, whether you love San Francisco and want to dig in and celebrate everything about it or you've never been there and just want to mentally travel there while you knit, the I Knit San Francisco book offers something for you to enjoy.

San Francisco knit patterns

Love knitting books? Check out our recommended list of 40+ 2021 knitting books to buy or pre-order today.

San Francisco Is Built for Layers

San Francisco is a city where the weather changes constantly. It's filled with microclimates. In other words, you can feel nice and warm on one side of the street then cross into the shade and suddenly need to don a scarf. Likewise, turning a corner into a wind tunnel or climbing up a hill can significantly change how warm or cold you feel.

What's better for someone who needs a lot of layers than the ability to knit yourself beautiful accessories? As the editors write in the book's introduction: “a bit of woolly goodness, whether in accessory or garment, is always a welcome layer.”

San Francisco: Sophisticated with a Bit of Whimsy

San Francisco is a sophisticated cutting-edge city. People came here to find gold – actual gold in the nineteenth century and tech gold to this day. It reflects an indomitable adventurous spirit that has never quite left the area. It's unique, because while it's edge and forward-thinking, San Francisco is also whimsical and playful. In non-Covid times, it's filled with street fairs and costumed events and many opportunities for exuberant leisurely joy.

The patterns in I Knit San Francisco capture this city spirit. There are pieces that are sophisticated enough to wear to any work event or fancy dinner. And then there are pieces that feature pops of color or unusual shapes that catch you off guard and make you giggle. That's San Francisco in a nutshell.

Local Inspiration for I Knit San Francisco

Each of the knit patterns in I Knit San Francisco draws inspiration from the landscape (natural or built) and/or history of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Lombard Street socks pattern from I Knit San Francisco book

Some of the inspiration is straight out to a tourist book. For example, Lombard Street (the world's so-called crookedest street) is a must-see San Francisco destination as well as the inspiration for a pair of socks with winding cables adorning them.

continuous cardigan in I Knit San Francisco book

Other pieces were inspired by stuff that is more subtle, things that perhaps only locals might know. For example, do you know about Ruth Asawa who created beautiful intricate wire sculptures in the Bay Area? You can find her work around the city, including in Japantown. And you can find a large crochet wire sculpture she created at the DeYoung Museum. You can also learn about her from I Knit San Francisco. The Continuous Cardigan was inspired by Asawa's looping continuous wire shapes.

Fog City Knit Hat pattern from I Knit San Francisco book

And some of the inspiration comes simply from the essence of the area itself. For example, Fog City celebrates San Francisco's weather patterns. The “colors are chosen to show in slip-stitch patterns and to convey the feel of the fog when it covers half of the landscape, including the bridges of San Francisco,” If you've ever stood looking West towards the Golden Gate Bridge, knowing that it's there but that you can't see it because it's enshrouded in fog, then you'll have a soft spot in your heart for this knit hat pattern.

Special San Francisco Yarn

If you want to knit like a local then you'll want to get local yarn right? That's why I Knit San Francisco has a bunch of information on beautiful local yarn options. For example, Sincere Sheep is based in Napa Valley, the wine region near San Francisco. Hudson + West Co. is bicoastal in San Francisco and New York. And The Dye Project is based in Santa Cruz, south of San Francisco.

It's fun to learn about these different local yarns. And if you can get your hands on them – either locally or through online ordering – then you'll get to really experience the luscious fibers beloved in the Bay Area. But, of course, I Knit San Francisco also provides complete yarn information for each project so that you can make yarn substitutions as needed.

San Francisco Yarn Crawl

In addition to sharing information about local yarn with you, the book introduces you to local yarn stores in the Bay Area. There are so many terrific LYS here. If you ever dreamed of a guide to tell you where to go to shop locally for yarn on your travels, this is that Bay Area yarn shop guide.

The book includes a three-day suggested yarn crawl with information on four San Francisco yarn shops as well as another 8 in the surrounding Bay Area (north and east up towards Napa and south towards Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz.) Those yarn shops are:

  • A Verb for Keeping Warm
  • Atelier Yarns
  • Avenue Yarns
  • Britex
  • Cast Away Yarn Shop
  • Firebird Yarns
  • ImagiKnit
  • Monarch Knitting
  • The Black Squirrel
  • The Royal Bee Yarn Company
  • Yarn Shop Santa Cruz
  • Yarns on First

Special Things About I Knit San Francisco

There are a few more things about this book that you might want to know:

  • It begins with a Land Acknowledgment. This recognizes that the Ohlone Indigenous people are the ancestors of the land we now call San Francisco. It also notes the land that the history of the land the publishers live on. This is an increasingly common, important, way of recognizing Native American history. This book notes that knitting is also about uniting (knitting together). Moreover, knitting relies on traditions from the ancestral past. If we honor this properly, with respect and awareness that the work is not yet done, it can help knit us together.
  • Each designer shares what they love about San Francisco. First of all, this makes the book much more personal than most knitting books. You truly get to know the designers. Second, it really lets you in on interesting information about San Francisco. It lets you feel like you're there. You get some helpful tips (wear sensible shoes in this walking city!) Or, if you already live there, it resonates with you in a way that makes knitting the patterns extra special.
  • Paperback plus Ravelry eBook. If you purchase the paperback from One More Row Press, then you get the ebook on Ravelry as well. Alternatively, you can purchase the ebook as a standalone Ravelry purchase.

The Ebb and Flow knit hat has a sense of serenity about it. It looks like undulating waves. But don't let that fool you: this pattern works up really quickly. You can have it on and off your needles in the same day, thanks in large part to the use of super bulky yarn to craft it. If you're seeking a fast knit hat free pattern as a go-to for a warm, cozy, cute accessory, then look no further, because this hat is the one.

Fast Knit Hat Free Pattern

Working with Super Bulky Yarn

Anytime that you work with super bulky weight yarn, your projects move along at a quick pace. There are a lot of terrific super bulky yarn options out there. In fact, I chose one for this project. It's Red Heart Evermore, a #6 super bulky yarn.

Red Heart Evermore is a roving style yarn. Even super bulky yarn comes in a variety of styles. Roving-style yarn looks like wool roving. This particular yarn is 20% wool and 80% acrylic. Therefore, you do have to hand wash this yarn. It's worth it, though, because it's such a pleasure to work with. Plus it makes a terrifically warm accessory.

An Interesting Cast On

This fast knit hat free pattern is suitable for advanced beginners. The only thing that might be a little bit trickier than usual is the cast on. Doin't worry, though; the free video tutorial for the pattern shows you how to cast on. I just wanted to do something a little bit different for the cast on. Therefore, I went with an altered picot cast on. It looks a lot like a tubular cast on. However, it's not as challenging to learn as a typical tubular cast on. You can also use a long-tail cast on if you prefer.

An Easy Knit Hat Pattern

If you're looking to try something new but still work quickly then this hat offers that opportunity. You can start off practicing this interesting cast on. Then you can go into the body of the work with ease. If you can knit and purl, then you can make this hat. It's meditative or mindless, depending on your approach. In other words, it's easy, and you can put your mind where you want to with this fast knit hat free pattern.

Simple Seaming to Finish it Up

This hat is knit flat. In other words, you don't have to know how to to knit in the round to knit this hat. Instead, you work it row by row. Then, at the end, you follow the instructions to seam it up. It's fairly straightforward and easy to do. And, just like the rest of the hat, the seaming takes very little time.

A Hat For Everyone In the Family

This hat pattern is available in five sizes. You can make it for toddlers as well as older children. Then there are three bigger sizes for teens and adults. Check your gauge to make sure that you're crafting the hat in the correct size. Since the yarn is so bulky, being even a little bit off with your knitting gauge can make a big difference.

Team Spirit Knit Hat: Striped Stockinette Knit Hat Free…

February 24, 2021 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

Stockinette Knit Hat Free Pattern

I designed Donna's Denver Football Hat with a clear mission in mind. Donna and I had made a bet about who would win the Super Bowl. It was Super Bowl 50; she was rooting for the Carolina Panthers whereas I was rooting for the Denver Broncos. The deal was that whoever won would wear a hat inspired by the others' team. I started knitting this striped stockinette hat free pattern when the game began. I finished it by the time that the Broncos won the game. It's a quick and easy striped knit hat pattern worked seamlessly in the round from the bottom up.

Note: this post may have affiliate links in it. If you click a link and make a purchase, then I'll get a percentage of the sale. Your price doesn't increase. Thanks!

Denver Broncos Team Colors

The Denver Broncos team colors are navy and orange. Therefore, I chose Red Heart Soft yarn in Starry Night and Tangerine shades. Additionally, this striped stockinette knit hat free pattern uses white yarn. The result is easy striping showcasing team colors. Of course, you could make yours in whatever colors support your favorite professional, college, or school sports team.

Not a sports fan? That's okay; choose any three colors you love most. Or think about holiday colors: red, white and green for Christmas or blue, white, and silver for Channukah, for example. Maybe red, white, and blue for 4th of July? Or seasonal colors – pastels for a springtime hat, the colors of autumn leaves for fall.

team spirit knit hat free pattern

Easy Striped Knit Hat Free Pattern

This is a quick and easy knit hat free pattern. If you can knit and purl, then you can knit this hat. Most of the hat is made using stockinette stitch. The brim of the hat alternates knits and purls.

The only thing that you might not be used to as a beginner is the use of Kitchener stitch. However, I've described it completely in the pattern notes. Plus I have a Kitchener stitch video tutorial if you need one. Moreover, it's simply used to seam the hat shut at the end. Therefore, it's a nice skill to learn.

Add Pom Poms on Either Side

This hat doesn't just have one pom at the top. Instead, it uses two poms, one on either end of the seamed-together top. This results in a striped stockinette knit hat free pattern that is fun, joyful, and perfect to wear to the game. You can use a Pom Pom maker to make both of these pom poms easily.

If you're not making a sports-team hat, then you might opt to use another yarn color for the pom poms. For example, make the hat in shades of pink and red then use black or white for the poms. Have fun playing with the color options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What inspired this hat pattern?

So here's the thing… this hat was actually part of a bet! I was rooting for the Denver Broncos and my friend Donna was for the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. The loser had to wear a hat inspired by the winner's team… and the Broncos won! I whipped this up just in time.

What yarn did you use for the Denver Broncos colors?

Honestly… I used Red Heart Soft yarn in Starry Night and Tangerine, plus some white. It makes for such great striping! But you can totally use this pattern for *any* team colors, or even holiday or seasonal colors if sports aren't your jam.

Is this hat pattern really beginner-friendly?

Yes! If you can knit and purl, you can totally make this hat. Most of it is just stockinette stitch, and the brim is a simple knit and purl alternation. The only part that might be new is the Kitchener stitch for closing the top, but I've explained it and even have a video tutorial!

How is the top of the hat finished?

Oh, this is the fun part… instead of just one pom-pom, this hat gets two! One on each end where the top is seamed up. It makes the hat look super cheerful and perfect for wearing to a game.

Can I customize the colors of this hat?

Absolutely! That's the beauty of a free pattern like this. You can use any colors you love… team colors, holiday colors, seasonal colors, or just your favorite color combos. You can even make the pom-poms a different color than the hat!
