The Truth About Big Twist Yarn: Who Makes It & Where…

March 13, 2025 By Marly Bird 14 Comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of misinformation floating around about Who Makes Big Twist Yarnโ€”and let me tell you, itโ€™s time to set the record straight.

A collage of six colorful Big Twist yarn products, exclusively at JOANN, is labeled "Who Makes It." Overlaid text teases: "Who Makes JOANN Big Twist Yarn? *spoiler alertโ€”it's not who you think!" Discover where to buy and unravel the mystery. -Marly Bird

If youโ€™ve heard people say that Spinrite (the parent company of Yarnspirations) makes Big Twist Yarn, Iโ€™m here to tell you that is 100% false. I know because I went straight to the source and asked. And guess what?

๐Ÿšจ Spinrite does NOT manufacture Big Twist Yarn. ๐Ÿšจ

I have direct contacts at Spinrite (I was a proud Yarnspirations Ambassador for years), and when I started seeing people spread this rumor, I picked up the phone and got the facts. So, unless they are lying to me (and you), this is what I know.

Now, letโ€™s break it all downโ€”who really makes Big Twist Yarn, where you can buy it, and why private label yarns are shaking up the industry in ways most people donโ€™t realize.

Where Can You Buy Big Twist Yarn?

For years, Big Twist Yarn has been a JOANN-exclusive brand, meaning it was only sold in JOANN stores and on JOANN.com.

But with JOANN closing, that means Big Twist Yarn will become harder to find.

Right now, hereโ€™s where you might be able to buy it:

UPDATE! Herrschners is getting Big Twist Yarn! Learn More Here

A smiling woman in glasses and a patterned sweater holds her hands up excitedly in front of colorful Big Twist Yarn skeins, celebrating its return at Herrschners, with โ€œBIG TWIST YARN is BACKโ€ and the Herrschners logo in the background. -Marly Bird

๐Ÿ›’ JOANN (If Your Local Store Is Still Open) โ€“ Check your nearest location while supplies last.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ JOANN.com โ€“ Limited stock may be available, but this could change quickly.
๐Ÿ“ฆ Online Resellers (Amazon, eBay, etc.) โ€“ But buyer beware!

Since Big Twist is a private label yarn, once JOANN is gone (or stops restocking), you wonโ€™t find it anywhere else unless someone is reselling it. And thatโ€™s where things get tricky.

A chaotic pile of red and white triangular warning signs, each displaying the bold black word "SCAM" in the center, resembles a cleverly tangled mess of Big Twist Yarn. -Marly Bird

๐Ÿšจ Warning About Online Scams ๐Ÿšจ

Iโ€™ve seen a lot of scam listings pop up lately, especially on Amazon, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace, with people claiming to sell Big Twist Yarnโ€”when they actually donโ€™t have it at all.

โš ๏ธ Red Flags to Watch For:
โŒ Prices that seem too good to be true (super cheap or extreme markups).
โŒ Sellers with no reviews or a bad reputation.
โŒ Listings using stock photos instead of real product images.
โŒ Shady websites pretending to be “liquidation” stores for JOANN.

If youโ€™re trying to stock up on Big Twist, make sure youโ€™re buying from a trusted seller. And if you canโ€™t find it, check out similar yarns (Iโ€™ve listed some great alternatives below).

Iโ€™ll keep an eye on this situation and update you if things change. In the meantime, be careful out there!

Who Actually Makes Big Twist Yarn?

The label says it loud and clear: Made in Turkey. That little detail is everything.

When a retailerโ€™s house brand is labeled “Made in Turkey,” it means they bypassed major yarn companies and went straight to the factory to get it made. Thatโ€™s exactly what JOANN did.

So let me repeat it for the people in the back:

โŒ Big Twist Yarn is NOT made by Spinrite.
โŒ Big Twist Yarn is NOT made by Yarnspirations.
โŒ Big Twist Yarn is NOT made by any major North American yarn company.

Itโ€™s a JOANN-exclusive yarn, made for them by a manufacturer in Turkey. Period.

ETA: please note some of the different types of Big Twist might be made in India or Vietnam but the premise is the same–it is factory direct.

Interested to see how many manufactures are in Turkey for yarn? I did a google search, check it out!

This is a screen shot I took of all the factories in Turkey according to Google. ๐Ÿ‘†

Does Spinrite or Yarnspirations Sell Big Twist Yarn?

Nope. Not even close.

Iโ€™ve worked closely with Spinrite for years, and they do not, under any circumstances, produce Big Twist Yarn. If you've heard otherwise, itโ€™s just wrong information.

You wonโ€™t find Big Twist under brands like:

โŒ Bernat
โŒ Caron
โŒ Patons
โŒ Lily Sugarโ€™n Cream
โŒ Red Heart

And you wonโ€™t find it on Yarnspirations.com either.

A Google search results page displays details on "who makes Big Twist Yarn," but a bold, red diagonal text overlay labeled "FALSE" dominates the content. -Marly Bird

I love a good detective mystery as much as the next person, but this one isnโ€™t a whodunit. We know who makes Big Twist, and itโ€™s NOT Spinrite.

And even if you do a Google search and the AI-generated summary tries to tell you something differentโ€”itโ€™s FALSE! Seriously, I went straight to the source, asked the company directly, and they told me NO, they do not make Big Twist Yarn.

๐Ÿ”น Moral of the story? Donโ€™t believe everything you read on the internet (except this. LOL).

If you ever need real answers about yarn, Iโ€™ve got you covered. ๐Ÿ˜‰

What Yarns Are Comparable to Big Twist?

If you love Big Twist Value or Big Twist Soft, but want some alternatives, here are a few solid options:

Comparable to Big Twist Value (Budget-Friendly Acrylic)

๐Ÿงถ Red Heart Super Saver (Yarnspirations) โ€“ A classic, durable, and budget-friendly option.
๐Ÿงถ Loops & Threads Impeccable (Michaels) โ€“ Private label yarn from Michaels with a similar feel.
๐Ÿงถ Premier Basix (Premier Yarns) โ€“ Affordable, soft acrylic in tons of colors.
๐Ÿงถ Bernat Super Value – Bernat Super Value yarn is a premium worsted weight yarn.
๐Ÿงถ Herrschners Worsted Yarn โ€“ Affordable, soft acrylic in tons of colors.
๐Ÿงถ Herrschners Worsted 8 Heathers โ€“ (I love this yarn!) VERY soft acrylic with great drape.
๐Ÿงถ WeCrochet Brava Yarn – Great colors, soft touch, love this yarn!
๐Ÿงถ WeCrochet Brava Tweed – Same wonderful yarn with tweed effect.

Comparable to Big Twist Soft (Drapey & Silky Acrylic)

๐Ÿงถ Caron Simply Soft โ€“ Silky and lightweight, very close in texture.
๐Ÿงถ Red Heart Soft – Smooth and Silky worsted weight yarn with wonderful drape and shine.
๐Ÿงถ WeCrochet Gloss Worsted – Up your crafting with some affordable Merino Wool + Silk.

You might notice that some of these comparable yarns are private label brands too (like Loops & Threads from Michaels and I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby). That brings me to an important industry trend that I think every yarn lover should know about.

Here are some fun patterns you might like that use these yarns:

How Private Label Yarn Impacts the Yarn Industry

Alright, letโ€™s talk about private label yarns and why they matter.

Big retailers like JOANN, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart all have their own house-brand yarns. Instead of buying from established yarn companies (like Spinrite, Lion Brand, or Premier Yarns), they go straight to the factories and have their own versions made.

๐Ÿ”น Why do they do this?
โžก๏ธ Itโ€™s cheaper for them.
โžก๏ธ They donโ€™t have to rely on name brands.
โžก๏ธ They can price it lower than the big yarn companies.

Sounds great, right? Not so fast. Hereโ€™s where it starts to hurt:

1๏ธโƒฃ It Cuts Out Established Yarn Brands. Retailers are ordering less from major yarn companies because theyโ€™re pushing their own yarns instead. That means we see fewer new yarns, fewer innovations, and sometimes even discontinued favorites.

2๏ธโƒฃ It Undercuts Pricing. Private label yarns are often priced just below similar yarns from big brands. That might be great for your wallet, but it makes it harder for established companies to compete.

3๏ธโƒฃ It Replaces Best-Sellers. Big Twist Value is basically JOANNโ€™s version of Red Heart Super Saver. Loops & Threads Soft & Shiny? That replaced Caron Simply Soft at Michaels. Itโ€™s a strategy we see again and again: they copy a best-seller, introduce their version at a lower price, and then suddenly, the original is gone from the store.

Final Thoughts: The Real Truth About Who Makes Big Twist Yarn

I know the world of yarn can feel overwhelmingโ€”especially with so much wrong info out there. But if youโ€™ve made it this far, you now have the facts about Big Twist Yarn:

โœ… Big Twist is a JOANN-exclusive brand, made in Turkey.
โœ… Spinrite and Yarnspirations do NOT make Big Twist Yarn.
โœ… JOANN buys it directly from a manufacturer (possibly to cut costs).
โœ… Private label yarns are changing the industryโ€”sometimes at the expense of established brands.

So next time you see someone saying that Big Twist is a Yarnspirations or Spinrite product, feel free to send them this blog post. Letโ€™s keep our yarn community informed with real facts, not rumors.

And if you ever have a burning yarn question, you know where to find me. Iโ€™ve got the industry connections, and Iโ€™m always happy to get you the truth straight from the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who actually makes Big Twist yarn?

So there's a rumor floating around that Spinrite (the parent company of Yarnspirations brands like Caron, Bernat, and Red Heart) makes Big Twist yarn. That is 100% false! Marly went straight to the source and confirmed it. Big Twist is JOANN's exclusive store brand. While JOANN hasn't publicly disclosed the exact manufacturer, it's a private label product made specifically for their stores… it is NOT a repackaged Yarnspirations yarn.

Where can I buy Big Twist yarn?

Big Twist yarn is exclusively sold at JOANN stores and on JOANN.com. You won't find it at Michaels, Walmart, or any other retailer. The good news is JOANN runs sales constantly and you can almost always find a coupon for yarn. Watch for their big seasonal sales… that's when stocking up makes the most sense. If there's no JOANN near you, their website ships nationwide.

Is Big Twist yarn good quality?

It's a solid budget-friendly option! Big Twist comes in several varieties… their basic acrylic line has tons of colors and decent yardage for the price. It's great for blankets, scarves, hats, and projects where you need a lot of yarn without breaking the bank. Is it the same quality as premium brands? No… but for everyday projects and learning new techniques, it does the job well. It's especially popular with newer crafters who are building skills before investing in pricier yarns.

What types of Big Twist yarn are available?

JOANN has expanded the Big Twist line quite a bit! You'll find everything from their basic acrylic worsted weight to cotton blends, chenille-style yarns, and even some specialty textures. They come in a wide range of colors and the selection keeps growing. Each variety has a different fiber content and weight, so always check the label for the specifics. The worsted weight acrylic is the most popular and the one most people are referring to when they say “Big Twist yarn.”

Can I substitute Big Twist yarn in patterns that call for other brands?

Yes… as long as you match the yarn weight and gauge! If a pattern calls for worsted weight acrylic, Big Twist's worsted acrylic can be a budget-friendly swap. Just swatch first to make sure your gauge matches. The feel and drape might be slightly different from the recommended yarn, but for most projects… especially blankets, scarves, and accessories… you'll get great results. For fitted garments, always swatch and measure before committing.

TWILIGHT TRAILS Knit Mosaic Slippers

Divide Color A ball into 2 balls of yarn.

Make both Slippers the same:

CUFF

With A, cast on 42 (44, 46) sts and divide approx evenly onto 4 double-pointed needles.

Join round being careful to not twist cast-on edge, and mark first st.

Round 1: * K1, p1; repeat from * around.

Repeat this round for 1 x 1 Ribbing until Cuff measures 4ยฝ (5, 5)โ€ [11.5 (12.5, 12.5) cm] in length.

TOP OF FOOT

Slip the first 16 and the last 16 sts onto one circular needle, with a marker at the center separating the two halves. This needle with 32 sts is now acting as a holder until Top of Foot is complete.

Set color A aside and grab second ball of color A to use for next set of instructions. This will allow the first ball of color A to be there for when it is time to use it again, and eliminate extra tails to weave in later.

Continue to work only the center 10 (12, 14) sts for Top of Foot using double-pointed needles or a second circular needle.

Set-up Rows:

Set-up Row 1 (RS): With A, M1, k5 (6, 7), M1, k5 (6, 7), M1 – 13 (15, 17) sts.

Set-up Row 2 (WS): K1 (2, 3), pm, p11, pm, k1 (2, 3).

Purple ribbed knitting project held with circular needles, showcasing a hand with red nails.

Next 2 Rows:

Row 1 (RS): With B, k to marker, slm, work Row 1 of Twilight Trails Mosaic Panel to marker, slm, k to end.

Row 2 (WS): With B, k to marker, slm, work Row 2 of Twilight Trails Mosaic Panel to marker, slm, k to end.

Change to A, and continue alternating colors every 2 rows, keeping 1 (2, 3) sts at each edge in Garter st, and 11 sts between markers in established Twilight Trails Mosaic Panel until top of Foot measures 3ยผ (4, 4ยพ)โ€  [8 (10, 12) cm].

End after a Row 2 or 6 of Twilght Trails Mosaic Panel.

Remove markers and cut B. Continue with A only as follows:

Row 1 (RS): Knit.

Row 2 (WS):  K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 โ€” 11 (13, 15) sts.

Cut A, leaving all sts on the needle.

Purple and blue knitted project in progress with ribbed and patterned stitches on circular needles.

With RS facing, maneuver the circular needle (holder) at Cuff so the first 16 sts (those to the left of the marker) on the circular needle are on the left needle, and the remaining 16 sts (those to the right of the marker) are on the right needle.

SIDES OF FOOT

Use the first color A ball still attached at Cuff for next set of instructions:

Next Round (set-up round): K16, pick up and knit 1 st in each Garter ridge along right edge of Top of Foot, working final row at Top of Foot, k5 (6, 7), pm, k6, (7, 8), working, pick up and knit 1 st in each Garter ridge] along left edge of Top of Foot, k16, join round and mark first stโ€” 65 (75, 85) sts.

Next 2 Rounds:

Round 1: Purl.

Round 2: Knit.

Repeat the last 2 Rounds 4 more times, then repeat Round 1 only once.

Hand holding a partially knitted purple sock with ribbed stitches, featuring colorful heel stitches.

SHAPE SOLE

Round 1: K2tog, k to 2 sts before 1st marker, ssk, slm, k1, k2tog, k to 2 sts before 2nd marker, ssk โ€” 4 sts decreased.

Round 2: Purl.

Repeat the last 2 rounds 3 (4, 5) more times – 12 (16, 20) more sts decreased.ย

FINISHING

Fold final row of sts in half, with first half having one extra st.

Choose one of the following two techniques, Grafting with Kitchener Stitch or Three-Needle Bind-off, to seam the sole:

Grafting with Kitchener Stitch

Turn Slipper upside down, and hold both needle tips in your left hand, parallel to each other, one in front of the other.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail, and thread tail into tapestry needle.

Step 1: Insert yarn needle purlwise into first st on front needle and pull it through, leaving st on the knitting needle.

Step 2: Insert yarn needle knitwise into first st on the back needle and pull it through, leaving st on the knitting needle.

Step 3: Insert yarn needle knitwise into first st on front needle and pull it through, then drop this st off knitting needle.

Step 4: Insert yarn needle purlwise into first st on front needle and pull it through, leaving st on the knitting needle.

Step 5: Insert yarn needle purlwise into first st on the back needle and pull it through, then drop this st off knitting needle.

Step 6: Insert yarn needle knitwise into first st on the back needle and pull it through, leaving st on the knitting needle.

Repeat steps 3-6 only, pausing to pull sts taut and neaten the seam after every couple of inches. Be sure to always pause after a step 6 so as to not lose your place.

When 3 sts remain, work steps 3-5, then fasten off.

Three Needle Bind-Off

Crochet Spring Cleaning – Organize Yarn & Free…

March 7, 2025 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

Spring is here, and that means itโ€™s time for a fresh startโ€”especially when it comes to your crochet supplies! If your yarn stash is overflowing and unfinished projects are piling up, donโ€™t worryโ€”youโ€™re not alone. A little crochet spring cleaning can go a long way in helping you rediscover forgotten yarn treasures, finish lingering WIPs (works-in-progress), and create space for exciting new projects. With these simple tips and tricks, you'll have your crochet supplies organized, your projects refreshed, and your creativity ready to bloom! ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿงถ

๐ŸŒผ Why Spring Cleaning Matters for Crocheters ๐ŸŒผ

Spring cleaning isnโ€™t just for dust bunniesโ€”it's essential for keeping your crochet hobby stress-free and inspiring! A tidy, well-organized craft area makes it easier to plan projects, reduces stress, and boosts your motivation. Plus, when your yarn stash is in order, you'll actually know what you have (and avoid buying yet another skein of the same shade of purple!). ๐ŸŒธ

Hereโ€™s why every crocheter should embrace spring cleaning:

  1. Boosts Creativity: A decluttered space gives your mind room to dream up new projects without being distracted by half-finished ones. When you can see all your yarn and tools clearly, itโ€™s easier to match them to the perfect pattern.
  2. Saves Money: Sorting through your stash helps you avoid buying yarn you already have. You might even find enough yarn for that blanket you've been wanting to startโ€”without spending a dime!
  3. Reduces Stress: A messy space can make crochet feel like a chore rather than a relaxing hobby. An organized stash and a clear workspace create a calming environment where you can unwind and enjoy your craft.
  4. Sets the Stage for New Projects: Clearing out old or unwanted yarn makes room for fresh, inspiring materials. Out with the old, in with the new!

So grab a cup of tea, put on your favorite podcast, and letโ€™s get started! ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿงถ

๐Ÿงถ Decluttering Your Yarn Stash: Where to Start ๐Ÿงถ

Your yarn stash is probably a mix of leftover skeins, impulse buys, and that one skein of luxury yarn youโ€™re saving for โ€œthe perfect project.โ€ The thought of organizing it might feel overwhelming, but donโ€™t worryโ€”Iโ€™ve got you covered with easy steps to tackle it one skein at a time!

๐Ÿ—‚ Sort by Fiber, Weight, and Color ๐ŸŒˆ

The first step is to sort your yarn by fiber type (cotton, acrylic, wool, etc.), weight (worsted, DK, fingering, etc.), and color family. This not only makes your stash look neat but also helps you quickly find what you need for your next project.

A shelf brimming with vibrant yarn skeins, neatly organized by shade from pinks to oranges, greens, blues, and neutrals. A crochet hat form adds charm, while a wire basket brims with yarn. A sign sweetly declares, "P.S. I love you," hinting at a crafty spring cleaning. -Marly Bird

How to Sort Efficiently:

  • Lay out all your yarn and group similar fibers together. Natural fibers like wool and cotton should be stored separately from synthetics like acrylic.
  • Sort each group by weight, from lace to super bulky. This makes it easier to pair yarn with patterns.
  • Organize by color within each weight. If youโ€™re a visual crafter, a rainbow-organized stash can spark tons of inspiration!

Pro Tip: Use small bins or ziplock bags to separate yarn scraps by weight and color. Youโ€™ll thank yourself when you need just a bit of DK weight for a project border!

๐Ÿ—‘ Let Go of Unwanted Yarn โŒ

Be honestโ€”are you really going to use that scratchy acrylic from 2005 or that novelty eyelash yarn you bought on a whim (or purchased because it was freaking AWESOME … Yes, I loved it!)? If not, itโ€™s time to say goodbye.

Options for Unwanted Yarn:

  1. Donate: Local schools, senior centers, and charities often welcome yarn donations for craft programs. Check out organizations like Warm Up America or Project Linus for ideas.
  2. Sell: If you have high-quality yarn thatโ€™s not getting used, consider selling it on Etsy, Ravelry, or Facebook Marketplace.
  3. Swap: Host a yarn swap with crafty friends or check online communities for swap events. One crocheterโ€™s unloved skein is anotherโ€™s treasure!

Pro Tip: Make a ruleโ€”if you havenโ€™t touched it in over two years, itโ€™s time to let it go. Do as I say, not as I do. There is absolutely no way I do this, but according to professional organizers this is what we should do. *shrug

๐Ÿ“ฆ Storage Solutions for Yarn Stash ๐Ÿ—„

Once you've decluttered, itโ€™s time to organize whatโ€™s left. Proper storage keeps your yarn safe from dust, moisture, and (eek!) moths.

Top Storage Ideas:

  1. Clear Bins: Transparent bins make it easy to see what you have at a glance. Opt for stackable ones to maximize space.
  2. Hanging Organizers: A closet shoe organizer with clear pockets is perfect for displaying skeins while keeping them tidy.
  3. Wicker Baskets: These are not only pretty but also breathable, which helps prevent musty odors. Use them for frequently-used yarns or your next few projects.
  4. Vacuum-Sealed Bags: For long-term storage, vacuum bags are a great optionโ€”just avoid using them for wool and other natural fibers that need airflow.
  5. Zipper Bags from Ikea: I love these DIMPA bags from Ikea. They hold a lot of yarn and are easy to store. They are also great for storing my sample projects ๐Ÿ™‚ Here is a picture of my storage room for you to see how I use these bags.
Transparent plastic storage bags, brimming with colorful yarn perfect for crochet projects, are neatly organized on black metal shelves. It's the ideal scene for a spring cleaning session in this tidy storage room. -Marly Bird

Label Everything: Use tags or a label maker to mark bins by yarn weight, fiber content, or intended project. This way, when inspiration strikes, you can find the perfect yarn in seconds!

Pro Tip: Slip a dryer sheet, lavender sachet or cedar block into each bin to keep moths away naturally.

Celebrate Crafting! March is NatCroMo and National Craft…

March 6, 2025 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

March is National Craft Month. Crocheters also specifically celebrate it as National Crochet Month, known better as NatCroMo. It's the perfect time of year to reset and really enjoy your knitting, crochet, and crafting.

What is National Craft Month?

The Craft & Hobby Association designated March as National Craft Month back in 1994. (The organization has now rebranded as the Association for Creative Industries.) Initially, it was simply to celebrate the craft industries.

Over the years, there are ebbs and flows as to how “craft” as seen by the larger worlds of art, design, and making. Celebrating their value is an important part of making sure to recognize that crafters are important and valuable in our society.

There are ebbs and flows into how much people celebrate NatCroMo, too. However, it's always important!

Why It Matters

Crafters play an important role in our world. They offer designs, patterns, and projects to help inspire creativity in every day life. They add to special occasions and holidays with the things that they create. Crafting offers many health benefits, not the least of which is stress relief, so crafters bring that to the world as well.

The world of fine art has sometimes looked down on craft. And even within the craft world, there are divisions with some crafts elevated above the rest. But they're all valuable, meaningful, and important. Celebrating National Crochet Month helps remind everyone of this value.

How People Celebrate National Craft Month

Over the years individuals and groups within the craft community have also found many ways to celebrate National Craft Month including:

  • Follow along with Marly Bird's Daily Inspiration Prompts.
  • Learning a new craft. It's a great time to sign up for craft classes.
  • Exploring a new technique in a craft you already know.
  • Having virtual or in-person craft parties.
  • Knitting / crocheting in public.
  • Yarnbombing.
  • Teaching others to craft.
  • Promoting crafts and crafters online and through word of mouth.
  • Starting new projects.
  • Learning the history of crafts.
  • Watching craft documentaries.
  • Finishing old WIPs.
  • Crafting every day.
  • Participating in online craft challenges, forums, and community discussions.
  • Reaping the health benefits of crafting

Basically, anything that you can think of to do to celebrate the value of crafting is a way to celebrate National Craft Month. Here are some other ways to celebrate. And here's a calendar of National Craft Month ideas.

A smiling person with glasses and an olive green top gestures with hands raised. Behind them, a textured background showcases colorful yarns, highlighting NatCroMo. The words "National Crochet Month" are prominently displayed in bold, pink letters. -Marly Bird

What is NatCroMo?

In the year 2000, the Crochet Guild of America established March as National Crochet Month, or NatCroMo. Crochet is obviously a subset of other crafting. People in the art world have sometime looked down on crafts as the “ugly step sibling” of art. Similarly, crochet has sometimes been treated as the lesser of all the fiber arts. But obviously it's not. And NatCroMo celebrates it to make sure that more people realize that.

How To Celebrate NatCroMo

You can apply any of the National Craft Month ideas to specifically celebrating crochet. You might also celebrate NatCroMo by:

  • Buy a crochet book.
  • Purchase or use a fabulous skein of luxury yarn.
  • Organize your yarn and crochet supplies.
  • Tell someone what makes you love crochet.
  • Join a crochet-along.
  • Find new crochet patterns to enjoy.
  • Become BiCrafty.
  • Check if your local library and/or craft stores are offering anything in person or online for National Craft Month. Many are!

Here are some other ways to celebrate NatCroMo.

March 5, 2025 By Marly Bird 1 Comment

If you love crochet motifs that are full of texture and color, youโ€™re going to adore the Wildflower Wander Crochet Motif! This beautiful square is the star of the Wildflower Wander Shawl by Mary Lane, available in a kit at Herrschners. With its combination of stitches, vibrant colors, and versatility, this motif can easily transform into a cozy blanket, a pillow cover, or any other project you can dream up.

The motif uses three different colors of worsted weight yarnโ€”specifically, Herrschners Worsted 8 Wildflowers (shop here)โ€”but donโ€™t let that limit you. This is a fantastic stash buster project where you can mix and match as many colors as your heart desires!

In this post, Iโ€™ll cover everything you need to know about the Wildflower Wander Motif, including:

  • The difference between puff stitch, popcorn stitch, and cluster stitch.
  • How to join squares, including the crochet mattress stitch and join-as-you-go techniques.
  • Tips for reading crochet stitch diagrams.
  • Inspiration from other motif patterns on my website.

Grab your hooks and letโ€™s dive into this intermediate-level pattern packed with texture and creativity!

Skill Level: Intermediate

To tackle this motif, you should be confident in your crochet terminology and skills. Youโ€™ll need to know how to:

  • Chain (ch) : With slip knot or free loop on hook, yarn over hook and pull through loop on hook.
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop and draw through loop on hook.
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc): Yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
  • Double Crochet (dc) : Yarn over hook, insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice.
  • Puff Stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, [yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] 3 times, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
  • Third Loop: Also known as middle or back bar. Horizontal strand located under the top 2 loops, created by the yarn over when making taller stitches. When working in turned rows the third bar is on the front side of the fabric facing you.
  • Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc) : Yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back around the post of the stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice.
  • Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over hook twice, insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 3 times.

This square is a textural delight, combining all these stitches for a rich, eye-catching design.

๐ŸŒผ Whatโ€™s the Difference Between Puff Stitch, Popcorn Stitch, and Cluster Stitch in Crochet?

If youโ€™ve been confused about these stitches before, youโ€™re not alone! Hereโ€™s a quick rundown:

Puff Stitch

  • Made by yarn over and pulling up loops multiple times in the same stitch before closing them together.
  • Creates a soft, rounded puff.
  • Popular in patterns like the Puff Stitch Cowl.

Popcorn Stitch

  • Worked by making multiple double crochets in the same stitch, then removing the hook, inserting it into the first dc, and pulling the last loop through.
  • Has a more defined, bobble-like appearance.
  • Check out my Confetti Dots Granny Blanket for a great example!

Cluster Stitch

  • Involves partially completing several stitches (like double or treble crochets) before pulling through all loops on the hook at once.
  • More flat compared to puff and popcorn stitches.

Each of these stitches brings a different kind of texture and depth to your project, so donโ€™t be afraid to experiment!

๐ŸŒฟ Shallow Back Post Stitch vs. Third Loop Stitch โ€“ Whatโ€™s the Difference?

Both stitches add texture but in different ways:

Shallow Back Post Stitch

  • Involves inserting your hook under the top 2 loops on one stitch from the back, around the post, and back out under the top 2 loops of the next stitch.
  • It is not as deep as a regular back post stitch.
  • Adds a subtle ridge and is great for borders or textured sections.
  • Example: Check out my tutorial here!

Third Loop Stitch

  • Made by inserting the hook into the third loop (as above for description).
  • Lets the top loops lay to the front of your work, creating a beautiful line.
  • For more on stitch anatomy, visit my blog post: Crochet Stitch Anatomy.

Both techniques could be used in the Wildflower Wander Motif to build an even more special motif!

The Wildflower Wander Shawl uses the crochet mattress stitch for a clean, nearly invisible seam. Itโ€™s a simple yet effective way to join squares without adding bulk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use yarn other than Herrschners Worsted 8 Wildflowers for this motif?

Honestly…, you can totally use whatever yarn you have in your stash! The pattern calls for three different colors of worsted weight yarn, but it's a fantastic stash buster, so feel free to mix and match to your heart's content.

What's the difference between a puff stitch and a popcorn stitch?

So here's the thing… a puff stitch creates a softer, rounded puff by making multiple loops in the same stitch before closing them all together. A popcorn stitch, on the other hand, is made by doing several double crochets in one stitch and then pulling your hook out to pop them all together, giving it a more defined bobble look.

How do I join these motifs together if I want to make a blanket?

Yes! For a clean seam, the Wildflower Wander Shawl uses the crochet mattress stitch, which is great for joining. But if you're looking to make a blanket and want to save some sewing time later, you could totally try one of the join-as-you-go techniques mentioned in the post!

Is this pattern really for intermediate crocheters? What stitches do I need to know?

You got it! This is an intermediate pattern, honey. You'll want to be comfy with basic stitches like chain, slip stitch, half double crochet, and double crochet… but you'll also need to know how to do a puff stitch, work into the third loop, and do a back post double crochet. Don't worry though, there are video links for most of them!

I'm a visual learner… will I be able to follow this pattern easily?

Oh, absolutely! If you love looking at diagrams, you'll be thrilled to know there's a stitch diagram available for the Wildflower Wander Motif. It shows you exactly where to place each stitch and what type of stitch to use… there's even a tutorial to help you read them if you're new to them!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my own yarn for the sock make-along?

Honestly… yes! You don't need to buy a special kit anymore because the kits are no longer available. You can totally use your own yarn stash for the make-along, which is awesome.

Is this make-along free, or do I need to purchase the patterns?

So here's the thing… unlike some of my other make-alongs where the patterns are free on the blog, this Treat Your Feet Sock Make-Along 2025 is a purchase-only event. You'll need to buy the patterns and video workshops, which are exclusively in the Marly Bird House platform.

Will the crochet videos be available for left-handed crafters too?

Yes! I will absolutely make the videos left-handed for crochet, as well as the standard right-handed ones. You got it!

How much does each sock pattern/course cost?

Honestly… not as much as you might think! Each sock pattern is its own course, and you can purchase them for $20 each. They are sold separately, so you just pick the one you want!

I'm not great with technology and worry about losing the course after I buy it. How can I find it again?

Oh, honey, don't you worry! When you purchase something in the Marly Bird House, you just need to go to marlybirdhouse.com and log in. If you ever have trouble finding it, customer service is always there to help you out.
