July 12, 2025 By Cryssi Jeffries Leave a Comment

Is there anything more festive than slipping on a cozy handmade Christmas hat while you’re baking cookies, wrapping presents, or stitching away by the fireplace? I swear, the moment that fuzzy red hat goes on, the holiday spirit cranks up to eleven!

Whether you’re wearing a crochet Santa hat, a knit Christmas hat, or something extra playful like a Christmas tree beanie, it’s the ultimate holiday accessory. Bonus points if there’s a giant yarn pom-pom on top — because you know I can’t resist a pom-pom! 🎄🎁

A collage of festive knitted and crocheted Christmas hats, featuring striped, elf, and pom-pom designs created from crochet Christmas hat patterns, surrounds bold red "Christmas Hats" text. Pine branches and fairy lights add a holiday touch. -Marly Bird

🎅 Fun Fact:

The iconic red-and-white Santa hat we all adore was actually popularized by Coca-Cola ads in the 1930s, but it goes back even further! It evolved from the “nightcap” worn by Saint Nicholas in early European art — which means your handmade hat is part of a very cozy tradition.

So here’s the thing… that iconic red-and-white Santa hat we all love got a big boost from Coca-Cola ads way back in the 1930s! But honestly, its roots go even deeper, evolving from the nightcaps Saint Nicholas wore in older European art. So your handmade hat is part of a super cozy tradition!

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of Christmas pillows can I knit or crochet?

With 20+ patterns in this collection, the options are festive and fun! Pillows with Fair Isle or colorwork Christmas motifs (snowflakes, trees, reindeer, Nordic patterns). Solid texture pillows in holiday colors (chunky cable knit in cream or red is timeless). Applique pillows where a crochet snowflake or Christmas tree is added to a plain pillow cover. Simple striped pillows in Christmas colors. Giant chunky arm-knit floor pillows for a dramatic cozy statement. The range covers everything from quick weekend projects to more elaborate designs that showcase impressive technique.

What size pillow insert should I plan for?

Before starting your pillow cover, decide what insert you’ll use and work to those dimensions! Standard pillow sizes: 12×12 inches, 14×14, 16×16, 18×18, 20×20 for square pillows. Lumbar pillows are typically 12×20 or 14×20. Plan your cover to be 1 to 2 inches smaller than the insert for a nice full, taut fit… knit and crochet fabric stretches so a slightly smaller cover stuffed with a larger insert looks better than a cover that matches or exceeds the insert size. Purchase your insert first and then measure it before calculating your stitch counts.

Are Christmas pillow covers washable?

Machine washable is the smart choice for home decor you’ll store and reuse yearly! Acrylic and cotton pillow covers are easy to care for. Wool pillow covers should be hand washed or dry cleaned. Remove the pillow insert before washing the cover! Most covers use a zipper or button closure, or just fold-over construction on the back. Store washed, clean covers with the rest of your Christmas decor so they’re ready to go next December. A pillow cover that can be easily cleaned and reused for many years is far more practical than one that requires special care.

How do I add a closure to a crocheted or knitted pillow cover?

A few options! The easiest is an envelope back… work two rectangular back panels with a horizontal overlap in the center. No zipper or buttons needed, just overlap the two pieces and the pillow insert holds the back closed. For something more secure, add buttons and buttonholes along the opening. A zipper can be hand-sewn into the opening for the most polished look. For purely decorative pillows, the seams can be sewn or crocheted shut completely (no insert, just stuffed with fiberfill) which eliminates the closure challenge entirely.

Can I make Christmas pillows year-round and store them?

Yes! Many crafters make holiday home decor projects throughout the year when they have time and energy, then pull everything out in season. Crocheted and knitted pillow covers store flat and compact… stack them with your other Christmas storage. Making holiday items outside of the holiday crunch is much more relaxed and enjoyable than trying to crochet a Christmas pillow cover in the first two weeks of December. Year-round making = low-stress holidays. Start your Christmas pillow collection now and display them with pride every December!

For Rustic looks and durability, you can’t go wrong with worsted-weight wool blends like Lion Brand Wool-Ease or Cascade 220 Superwash or one of my favorites, Patons Classic Wool. They drape beautifully, have great stitch definition, block easily, and hold their shape year after year.

🛠 Tools Every Maker Swears By (That Make Big Projects Easier!)

Tree skirts can get… big. Like, “covers half your living room floor while you work on it” big. Here are a few tools that make the process smoother:

  • Blocking mats and pins – Essential for getting those points to lie flat and even. Especially helpful if you’re working lace or shaping.
  • Yarn bowls or center-pull dispensers – Keep those skeins from rolling across the floor mid-round.
  • Ergonomic hooks and needles – You’re working dozens (or hundreds!) of rounds. Your hands will thank you.
  • Stitch markers and row counters – Helpful for tracking increases or pattern repeats, especially when working in the round.
  • Project bags – Because let’s be honest, this might take you a few cozy couch sessions (or Hallmark movie marathons).

Many of these tools also make great gifts for the crafters in your life!

✨ Fun Fact:

Did you know Christmas tree skirts date all the way back to the 1870s? Originally, they were used to catch dripping candle wax from real candles on Christmas trees (yep — real fire and pine!). Thankfully, today we stick to safer sparkle, and use crocheted and knitted tree skirts to add cozy, crafty charm without the fire hazard. 😉

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should a crochet Christmas tree skirt be?

Standard tree skirts are typically 48 to 54 inches in diameter… that’s a big project but it’s what’s needed to actually cover the base of a full-sized tree and its stand. Smaller trees (tabletop or apartment-sized) might only need a 24 to 36 inch skirt. Mini trees can use a 12 to 18 inch diameter skirt that’s almost more like a pot cover. Before starting, measure around your tree base to the desired radius and plan accordingly. Many patterns come in multiple sizes or can be easily adjusted by working more or fewer rounds.

How long does it take to crochet a tree skirt?

A full-sized 48-inch tree skirt is a significant project… expect 15 to 40+ hours depending on stitch complexity, yarn weight, and your crocheting speed. Bulky yarn tree skirts work up fastest. Worsted weight takes longer but gives more design options. Fine weight or lace-style skirts are the most time-intensive but the most beautiful. Start well before December! Many crocheters begin tree skirts in September or October. A finished handmade tree skirt becomes an heirloom decoration used for decades… the time investment is absolutely worth it.

What yarn is best for a crochet Christmas tree skirt?

Durability and washability are key since tree skirts live in storage 11 months a year and get dragged out, handled, and put away. Machine washable acrylic in classic Christmas colors (red, green, white, cream, gold) is the most practical choice. Cotton is beautiful and durable. Wool adds luxurious warmth and drape but requires more careful storage and washing. Traditional red and white, cream and gold, or a natural off-white with green accents are all timeless. For a more modern aesthetic, deep burgundy and forest green or neutral cream with metallics are stunning alternatives.

Do I need to sew a backing onto a crochet tree skirt?

Not necessarily! A well-crocheted tree skirt can be used as-is. However, adding a fabric backing protects the yarn from the rough tree stand and makes the skirt look more polished when it flips over accidentally. A simple circle of felt or cotton fabric cut slightly smaller than the skirt and hand-stitched around the edges creates a beautiful lined finish. Some crafters also add a red or green velvet backing that coordinates with the crochet colors. The backing is optional but a nice finishing touch if you want a more heirloom-quality look.

How do I crochet a round tree skirt that lies flat?

The increase rate is everything! If you increase too slowly, the skirt cups upward. If you increase too fast, it ruffles. For a flat circle in double crochet, the classic formula is 6 stitches in the center ring, adding 6 more stitches distributed evenly each round. Blocking after finishing also helps significantly… lay the skirt flat, wet or steam block it, and pin it to a flat surface to dry. A blocked tree skirt lies beautifully under the tree in a way an unblocked one might not. Always block your finished skirt before putting it to use!

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a blanket pattern “Christmas” themed?

Either the colors, the motifs, or both! Classic Christmas blankets use red, green, and white in striking combinations. Holiday motifs… snowflakes, Christmas trees, stars, reindeer, Nordic patterns… clearly identify a blanket as Christmas-themed. Some use colorwork to create graphic holiday imagery. Others use simple holiday color combinations in beautiful texture-focused patterns that feel festive without a specific motif. The 10 patterns in this collection showcase this range from bold graphic holiday designs to more subtle festive pieces.

When should I start a Christmas blanket?

Summer! A Christmas throw takes significant time… 20-40+ hours depending on complexity and yarn weight. Starting in July gives you breathing room to enjoy the making process rather than rushing. September is the latest most people should start if they want to give a blanket as a Christmas gift. Many crafters who love making Christmas blankets work on them throughout the summer and early fall as a way of connecting with the holiday spirit well before December chaos arrives. The most beautiful Christmas gifts are made with unhurried care.

What yarn is best for a Christmas blanket?

Machine washable is essential for a blanket that will be pulled out of storage each December and used throughout the holiday season! Red Heart in classic Christmas colors is reliable and affordable. Caron or Lion Brand in holiday shades work beautifully. For a more luxurious feel, a soft washable wool blend elevates the finished piece significantly. The classic colors matter more for Christmas blankets than for neutral home goods… a true clear red and a rich forest green or dark navy creates the most identifiably Christmas aesthetic.

Can I make a Christmas blanket that’s usable year-round?

Yes with careful design choices! A Nordic geometric pattern in cream and forest green reads as classic Scandinavian style that’s beautiful any time of year. A rich red and cream cable blanket is lovely in any season. Snowflake motifs in pale blue and white feel wintry-general rather than specifically Christmas. If you want a beautiful blanket that celebrates the aesthetics of the season without being pack-it-away-in-January specific, lean toward timeless patterns and refined color choices over literal holiday imagery.

Are there both knit and crochet Christmas blanket patterns in this collection?

Yes! The collection includes options for both crafts. Whether you knit or crochet (or both!), there are Christmas blanket patterns suited to your craft. The post includes guidance on which patterns are knit versus crochet and what skill level each requires. Check each pattern individually for craft designation, yarn requirements, and finished dimensions so you can choose the Christmas blanket project that best fits your skills, timeline, and the recipient’s home.
