What is Mosaic Crochet?

Mosaic crochet is a colorwork technique that creates intricate, textured designs using simple slip stitchesโ€”and the best part? You only work with one color per row.

On the table, alongside two balls of Brava Tweed yarn in gray and teal, lie knitted fingerless gloves, vibrant crochet hooks, stitch markers, a red candle, and a decorative floral arrangement. A "Cinnamon Dreams" free pattern might inspire your next project. -Marly Bird

NOTES

  • Directions are for size Toddler/ Child; changes for sizes Adult Small, Adult Average, Adult Large are in parentheses. When only one number is given then that number applies to all sizes.
  • The adult average size will fit most adults, especially since the project has a generous stretch.  If concerned about size, measure one of your favorite hats first and choose a size based on that.
  • Project is made from the bottom brim to crown.
  • When working on the body, place a marker every 10 stitches for the repeat.
  • Slip all stitches as if to purl with yarn in back.
    • When slipping stitches be sure to not pull the float too tight or the gauge will get too small.
  • Do not cut colors, carry the color up the inside of the project.
  • If you want to be sure you have a safety net as you knit, adding a lifeline to your project every so often will be helpful. Just to make sure you have a point to rip back to if something goes wrong. (video help).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Twilight Trails Knit Mosaic Hat?

The Twilight Trails is a free knit mosaic hat pattern by Marly Bird featuring a beautiful geometric colorwork design worked in the mosaic (slip stitch) technique. Mosaic knitting uses only one color per round… stitches from the previous color are slipped rather than knitted to create the colorwork pattern. The result is a stunning two-color textured hat that looks intricate but is much more approachable than traditional stranded colorwork. It's one of Marly's Turkey Trot 2025 patterns.

What skill level is the Twilight Trails Hat?

Adventurous beginner to intermediate. You should be comfortable knitting in the round and reading a simple slip-stitch chart. The mosaic technique itself is beginner-friendly once you understand the concept… you're just slipping certain stitches instead of knitting them, working one color at a time. The chart shows you which stitches to work and which to slip each round. If you've made basic hats in the round and want to try your first colorwork, mosaic knitting is the gentlest introduction you could ask for.

What makes mosaic knitting easier than regular colorwork?

You only work with one color at a time! In traditional Fair Isle/stranded colorwork, you carry both yarns across every round and work with either as needed. In mosaic knitting, you do two rounds with Color A (slipping Color B stitches), then two rounds with Color B (slipping Color A stitches). No floats, no managing two strands simultaneously, no tension issues from carrying yarns. The slipped stitches from the previous round create the pattern by peeking through. It's genuinely much simpler to execute than it looks on the finished hat.

What yarn should I use for the Twilight Trails Hat?

Worsted weight in two colors with strong contrast is the way to go. The mosaic pattern needs clear contrast between colors to read crisply. A dark and a light, or two saturated colors that are clearly distinct from each other. Smooth yarn with good stitch definition shows the textured mosaic surface most clearly. Wool or wool blend is wonderful for warmth and stitch definition. And this is a great stash-busting opportunity… two partial skeins of contrasting worsted weight that aren't enough for a full project together make a perfect mosaic hat.

Can I make this hat in different sizes?

Check the pattern for included sizes. Mosaic hat patterns typically need a stitch count that's a multiple of the pattern repeat, which limits size flexibility somewhat compared to a plain hat. The pattern will specify what sizes are included and how to adjust. For the most accurate fit, measure your head circumference and follow the pattern's sizing guidance rather than just guessing. Mosaic fabric has slightly less stretch than plain stockinette, so precise sizing matters a bit more than with a simple ribbed hat.

33 Free Temperature Blanket Patterns (+ Alternative Designs)

January 8, 2025 By Marly Bird 2 Comments

Temperature blankets are a classic way to track the weather a specific place for a set period of time, for example, you might track the temperature in your town every day for a year.. You choose specific colors for each temperature range and then make a blanket using those colors to represent the temperatures. There are no specific rules about the design. Temperature blankets can be made using any pattern you like! Or if a blanket is too much, you might want to make something like a scarf or wall hanging instead. There free temperature blanket patterns (as well as some for temperature scarves and wall hangings) will get you started on your project.

Temperature Blanket Patterns and More Projects

Gathered here are 33 free crochet and knit patterns to make temperature blankets or other projects you want to make!

Plain Stitch Pattern Blankets

These blankets have stitch patterns that are more interesting than plain garter stitch or single crochet, but they still let the colors you choose for the temperatures be the star. When you have a lot of different colors like you do with a temperature blanket you often want simpler patterns. More complex stitch patterns like cables or lace will get lost among all the colors.

You may need to modify the patterns some so you do the right number of rows for your time period and your temperature. If you're just doing the average temperature per day for a year, for example, then you'll have 365 rows (or 366 rows for a leap year). If you're doing the high and low for each day for a year, then you'll have 730 rows (or 732 rows for a leap year).

Unique Patterns for Temperature Blankets

Sometimes you want to be a little more inventive with your temperature blanket pattern. These eight patterns are designed to let you be even more creative when you use them for a temperature blanket! You may need to adjust the number of squares or other motifs to match the time period you're covering.

  • Crochet Circles Throw Instead of alternating squares with and without circles, make all of the squares with circles. The circle can be the high and the square around it the low for each day, or vice versa.
  • Mitered Knit Blanket Each square can be a day, with the high and low for that day as the alternating colors.
  • Crochet Hexagons Blanket Hexagons can be made with a single temperature for the day.
  • Knit Patchwork Blanket Each square can be a day. Use the highs and lows for the alternating colors section, and the average for the day as the solid section.
  • Autumn Leaves Afghan Each leaf can be a month of the year, and you can choose the color of the leaf by the average temperature (or average high or average low) during that month.
  • Knit Sampler Afghan Each square can be a month, and you can even change which stitch pattern you use to show the weather or your activities for the month.
  • Twelve Star Throw Each star can be a month of the year, and the alternating colors on it can be the average high and the average low for that month.
  • Spring Quilt Knit Blanket Each hexagon can be a day.

Non-Blanket Patterns

A blanket might be bigger than you want to make, but you still want to follow the idea of a temperature blanket. These scarves and wall hangings are other options you can use!

For the scarves, you can do do the same thing as the more simple blankets: each row can be a temperature and you do as many rows as you need.

  • Knit Chain Garland Make a longer garland with one link per temperature — one for the daily high and one for the daily low, or a single one for the average — or mix it up with each link being one day, changing colors halfway through to represent the high and the low.
  • Pompom Wall Hanging Make a larger wall hanging or represent a shorter period of time. Each pompom can be a day, and you can follow the pattern to mix the colors of the daily high and low in the individual pompom.
  • Round in Circles Crochet Wall Hanging A circle a day is a great way to represent the average temperature each day in a month.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a temperature blanket work?

You assign a yarn color to each temperature range (like blue for freezing, yellow for warm, red for hot) and then crochet or knit one row per day using the color that matches that day's temperature. Over a full year, your blanket becomes a colorful visual record of the weather where you live. Every blanket is completely unique because no two places have the same weather… your temperature blanket from Minnesota will look very different from someone's in Florida.

What colors should I use for my temperature blanket?

That's entirely up to you! Most people choose a gradient… cool colors (blues, purples) for cold temperatures moving into warm colors (yellows, oranges, reds) for hot ones. Some crafters go rainbow order, some use their favorite color palette, some match their home decor. The only real requirement is that each color should clearly represent a temperature range. Pick colors you'll want to live with for a year… and make sure they're colors you can still buy more of if you run out mid-project.

Can I do a temperature blanket in crochet instead of knitting?

Absolutely! Temperature blankets are incredibly popular in both crafts. This collection includes patterns for crocheters and knitters. Any simple stitch pattern works beautifully… the key is consistency so every row looks the same regardless of which color you're working with. Single crochet, half double crochet, granny stripes, and ripple stitches are all popular choices for temperature blankets.

How much yarn do I need for a temperature blanket?

A lot… but spread across many colors! A typical worsted weight blanket at 60 inches wide uses roughly 4,000 to 6,000 total yards. You'll use more of the “common” temperature colors for your area and less of the extremes. Before you start, research your local climate to estimate which ranges will appear most often… that's where you'll need the most yarn. Buy in bulk for those colors and smaller amounts for the rare extreme temperatures.

What if I want to make something other than a blanket with temperature data?

Great question! This collection goes beyond blankets… there are temperature scarves, temperature afghans in different stitch patterns, and even some alternative “data blanket” formats where you track things other than temperature (like daily mood, rainfall, or how many steps you took). The concept is flexible… any project that uses one unit per day can become a “data project.” Get creative with what you track!

What’s The Best Temperature Blanket Stitch?

January 7, 2025 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

There are so many things to plan out when you're going to make a knit or crochet temperature blanket. You have to choose your temperature blanket colors and yarn. Moreover, you need to pick the time period and location for your data. You also need to choose a temperature blanket pattern or select the temperature blanket stitch that you want to use. Oftentimes, people choose to make a temperature blanket with single crochet, row after row showing the temperature for each day. Knitters might choose a simple garter stitch. However, don't be afraid to step outside of the box and come up with a different temperature blanket stitch for a more interesting design.

Itโ€™s like a visual diary that combines your love for crafting with the beauty of natureโ€™s changing seasons. Each row or block corresponds to a dayโ€™s high or low temperature, creating a one-of-a-kind design.

Temperature blankets have gained popularity among knitters and crocheters because theyโ€™re not only beautiful but also meaningful. Whether youโ€™re documenting a milestone year, like the year of a wedding or babyโ€™s birth, or simply tracking a random year for fun, this project offers a personal and artistic way to capture memories. Look at the temperature scarf Marly Bird made.

For those new to the idea, you can check out my post on how to to choose a crochet blanket size for foundational tips that apply to projects like this one.

Why Make a Temperature Blanket?

A temperature blanket is more than just a year-long craft project; itโ€™s a keepsake filled with memories. Here are a few reasons you might love making one:

  • Commemorate a special year: Whether itโ€™s the year you got married, a baby was born, or a major life event occurred, a temperature blanket becomes a cherished reminder of that time.
  • Challenge yourself creatively: Long-term projects can be intimidating, but theyโ€™re also incredibly rewarding. This is a fun way to build consistency and explore your craft daily or weekly.
  • Create something unique: No two temperature blankets are alike! Your blanket will tell the story of your local weather, with colors and patterns uniquely yours.

How to Plan Your Temperature Blanket

Planning your temperature blanket is just as fun as making it. Here's how to get started:

Choose a Color Palette

The colors in your temperature blanket will set the tone for the whole project. Think about:

  • Rainbow gradients: Classic and vibrant, these work beautifully for a full spectrum of temperatures.
  • Seasonal tones: Earthy hues like rust, gold, and deep blue can reflect the seasons in a more subtle way.
  • Custom color stories: Tailor your palette to reflect personal preferences or themes, such as beach tones or fiery sunsets.

I recommend browsing yarns like WeCrochet Brava, Herrschners Worsted 8 Heathers, Red Heart Super Saver or Lion Brand Vannaโ€™s Choice, which offer a variety of colors and are perfect for large projects. Need help with color selection? My guide to Fair Isle crochet colorwork basics can help!

Yarn Considerations for Temperature Blankets

Choosing the right yarn is essential for the success of your project. Here are some key factors to keep in mind:

Best Types of Yarn for Crochet Blankets and Knitting Blankets

For temperature blankets, durability is key. Look for easy-care yarns like acrylic or acrylic blends. Theyโ€™re machine washable, hold up well over time, and come in a variety of colors. Some top picks:

  • WeCrochet Brava
  • Herrschners Worsted 8 Heathers
  • Red Heart With Love
  • Lion Brand Pound of Love
  • Caron One Pound

Budget-Friendly Yarn Options

If youโ€™re crafting on a budget, look for yarns like Bernat Super Value or check local craft store sales. Buying in bulk online can also save you moneyโ€”check out my Amazon storefront for recommended yarns and tools.

How Much Yarn Do You Need for a Blanket?

Estimating yarn amounts can feel tricky, but hereโ€™s a good rule of thumb: Start with one skein of each color in your palette. You can always buy more if needed, but having extras of frequently-used colors (like mid-range temperatures) will save you from mid-project headaches.

Tools and Accessories for Your Temperature Blanket

Having the right tools can make your temperature blanket journey smoother and more enjoyable.

Crochet Hooks or Knitting Needles

Choose tools that match your yarnโ€™s weight. For worsted weight yarn, a size H (5mm) crochet hook or US 8 (5mm) knitting needles are great starting points. If that creates a fabric that is too stiff then go up in size.

Row Counters or Apps

Track your progress with a row counter or apps like Stitch Fiddle. Staying organized helps you avoid mistakes and ensures you can pick up where you left off.

Storage Solutions

Temperature blankets require a lot of yarn, so keeping your stash organized is a must! Use storage bins, clear bags, or yarn bowls to keep everything tidy. I recommend using ErinLane Bags Stash Finder bags as a great storage solution.

Determine Your Temperature Ranges

Once you have your colors, divide your local temperature range into segments. For example:

  • 0โ€“10ยฐF: White
  • 11โ€“20ยฐF: Light blue
  • 21โ€“30ยฐF: Medium blue
  • And so on!

Make sure to adjust ranges based on your areaโ€™s climate. You can even print a free tracker to stay organizedโ€”download a printable temperature blanket chart here.

Temperature Blanket Stitch Patterns

With so many options of stitches for your blanket you will want to consider a few things. If you are making a crochet temperature blanket, then you'll want to stick to shorter stitches in order to keep your blanket from getting too long and still recording all 365 days. Here are some suggestions of great stitches for your temperature blanket.

In Crochet:

You want to choose a simple, straightforward, short crochet stitch for your temperature blanket. However, this doesn't mean that you need to stick to single crochet (even though it's a perfectly good choice.) Here are some other great stitch options

  • half double crochet
  • linen stitch
  • lemon peel stitch
  • granite stitch/moss stitch
  • granny stitch

In Knitting:

If you're making a knit temperature blanket, you'll also choose a straightforward design. Some great basic knitting stitches that work well in rows include:

  • stockinette
  • 2×2 ribbing
  • seed stitch
  • double moss stitch

Motifs and Other Designs

If you prefer to work something other than straight lines you could use one of the following techniques.

  • corner to corner crochet
  • mini squares (knit or crochet, one square for each day)
  • chevron stitch pattern
  • knit lace pattern

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a temperature blanket?

A temperature blanket is a year-long project where you knit or crochet one row (or section) per day using a color that represents that day's temperature. You assign colors to temperature ranges… like light blue for 30-39ยฐF, green for 50-59ยฐF, red for 90ยฐF+… and as the year progresses, your blanket becomes this beautiful visual record of the weather. It's part craft project, part data visualization, and it's really cool to watch it grow over the months.

What stitch should I use for a temperature blanket?

Honestly, the best stitch is one you enjoy doing every single day for a year! That's the real test. Simple stitches like garter stitch, single crochet, or half double crochet are popular because they're easy to memorize and work up quickly. If you want more texture, try a shell stitch, granny stripe, or moss stitch. Just keep in mind that more complex stitches use more yarn per row… so factor that into your yarn budget. The stitch pattern should be something you can do on autopilot because consistency is the whole point.

How much yarn do I need for a temperature blanket?

This is the big question! It depends on your stitch pattern, yarn weight, blanket width, and how many temperature ranges you're using. A good estimate for a worsted weight blanket at about 60 inches wide is roughly 4,000 to 6,000 yards total… spread across all your colors. Some colors (like the mild temperature ranges where you live) will use way more yarn than extreme temps. Buy your most-used colors in bulk and your extreme colors in smaller amounts. And always buy a little extra of each… better safe than sorry!

Do I have to start a temperature blanket on January 1st?

Nope! You can start any day of the year. Some people start on their birthday, the first day of a season, or just whenever the inspiration strikes. You're recording a year of temperatures no matter when that year begins. Starting mid-year can actually be fun because you get the dramatic color shift from summer to winter (or vice versa) right in the middle of your blanket instead of at the ends.

What if I miss a day… can I catch up?

Of course! Life happens. Most temperature blanket makers have a weather app or website where they can look up past temperatures. Just check the high (or low, or average… whatever you decided to track) for the days you missed and batch those rows together when you have time. Some people even set aside one day a week to do all seven rows at once. There's no wrong way to do this… the blanket police are not coming for you. Just keep going!

Day Dream Blanket – Beginner Corner to Corner Crochet…

December 11, 2024 By Marly Bird 1 Comment

We're talking all things color here at Marly Bird right now. After all, it's been a year since we launched Camp Colorwork, and it's STILL the most comprehensive master course you'll find online for knit and crochet colorwork education. One thing (among MANY others) we cover is how to use grid color charts for both knitting and crocheting. An awesome and addictive technique we teach is C2C crochet. This reminded me of my Chic Sheep Day Dream Blanket. It's a free pattern for a Beginner Corner to Corner Crochet Blanket.

Give it a try now – let's play with colorful yarns, hooks, charts, and C2C!

Chic Sheep by Marly Birdโ„ข and Other Yarn Options

Having my own yarn line was one of my biggest dreams come true. I was more than elated when that dream became a reality. Of course, I wanted to make your crochet dreams come true too with this beautiful beginner corner-to-corner crochet blanket. What I loved most was that you could use all two dozen colors of Chic Sheep in this blanket if you wanted to!

Chic Sheep Yarn by Marly Bird. Model wearing crochet sweater and floppy hat in front of blue house. 4 colors of Chic Sheep Yarn light grey, red, turquoise, cerise.

Chic Sheep by Marly Birdโ„ข is 100% Merino Wool. This means that it is machine washable and dryer safe! Not only is it easy to maintain but it is an absolute dream to use in accessories and garments. Having this yearn snuggled up against your skin feels so good. Using this yarn to make a blanket was a no-brainer.

Unfortunately, Chic Sheep was discontinued. So, if you can't get your hands on any, then you might need an alternative. Some perfect yarn substitutions we recommend include:

  • Swish Worsted
  • Heatherly Worsted
  • Muse Hand Painted
  • Twill

Heatherly Worsted is an acrylic/wool blend. The rest are all superwash merino wool. Any of these are great options for the blanket below.

Note: You can use as many or as few colors as you'd like with this pattern. However, the more the better, in our opinion!

FREE Beginner Corner to Corner Crochet Blanket (C2C) Pattern

This free beginner corner-to-corner crochet blanket pattern is worked on the diagonal – hence the corner-to-corner technique. If you haven't worked on a corner-to-corner crochet blanket before, I have the crochet video tutorials to help you get started. And, of course, you can join Camp Colorwork for in-depth, lifelong learning along with many other crochet and knit color techniques.

Many of the corner-to-corner crochet patterns that you find will be done with double crochet. While this is a fine way of working the technique, I always prefer to work in a half double crochet. I feel that this tightens up the stitch and keeps a solid block. The video tutorials below will show you how to work the C2C technique using half double crochet stitches BUT the technique is EXACTLY the same if you are using double crochet stitches.

Warning! Using 24 different colors there will be MANY yarn ends to weave in; you may want to weave some in as you go. I promise this stunning crochet blanket as a reward will be worth it!
