โœจ Prism Make-Along with Marly Bird: A Mystery Colorwork Adventure for Knitters and Crocheters

April 23, 2025 By Marly Bird 2 Comments

๐ŸŽฏ Do you love colorwork but donโ€™t know where to start? Or maybe youโ€™ve tried and it felt… overwhelming?

Youโ€™re not the only one.

A lot of knitters and crocheters want to try colorwork but arenโ€™t sure where to start.

Itโ€™s hard to know which yarns to choose, how to carry floats, how to read chartsโ€”and letโ€™s be honest, some patterns leave you feeling more frustrated than inspired.

Thatโ€™s exactly why the Prism Make-Along with Marly Bird was born. You get the thrill of colorwork with the support of step-by-step tutorials, chart options, and a loving community ready to cheer you on.

Colorful graphic with a ball of yarn and knitting needle at the top. Text reads: "Marly Bird's PRISM MAKE-ALONG" in bold, colorful lettersโ€”perfect inspiration as you choose colors for colorwork, set against abstract shapes in the background. -Marly Bird

๐ŸŒŸ Why the Prism Make-Along Might Be Exactly What Youโ€™ve Been Waiting For

You want to make something colorful, unique, and wearableโ€”but letโ€™s be honest, stranded colorwork can feel intimidating.

What yarn do you use?

How do you carry floats?

What colors will actually work together?

And donโ€™t even get us started on those patterns that leave you more confused than inspired. You deserve better than guesswork and ghosted tutorials.

Thatโ€™s why I created the Prism Make-Alongโ€”a joyful, step-by-step experience for both knitters and crocheters who want to learn colorwork with clarity and confidence.

This isnโ€™t just another pattern drop. Itโ€™s a guided journey where youโ€™ll:

๐ŸŽ‰ Size inclusive garment designed by a professional designer (sized xs – 5xl)
๐Ÿงถ Work top-down on a swoncho (thatโ€™s a sweater + poncho!)
๐ŸŽจ Follow a colorwork mystery that unfolds piece by piece
๐Ÿ“… Get new pattern sections every Monday and Thursday in May
๐Ÿ™Œ Learn at your own pace, with full support in every stitch

Colorful graphic with yarn balls and geometric shapes. Text reads: "Spectrum Stitch Swoncho with Marly Bird" in bold, multicolored letters on a patterned background, perfect for a Prism Make-Along or mystery colorwork knitting crochet adventure. -Marly Bird

You choose your path:

  • ๐Ÿ’› Prism Path Swoncho (Knitting)
  • ๐Ÿ’œ Spectrum Stitch Swoncho (Crochet)

Whether you're comfortable with the basics or ready to level up, this make-along is here to guide you through something truly magicalโ€”from cast-on to final flourish.

๐Ÿ’ก Behind the Prism: Why This Make-Along Matters

The Prism Make-Along was born out of your requestsโ€”for color, creativity, and a challenge that feels fun, not frustrating.

A smiling woman with her hair styled in an updo, wearing glasses and a colorful knit swoncho. The words "harmony" and "Marly Bird knit swoncho" appear as text overlays. -Marly Bird
Harmony Swoncho–Inspiration behind this make-along

Over the years, so many of you have told me:

  • โ€œI want to try colorwork, but Iโ€™m afraid Iโ€™ll mess it up.โ€
  • โ€œI love the Harmony Swoncho but I don't know how to knit. Will you make a Crochet version?โ€
  • โ€œI want to make garments that look greatโ€”but I need help getting there.โ€

So I listened. I designed two bold, modern swonchosโ€”one for knitters using stranded colorwork technique, one for crocheters using split single crochet and stranded colorwork techniqueโ€”each packed with visual interest, easy construction, and step-by-step support.

This isnโ€™t a โ€œmysteryโ€ meant to leave you guessing and Googling. Itโ€™s structured, supportive, and made for real makers who want to finish something theyโ€™re proud of.

๐ŸŽ‰ Two Ways to Join the Prism Make-Along Fun ๐ŸŽ‰

I design all my make-alongs to be fun, affordable, and accessibleโ€”whether youโ€™re ready to go all-in or just want to test the waters. ๐Ÿงต Whatโ€™s the Difference Between Amigurumi and Crochet?

This one trips people up a lot! At its core, amigurumi is a style of crochet (or knitting) that focuses on making stuffed toysโ€”typically animals, dolls, and other cute characters. What makes it special is the tight stitches, often worked in spirals using single crochet, and a ton of shaping that gives life and personality to each creation.

So yes, amigurumi is crochet, but not all crochet is amigurumi.

๐Ÿ˜ What is the Easiest Animal to Crochet?

If youโ€™re looking for a fast win, simple shapes like balls, whales, or elephants (especially just the head like in this pattern!) are great for beginners. This easy crochet elephant pattern free on the blog is a perfect starting point for your amigurumi adventure!

๐Ÿงถ What Yarn is Best for Amigurumi?

The best yarn for amigurumi holds its shape well, shows stitch definition clearly, and doesnโ€™t get too fuzzy over time. Hereโ€™s a quick breakdown:

  • Cotton yarn โ€“ Great for crisp shapes and a clean look. Itโ€™s sturdy and doesnโ€™t stretch much, making it perfect for tight amigurumi stitches. Even Cotton and Acrylic blends are nice to work with.
    • Local Grown Cotton – Great for Baby Items
    • All Day Cotton – Bright Colors to Choose
    • Cotton Sprout – Affordable Choice
    • My Ami – Designed Specifically for Amigurumi
    • Comfy Worsted – Love This Yarn
  • Acrylic yarn โ€“ Affordable, easy to find, and comes in tons of colors. Choose a smooth worsted weight acrylic like WeCrochet Brava (used in this pattern!) for excellent results.
    • Worsted 8 – Great Price
    • Brava Tweed – Awesome Look for Stuffie Toys
    • Everyday Worsted Gradient – Unique Look for Amigurumi Toys
  • Avoid yarns that get fuzzy or shed, especially if your project will be loved by little hands or displayed long-term. But these Fleece/Blanket yarns are great for Amigurumi.
    • Skwishy – Affordable and FUN to Crochet
    • Blanket Yarn – Sparkle Anyone?
    • Blanket You Know and Love
    • Velvet – Crochet This Tight and You Will LOVE the Results!

๐Ÿชก What Hook Should I Use for Amigurumi?

Smaller hooks are best! You want your stitches to be tight so that the stuffing doesnโ€™t show through. If you're using worsted weight yarn, a size G/7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook (like in this elephant head) is a solid choice for that snug finish.

Black background with 2 single crochet hearts. Peach color on left worked in yarn over single crochet, lavender heart on right worked in yarn under single crochet. Test asking question: Do you crochet yarn over or yarn under? Marly Bird
Yarn over and yarn under single crochet hearts.

๐Ÿค” Yarn Over vs. Yarn Under in Amigurumi โ€“ Does It Matter?

Yes, it does! If youโ€™ve ever noticed that your crochet amigurumi elephant free pattern looks slightly different from someone elseโ€™sโ€”even when using the same yarn and hookโ€”it might come down to your stitch technique.

Most crocheters naturally use the yarn over (YO) method, where the yarn goes over the hook before pulling through. But in amigurumi, some crocheters use yarn under (YU) instead, where the yarn goes under the hook. This makes a tighter, more angular stitch and can help your shapes hold better.

๐Ÿงถ Curious about the difference and how it affects your finished piece? Learn more in this helpful post:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Crochet Yarn Over or Yarn Under โ€“ Whatโ€™s the Difference?

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Try both methods on a small swatch before committing to one. Whichever you choose, stay consistent throughout your project!

โŒ Beware of AI-Generated Amigurumi Patterns!

As tempting as it might be to grab a free printable elephant crochet pattern or download a crochet amigurumi elephant free pattern PDF from a random website or YouTube link, be careful! Many AI-generated or stolen patterns out there arenโ€™t written by real crocheters. They often include missing steps, incorrect stitch counts, or poorly translated instructions that lead to frustration and wasted time.

A chaotic pile of red and white triangular warning signs, each displaying the bold black word "SCAM" in the center, resembles a cleverly tangled mess of Big Twist Yarn. -Marly Bird

I just did a simple search on google for Elephant Amigurumi and look at the sponsored suggestions from Etsy. Two of the top choices are AI-Generated or a FAKE pattern that somebody is selling! Look below at the screenshot!

Google search results for "elephant amigurumi" reveal a variety of crochet elephant toys from Etsy. Two listings stand out with large "FAKE" labels in red, crossed out by a purple X, while others boast genuine designs and even an enticing Elephant Free Pattern option. -Marly Bird

๐Ÿ” Common Amigurumi FAQs

Do you crochet amigurumi inside out?
You canโ€”but most crocheters work with the right side facing out (the “pretty” side). Make sure your stitches look like tight little โ€œVโ€s from the outside.

Is amigurumi always single crochet?
Most amigurumi is worked in single crochet using increases and decreases for shaping. But youโ€™ll sometimes find creative stitches too!

Whether youโ€™re knitting or crocheting along, one of the most funโ€”and sometimes most overwhelmingโ€”parts of any colorwork project is to choose colors. But together we can choose colors for a colorwork swoncho.

๐Ÿงถ The Yarn for #Prism2025

Weโ€™re working with Swish Yarn from Knit Picksโ€”a soft, bouncy, superwash Merino wool thatโ€™s a dream for both knitters and crocheters. You can choose between:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Swish DK Yarn (lighter weight for a more delicate look) — Crochet
๐Ÿ‘‰ Swish Worsted Yarn (cozy, squishy, and great stitch definition) — Knitting

Both options are fantastic for colorwork and come in a stunning range of coordinated solids, which makes pairing shades so much easier.

Seven vibrant balls of yarn in shades like purple, lavender, pinks, and beige are neatly lined up at the top. Below, bold pink text proclaims "Choose Colors for Your Colorwork Project," setting the stage for the Tournament of Stitches 2025 on a crisp white background. -Marly Bird

๐ŸŽจ How to Choose Colors for a Colorwork Project

I've written an in depth post about choosing colors for stranded colorwork that you can read here. However, let's talk more about the Tournament of Stitches colorwork specifically. Your colors will shine when youโ€™ve got contrast, harmony, and a bit of playfulness. Here's how to create that magic:

1. Start with a Star Color

Pick a color you LOVE. This will be your “hero” or main color. Build the rest of your palette around it.

2. Look for High Contrast

Colorwork patterns need contrast to show up clearly. Use a light, medium, and dark color. Think:

  • Light background + dark motif
  • Dark background + bold accent
Swatch if you're unsureโ€”what looks good in the skein doesnโ€™t always pop in the stitches!

3. Use a Color Wheel for Balance

Want a modern, eye-catching combo? Try complementary colors (across from each other on the wheel) or analogous colors (next to each other) for a more subtle vibe.

4. Include a ‘Zinger' or a ‘Pop'

Marlyโ€™s tip? Add a fun or surprising pop! It doesnโ€™t have to be neonโ€”just something that gives your palette personality. A little goes a long way.

5. Get Inspired by Nature or Favorite Items

Look at photos, fabric, your favorite sweaterโ€ฆ nature is the best designer! Or check out the Harmony Swoncho for a great example of colorwork harmony.

      Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mum's the Word Chrysanthemum pattern?

Mum's the Word is a free knitted flower pattern by Marly Bird that creates a beautiful three-dimensional chrysanthemum bloom. The finished flower can be used as an applique on hats, bags, or sweaters, as a brooch or hair accessory, or as a standalone decorative element for home decor. It's a clever little project that captures the layered petal structure of a real chrysanthemum in knitted fabric… and it looks impressively realistic for how simple the technique actually is.

What skill level do I need to knit this flower?

It's approachable for advanced beginners and beyond. You'll work with knit and purl, some basic shaping, and the finishing involves gathering and shaping the flower petals. It's small and quick… not a major time commitment. If you've completed a few small projects and are comfortable with basic knitting, this is a great next skill-builder. The three-dimensional effect comes from the construction technique rather than complex stitches, which makes it very achievable.

What yarn is best for knitted flowers?

For defined petal structure, smooth yarn with good stitch definition works best… you want the individual stitches to show. Worsted or DK weight gives you clearly visible petals. For a softer, more natural flower look, a slightly fuzzy yarn or a silk blend adds a beautiful texture. Choose colors that match real chrysanthemums… burgundy, yellow, white, purple, orange… or go fantastical with bright pinks and blues. Leftover yarn from other projects is perfect for flowers since they use such small amounts.

How can I use the finished flower?

So many ways! Sew it onto a hat for an instant accessory upgrade. Attach a pin back to wear it as a brooch on a jacket or bag. Use it as a hair clip. Attach several to a wreath or garland. Sew it onto the strap of a bag. Glue it to a headband. Use a cluster of them as a bouquet or centerpiece. Knitted flowers are small, portable little gifts of beauty… and because they use almost no yarn, you can make a whole collection from your scraps.

Can I make other flower types with similar techniques?

Absolutely! Once you understand how knitted flowers work… the combination of short rows, gathering, and dimensional construction… you can adapt the technique to create roses, dahlias, sunflowers, and other blooms. Marly has other flower patterns on the blog as well. And across the broader knitting community, there are patterns for incredibly realistic flower varieties. Start with the chrysanthemum, see how the construction works, and then explore. Botanical knitting is its own wonderful rabbit hole!

One of my very first memories of crochet in my life is a blanket my grandmother made for my mother. It is a stunning floral motif crochet blanket, with large red blooms in the center of each square. My grandma put her heart into every block.

My mom gave me the blanket since she knows I love crochet and to this day, I treasure that blanket, not just because itโ€™s beautiful, but because it reminds me of the joy I had crocheting next to my grandma when she was alive.

A cozy bedroom features a large bed adorned with a crocheted blanket showcasing intricate flower motifs in red and green. Two windows with white curtains, a framed painting, a wooden dresser, and a digital alarm clock complete the tranquil space. -Marly Bird

And guess what? You can create your own forever-blooming floral motifs too! No watering, no sunburnt petals, no seasonal sadness when they wither away. Just gorgeous crochet flowers that stay vibrant year-round. ๐ŸŒฟ

๐ŸŒธ Why Crochet Flowers Instead of Planting Them?

I love fresh flowers, but letโ€™s be realโ€”crochet ones come with some serious perks:

      • Hail-proof. Spring storms? No problem. Your crochet garden stays flawless.
      • Eco-friendly & stash-busting. Use up leftover yarn instead of throwing it away.
      • Perfect gifts. Handmade flowers never die, making them the ultimate sentimental gift.

And if you do love real flowers, why not pair them together? Imagine gifting a pot of wildflowers with matching crochet flowers tucked inside! ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

      Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 3 free crochet floral motifs in this collection?

This collection features three different wildflower-inspired crochet motifs that can stand alone as appliques, be combined into bouquets, or used to embellish other projects. Check the pattern for the specific flower types (they're wildflower-inspired… think daisy-style, simple 5-petal flowers, and small floral accents). Each motif is worked as a standalone piece using basic crochet stitches… they're designed to be quick to make and beautiful to display as “flowers that last forever” unlike real wildflowers.

What can I do with these floral motifs?

The beauty of small floral motifs is their versatility! Use them as appliques on hats, bags, and cardigans. Create a flower bouquet by making several in different colors and wiring them to stems. Make a wreath or garland of crocheted wildflowers. Attach to a headband. Use as gift embellishments instead of bows. Create a framed floral arrangement. Make a flower crown for a special occasion. Attach to hair accessories. They're tiny but mighty pieces… individually charming and spectacular in groups. Make a big batch in spring colors and scatter them everywhere!

What yarn and colors work best for wildflower motifs?

Light DK or fingering weight in cotton or cotton blend gives the finest, most realistic flower look. For the wildflower aesthetic, think meadow colors… daisies in white and yellow, cornflowers in blue, poppies in red and orange, clover in pink and purple. Variegated yarn in floral color families creates beautiful multi-toned petals without yarn changes. For a more cottage garden look, saturated colors feel right. For a boho or bohemian aesthetic, slightly muted, earthy flower tones are beautiful. Stems and leaves in sage or forest green ground the flowers beautifully.

      Are these floral motifs beginner-friendly?

Yes! Small floral motifs are excellent beginner crochet projects because they're tiny, quick to finish, and use just a few rounds of basic stitches. A single flower can be completed in under 30 minutes once you know the pattern. The techniques typically involve a center ring, petals worked from the ring, and simple shaping. The size makes mistakes less costly… if something doesn't look right, you've only used a few yards of yarn and can try again. Making flowers is genuinely joyful… the transformation from a ball of yarn to a tiny, perfect flower in your hands is magic.

How do I make my crochet flowers look dimensional and natural?

A few tricks! Light blocking opens up the petals and helps them sit flat or curve naturally. For flowers with multiple layers (like roses), the way you attach the layers creates the dimensional effect. For simple flat flowers, lightly stiffening with spray starch or a tiny bit of diluted fabric glue can help petals hold a slight curve. Wire stems through the center of the flower hold it at a natural angle in an arrangement. And choosing yarn with a slight sheen (like silk or bamboo blend) adds a petal-like quality to the finished flower that matte yarn doesn't quite capture.
