SHOULDER HUG CAPELET PATTERN

Collar

With Color A

Cast on 21 sts.

Row 1 (WS): P1, *K1, P1; repeat from * to end.

Row 2 (RS): K1, *P1, K1; repeat from * to end.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 24 (24, 24, 24, 26, 26, 26)” [61 (61, 61, 61, 66, 66, 66)cm] ending after a row 1.

Bind off in pattern leaving last stitch on needle. Do not cut yarn.

Neck Edge

Rotate knitted piece 90 degrees and work along the long edge continuing with Color A, you have 1 stitch on the needle.

Pick up and knit 57 (57, 57, 57, 61, 61, 61) sts — 58 (58, 58, 58, 62, 62, 62) sts on needle.

PM and join to work in the round.

Rounds 1-4: *K1, P1; repeat from * to end.

Cut Color A. Continue with the pattern in Color B.

Begin Raglan Shaping

Round 1: K4, pm, k1, pm, k5 (5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7), [sleeve stitches], pm, k1, pm, k22, [back stitches], pm, k1, pm, k5 (5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7), [sleeve stitches], pm, k1, pm, k18.

Round 2 (increase 8 round): * Knit to marker, yo, slip marker, k1, slip marker, yo; repeat from * three times more, knit to end of round — 8 stitches increased.

Round 3: Knit

Round 4 (increase 4 round): * Knit to marker, yo, slip marker, k1, slip marker, knit to marker, slip marker, k1, slip marker, yo; repeat from * once more, knit to end of round — 4 stitches increased.

Round 5: Knit

Repeat Rounds 2-5 for 3 (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) times more, then rounds 2 and 3 once — 114 (126, 138, 150, 166, 178, 190) sts on needle.

At this point, the piece measures approx 45 (50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75)” [114 (127, 140, 152, 165, 178, 190)cm] circumference around the bottom edge; and it measures approx 6.5 (7.5, 8.8, 10, 11, 12, 13)” [17 (19.5, 22.5, 25.5, 28, 31, 33.75)cm] in length from the pick up and knit edge.

You can thread a length of yarn through all the live stitches (like a lifeline) and try on the piece.

The piece should be able to fit over your head and around your shoulders and torso comfortably.

If yours is too snug and want to add more increases to the size you are making, just continue on in the established pattern with the increases every other row. Once you reach the width around that works for you, continue to the final body.

BE AWARE: adding more rounds will also result in more yarn used so you could run out.

If your piece feels just right around your shoulders and torso, continue on to the final body.

Final Body

Next: Knit around until piece measures 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)” [20 (23, 25, 28, 30, 33, 35.5)cm] from pick up and knit edge.

If you want to have more length to your piece, you can add it now. But be aware that the final border adds another 2″ [5cm] to the piece.

Final Border

Round 1: *K1, P1; repeat from * around.

Repeat round 1 for 6 times more or until piece is desired length.

Finishing

Bind off in pattern.

Weave in all ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a swoncho?

A swoncho is a hybrid garment… somewhere between a sweater and a poncho! It has the enveloping coverage of a poncho (draping over the shoulders) combined with some of the structure of a sweater (often with defined shaping or arm openings). It's one of those garment categories that emerged from the craft community's love of comfortable, wearable layering pieces. The Prism Path Swoncho takes this concept and adds beautiful colorwork… making it both a wearable and a showpiece.

What skill level is the Prism Path Swoncho?

Despite the description “for all skill levels,” a colorwork swoncho with stranded knitting will be most successful for intermediate knitters comfortable with working in the round and basic colorwork. The pattern is described as accessible, and Marly supports it with video tutorials as part of the Prism Make-Along events, which helps make the colorwork approachable. If you've done any colorwork before and you're comfortable with garment knitting, you're well positioned for this beautiful project.

What yarn is used for the Prism Path Swoncho?

The Prism Make-Along series uses Swish yarn from KnitPicks in both DK and worsted weight options. Swish is a superwash merino that's incredibly soft, has beautiful stitch definition perfect for showing colorwork, and comes in a gorgeous range of coordinating solid colors ideal for stranded colorwork. Check the specific pattern materials section for the exact yarn weights and amount recommendations for your size.

How do I choose colors for the Prism Path colorwork?

Start with one color you absolutely love… that's your “star color” or anchor. Then find colors that complement it with good contrast. For colorwork to read clearly, you need value contrast (light vs. dark) between your main colors so the pattern shows up distinctly. Marly has a full color selection guide in the Prism Make-Along blog posts that walks through exactly how to build a cohesive colorwork palette. The Swish yarn's solid colors make coordinating easier since there are no variegated patterns competing with the colorwork design.

Is this swoncho part of a bigger make-along event?

Yes! The Prism Path Swoncho is the featured garment pattern from Marly's Prism Make-Along 2025 event. The make-along provides community support, video tutorials, a yarn unboxing event, and guidance throughout the making process. Even after the live event ends, the pattern and tutorial resources remain available. If you love making alongside a community with video support, check whether there are future Prism events or whether you can access the 2025 event materials… they make the colorwork much more approachable.

BiCrafty Pattern Pairs: Knit and Crochet Look-alike Patterns from Your BiCrafty Bestie ๐Ÿงถ๐Ÿงต

June 19, 2025 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

Matching styles, two different craftsโ€”because you shouldnโ€™t have to pick just one!

If youโ€™ve ever looked at a gorgeous crochet design and thought, โ€œI wish there was a knit version of that,โ€ (or vice versa!)โ€”youโ€™re in the right place. These knit and crochet versions of the same pattern are what I like to call BiCrafty Pattern Pairs. Designed by yours truly, they give both knitters and crocheters the chance to create the same vibe with their craft of choice. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Whether you're a BiCrafty maker or you just want matching looks across both needles and hooks, these patterns are here to deliver style, drape, and cozy feels for everyone. Letโ€™s take a look at some of my favorite matching knit and crochet patterns that prove yarn love is universal ๐Ÿ’–

A collage of twelve photos shows women modeling colorful knit and crochet versions of the same pattern in garments and accessories, such as shawls, sweaters, and cowls. Text reads "Knit & Crochet Look-alike Patterns by Marly Bird. -Marly Bird

โค๏ธ Why Marly Creates Knit and Crochet Versions of Her Designs

Because Iโ€™m BiCraftyโ€”and I know so many of you are, too! Iโ€™ve learned that some days, I feel like knitting. Other days? I reach for my hook. And I never want to feel limited by the craftโ€”I want the freedom to make what I want, how I want.

Creating knit and crochet versions of the same pattern gives everyone the choice. Whether you're in a knitting groove or on a crochet kick, you can enjoy the same style without missing out. And if youโ€™re new to one of the crafts, these matching patterns are a great way to learn something new while working on a shape or design you already know.

Learn Crochet and Knitting with Marly Bird

๐Ÿงต Whatโ€™s the Difference Between Knitting and Crocheting?

At a glance, both crafts use yarn to make fabricโ€”but the tools and techniques are different:

  • ๐Ÿงถ Crochet: Uses a single hook. You work one active loop at a time.
  • ๐Ÿงต Knitting: Uses two needles. You keep multiple live stitches on the needles at once.

Both crafts have their own flow, texture, and rhythmโ€”and they each bring something special to your handmade wardrobe!

Close-up comparison of knit and crochet versions of the same pattern, divided by a "VS" sign; the left side features bright, intricate designs, while the right shows wider, striped patterns in cooler tones. -Marly Bird

๐Ÿง  Can Crochet Be Made to Look Like Knitting?

Yes! With the waistcoat stitch (also called the split single crochet), crochet can mimic the look of knit stockinette stitch. It's worked by inserting your hook between the legs of the stitch instead of under the top loops, giving it a clean โ€œVโ€ texture just like knitting.

Youโ€™ll often see this stitch used in colorwork crochet or when a knit-like look is needed in a crochet patternโ€”and itโ€™s super satisfying!

๐Ÿ”„ Converting Between Knitting and Crochet Patterns

If youโ€™ve ever wondered if a knit pattern can be converted to crochet (or the other way around), the answer is: yesโ€”but with some adjustments.

Hereโ€™s what to consider:

  • ๐Ÿงถ Gauge and Fabric: Crochet is often thicker and less stretchy than knit fabric. Youโ€™ll likely need to go up in hook size or adjust stitch count.
  • ๐Ÿ” Stitch Translation: Thereโ€™s no 1:1 swap for most stitches. For example, stockinette in knitting might become single crochet or the waistcoat stitch in crochet.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Shape and Drape: Some shapes convert better than others. Rectangles and simple construction are easiest to adapt.
  • ๐Ÿงต Textures & Techniques: Cables, lace, and motifs all look different between crafts. Embrace the unique qualities of each!

If you're BiCrafty, youโ€™ll start to recognize which patterns could translateโ€”and which are best kept in their original form. Or, let me do the work for you by using my pre-designed matching knit and crochet versions. ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿšฌ Which Is Prettierโ€”Knitting or Crocheting?

Trick question! It totally depends on the project, stitch pattern, and yarn youโ€™re using. Knitting tends to give a finer, more fluid fabricโ€”perfect for drapey garments. Crochet brings structure and texture like nobodyโ€™s business. One isnโ€™t better than the otherโ€”theyโ€™re just different kinds of beautiful. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’„

Here is an example of a knit armadillo and a crochet armadillo. Both are cute as can…choosing which is your favorite is impossible!

๐Ÿ™ˆ Are There Any Superstitions About Knitting or Crochet?

Oh yes! Makers are a superstitious bunch sometimes. Here are a few popular ones:

  • ๐Ÿงฆ Donโ€™t knit socks for your partner unless you want them to walk out of your life! ๐Ÿ˜…
  • ๐Ÿ’ Crocheting your wedding dress? Some believe it can bring good luckโ€”others say the dressmaker wonโ€™t marry.
  • ๐Ÿงต Dropping a stitch or undoing your work can be a sign that youโ€™re not supposed to give that item to someone (yep, spooky!).

Take it all with a grain of salt and a big olโ€™ mug of coffee, friend. What are some superstitions about knitting or crochet you've learned?

๐Ÿงถ Is There a Yarn Preference for Knitting vs. Crocheting?

Yarn is yarnโ€”but how it behaves in your hands? That depends on the project and the technique.

  • ๐Ÿงต Knitting: Shows off drape and smoothness, so it loves wool, alpaca, and silk blends.
  • ๐Ÿงถ Crochet: Uses more yarn (on average) and creates denser fabric, so lightweight fibers like cotton or bamboo can be your best friend for warmer-weather pieces. But don't underestimate the value of a nice dk weight yarn for crochet!

When Iโ€™m designing for both crafts, I choose yarns that work well in both knit and crochetโ€”and youโ€™ll always see that info in my pattern notes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are BiCrafty Pattern Pairs?

BiCrafty Pattern Pairs are knit and crochet patterns that are designed to look like each other… you get both a knit version and a crochet version of the same accessory or garment. This is uniquely Marly's specialty as the BiCrafty Bestie who designs for both crafts! It means if you're in a knitting group and a crochet group, everyone can make the “same” hat or cowl in their preferred craft and the finished pieces coordinate beautifully. It celebrates the fact that both crafts can achieve similar looks through very different techniques.

Why is making look-alike knit and crochet patterns harder than it sounds?

Because the two crafts create fabric very differently! Knit fabric is stretchy and drapes one way; crochet fabric is less stretchy and drapes differently. A pattern that works structurally in one craft often doesn't translate directly to the other. Creating true look-alikes requires designing each version from scratch with the craft's specific properties in mind, then checking that they actually coordinate when worn side by side. It's a design challenge that Marly specifically embraces as part of her BiCrafty mission.

Are the knit and crochet versions worked in the same yarn?

Often yes! Using the same yarn in both versions creates the most visually coordinated look-alike pair. The yarn weight and color being identical helps the two pieces read as a matched set even though the construction is different. Sometimes the stitch pattern requires slightly different yarn characteristics for each craft (a very elastic yarn for the knit version's ribbing vs. a smoother yarn for the crochet version), but the pairing is designed so that both versions can use the same yarn successfully.

Which version should I make if I do both knitting and crochet?

Whichever you feel like making today! That's genuinely the answer. The BiCrafty philosophy is that you shouldn't have to choose… your mood, your available time, the specific yarn you want to use, what you feel like practicing… all of those are valid factors in choosing which craft to pick up. Some BiCrafty makers even make both versions of the same pair… one for themselves and one as a gift, or two versions to compare how the fabrics differ. The freedom to choose is the whole point.

Are all Marly Bird patterns available in both knit and crochet versions?

Not all, but BiCrafty pairs are a priority for Marly's design work! Where it makes sense (accessories, garments, certain home goods), she tries to provide both options. Some patterns are craft-specific by nature (amigurumi is primarily a crochet thing; certain cables are unique to knitting). The BiCrafty Pattern Pairs collection specifically highlights the designs where she's successfully created look-alike versions in both crafts. Check this collection for the pairs that are available and watch for new BiCrafty additions as Marly continues designing.

Superwash yarns like Swish DK are soft and durableโ€”but they behave a little differently during blocking. We walk you through steam blocking (our favorite method!) and wet blocking step-by-step in the video tutorials and inside the pattern content.

Pro tip: Always handle superwash wool gently when wetโ€”it stretches easily. And yes, it can go in the dryer… AFTER itโ€™s dry and in a mesh bag (we recommend testing a swatch first!).

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly IS a swoncho?

Oh, great question! A swoncho is basically the coziest combination of a sweater and a poncho. It gives you that comfy poncho feel but with actual sleeves so it fits just right and stays where you want it to. This one also uses mosaic crochet, which is super fun!

How do I get the pattern for the Spectrum Stitch Swoncho?

Honestly… you have a few options! You can get it for free right here on the blog, broken down into 10 parts with videos and written instructions. Or, you can grab the VIP Experience for all the goodies in one place, ad-free. There's also a standalone PDF you can buy if you just want that.

Is this pattern really beginner-friendly?

Yes! It's designed for adventurous beginners and those who are already comfortable with crochet. The pattern is broken into 10 parts with video tutorials, so you can totally follow along at your own pace. Itโ€™s a great way to try out colorwork!

What kind of yarn should I use for this project?

So glad you asked! We used a DK weight yarn called Swish DK superwash merino, and it gives such a lovely, drapey feel to the swoncho. You'll want something similar that has a nice drape to it.

How do I finish my swoncho after I'm done crocheting?

This is a super important step! For superwash yarns like the one we used, you can either steam block or wet block. We have detailed tutorials for both, but steam blocking is our favorite for this yarn. Just remember to be gentle when it's wet because it can stretch easily!

Steam vs. Wet Blocking Superwash Yarn: What Every Swoncho Maker Needs to Know ๐Ÿงบ๐Ÿ’จ

June 3, 2025 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

Colorful graphic with yarn and geometric shapes, text reads: "Marly Bird's PRISM MAKE-ALONG, Prism Path Make-Along, Wash & Blocking, CAUTION," plus a play buttonโ€”perfect for learning about steam blocking vs wet blocking superwash yarn. -Marly Bird

Whether youโ€™ve crocheted the stunning Spectrum Stitch Swoncho or knit your way through the Prism Path Swoncho, youโ€™ve invested hours into colorwork, shaping, and beautiful handmade details. Now that youโ€™re at the finish line, itโ€™s time to block that masterpiece!

But waitโ€”how should you block it? Steam? Wet? Toss it in the washer and hope for the best? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Letโ€™s talk about why steam blocking is your best friendโ€”especially when working with superwash merino yarn, heavy crochet fabric, or delicate stranded knitting.

What Is Blocking and Why Does It Matter?

Blocking is the secret sauce that transforms your finished knit or crochet fabric from โ€œpretty goodโ€ to โ€œabsolutely stunning.โ€ Itโ€™s the final step where you give your piece a little TLC, encouraging the stitches to relax, the shape to settle, and the overall garment to look polished and professional.

Whether you're working with complex mosaic or stranded colorwork or simple stitches, blocking helps even things out and makes your fabric drape just right. Think of it as the moment your swoncho becomes wearable art.

๐Ÿ’จ Why Steam Blocking Wins for Both Crochet & Knit Swonchos

Steam blocking isnโ€™t just fast…itโ€™s smart. It uses heat and moisture to gently relax your stitches, even out tension, and bring drape to life without the risks of soaking your project.

Hereโ€™s why it works so well:

  • ๐Ÿงถ Evens out stitches without over-stretching
  • ๐Ÿ’ซ Preserves yoke structure (especially important for colorwork!)
  • โœจ Enhances drape without dragging out the fabric
  • โฑ๏ธ Quick and low risk, especially for large garments

Whether you're smoothing out your floats in the Prism Path or taming the bold mosaic in the Spectrum Stitch, steam gives you control.

How to Steam Block Your Swoncho

Using a steamer or the steam function on your iron (hovering, not pressing!), gently pass steam over your piece while it's laid flat on a surface. Let the fibers relax. Donโ€™t over stretch. Just smooth things out with your hands and let it cool down before moving. Itโ€™s fast, itโ€™s easy, and it doesnโ€™t risk turning your swoncho into a blanket. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Understanding Superwash Yarn (Before You Block!)

Letโ€™s take a little detour into yarn science, because knowing how your yarn behaves will save you a LOT of heartache.

Superwash merino is soft, smooth, and perfect for swonchos. But itโ€™s treated to be machine-washable, which changes the way the fibers respond to water and heat.

What Makes Superwash Yarn Unique?

Superwash wool doesnโ€™t felt the way untreated wool does. Thatโ€™s great for care, but it also means the yarn is a little more slipperyโ€”and that slipperiness can lead to unintentional growth, especially when wet.

Soaking it? It might look like a sad, saggy mess straight out of the tub. Drying it? It could stretch into a completely different size if youโ€™re not careful.

Thatโ€™s why understanding how you block is just as important as that you block.

Why Steam Is Best for Superwash

Steam blocking is the gentlest way to tame superwash yarn. Since youโ€™re not saturating the fibers, you avoid the weight that leads to drooping. Plus, the heat helps the yarn “remember” where you placed it without locking it into an overstretched state.

If youโ€™re working colorwork, steam blocking also helps those floats on the back relax beautifully without flattening your stitches.

๐Ÿงบ But What About Wet Blocking?

Look, I get it. Sometimes you just need a full wash. Especially after wearing your swoncho out and about. And yes, wet blocking can be done with superwash yarn. But it comes with serious caution, especially for crocheters.

๐Ÿšจ Wet Blocking + Crochet = Proceed Carefully!

Crochet fabric is heavier, uses more yarn, and when wet? Itโ€™s HEAVY.

Add in superwash merino yarn like Swish DK, and hereโ€™s what happens:

  • Your stitches may look thin and stringy when soaked … they have no plump anymore
  • The swoncho can become gigantic and misshapen
  • You risk turning your handmade wearable into a tent

If you do wet block:

  • Roll in towels to remove as much water as possible … the goal is damp not wet!
  • Work while damp, not soaked … this is very important
  • Donโ€™t overstretch … this can be tricky at the start of the blocking process but try to maintain gauge!
  • Avoid machine washing even if itโ€™s superwash! My rule of thumb is Handmade = Hand Wash!
  • Test a swatch before putting anything in the dryer … you might be tempted to toss the swoncho in the dryer (to plump up the wool) after it has dried completely through blocking. If you do this, please test a swatch in the dryer first so you are not completely messing up your swoncho on accident.

Personal Opinion for this swoncho: Stick to steam unless you're very confident or you absolutely MUST wash the swoncho right away. Your swoncho is worth the extra care!

๐Ÿงถ Knitters, Youโ€™re Not Off the Hook!

Even though knit fabric is lighter, superwash yarn can still grow unpredictably when soaked. Youโ€™ll see:

  • Loss of stitch definition
  • A โ€œstringyโ€ look while drying
  • Surprise size changes if not shaped carefully

โฃ๏ธSteam is still ideal for the Prism Path Swoncho too, especially to preserve the crisp colorwork yoke and keep the body balanced.

How to Fix the โ€œGrowing Sweaterโ€ Syndrome

Okay, so what if you did everything right and your swoncho still feels a little loose?

Good news! Superwash yarn tends to bounce back.

โš ๏ธ Test the dryer process (mentioned below) on a swatch first.
Only after you are okay with the results of the swatch do you proceed to put your swoncho in the dryer!

Hereโ€™s what you can do:

  • Make sure your piece is completely dry
  • Place it inside a mesh laundry bag
  • Toss it in the dryer on gentle, low heat for 5โ€“10 minutes
  • Check frequently!

If your swoncho grew after wet blocking, this can help… but only if you're careful!

This little post-blocking fluff session helps the fibers bounce back to their intended shape and gives you that soft, squishy finish we all love.

๐Ÿ› Wash With Intention, Block With Care

Blocking is your final polishโ€”the step that turns your handmade into a WOW piece.

  • For quick, safe results: Steam wins
  • For occasional deep cleans: Wet block gently
  • For long-lasting wear: Handle with love and patience

No matter what, watch your fabric not the clockโ€”and let it dry completely before wearing.

Care Tips for the Long Term

  • Always hand wash (yes, even superwash!) when it's time to wash the swoncho
  • Never wring or twist the fabric especially when wet
  • Always lay flat to dry
  • Reshape damp (never wet) fabric gently after each wash
  • Light steam touch-ups are your friend

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between steam blocking and wet blocking?

Wet blocking involves fully soaking your finished piece in water (usually with a wool wash), gently removing excess water, then pinning it to its finished measurements and letting it dry completely. Steam blocking uses a steam iron or steamer held above the fabric to relax the fibers without fully saturating them. Both methods set your stitches and open up the fabric, but they work differently on different fibers… and the choice matters a lot for superwash yarn.

Which blocking method is better for superwash yarn?

This is where it gets interesting! Superwash wool is treated to prevent felting, which also makes it more prone to stretching and growing when wet. Wet blocking superwash can cause it to droop and lose its shape… especially in garments. Steam blocking is generally gentler on superwash and gives you more control. Hold the steam a few inches above the fabric rather than pressing the iron down, and let it cool before unpinning. Always test a swatch first if you're unsure how your specific yarn will behave.

Can I steam block acrylic yarn?

Yes! Steam blocking acrylic (called “killing” acrylic) actually works beautifully… the steam permanently relaxes the fibers and softens the fabric. The key word is “permanently”… once you steam acrylic, you can't un-kill it, so test on a swatch first. Hold the steam about an inch above the fabric and never press the iron directly on acrylic or it can melt or go shiny. Done right, steam blocking transforms acrylic from stiff and synthetic-feeling to soft and drapey.

How do I avoid over-stretching a wet-blocked garment?

Always block to the schematic measurements in your pattern… not to “as big as it'll go.” Pin generously, especially along edges that can stretch. For superwash or cotton, which stretch most when wet, support the entire garment when lifting it out of the water (don't let it hang from one end!). Use a blocking board with a grid so you can measure accurately. And go slowly… it's easier to open a piece up more after it dries than to shrink it back down.

Do I need to block every project I make?

Not every single one! Amigurumi, bags, and items that don't need precise shaping often skip blocking entirely. But for shawls, garments, lace, and anything where the final measurements matter… blocking is genuinely transformative. It's the difference between “handmade” and “professionally finished.” Lace especially needs blocking to open up and reveal the pattern. Once you experience what blocking does to a shawl, you'll never skip it again.
