What Makes A Good Crochet Slipper?

When making slippers, there are a few things that you will want to consider. First, slippers are an item that needs to be durable. They will be on your feet so they’ll take a lot of wear and tear. Therefore, you must onsider the yarn that you are going to us to make your slipper. After all, you want to make sure that it is something that is substantial and durable.

Tip: Want to help increase the longevity of your slippers? Try adding leather pads to the bottom. Remember that this might make the slipper more slippery, so try to find something that isn’t too smooth. Chosen correctly, though, this can make your slippers even more slip-proof. Plus, they’ll last longer.

Another way to help with your slipper to have more traction is to add puff paint or hot glue to the bottom of the slipper. This will give you a little more grip when walking on surfaces such as wood or tile.

You can further increase the durability of your socks by adding some reinforcement thread. While you are working the stitch on the bottom of your slipper, add a strand of nylon thread that will help your stitches from stretching out.

Crochet Slipper Sizes:

Picking the size of your crochet slippers can be a little challenging. Most slippers you want to be on the snug side so that they don’t fall off while you are wearing them. Unlike with a sweater, you want snug or tight rather than too loose.

Important measurements when making slippers are:

  • your foot circumference
  • foot length

You will take these numbers and subtract an inch from each to get what your finished slipper measurements should be. Why would you go down an inch from your actual foot size? Because your crochet slipper will stretch. Consider what yarn you are using and how much stretch will your fabric have? It is always a great idea to make a swatch to see how it will feel.

Looking for a great reference chart for what your final slipper measurement should be? Check out the resources on Kate Atherley’s website. Although she talks about knitting, the same principals apply to crochet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best crochet stitch for slippers?

Single crochet and half double crochet create the densest, sturdiest fabric for slippers. They produce a tight weave that holds its shape and provides warmth. Avoid open or lacy stitches for slipper soles.

What yarn is best for crochet slippers?

Wool and wool blends are the top choice for crochet slippers because they provide warmth, natural grip, and durability. Avoid 100% cotton or slippery acrylic for soles as they can be slick on hard floors.

How do I make crochet slippers non-slip?

Apply puffy fabric paint dots to the soles in a grid pattern and let them dry completely. You can also sew leather or suede sole pads onto the bottom, or use hot glue dots as a quick fix.

Can a beginner crochet slippers?

Absolutely! Crochet slippers are one of the best beginner projects. They are small, work up fast, and teach basic shaping. Start with a simple single crochet slipper pattern worked in rows.

How long does it take to crochet a pair of slippers?

A basic pair of crochet slippers in worsted or bulky weight yarn can be finished in 4 to 8 hours. Bulky yarn and large hooks work up fastest. More detailed patterns may take 10 to 15 hours.

What hook size for crochet slippers?

Most crochet slipper patterns use an H/8 (5mm) to J/10 (6mm) hook for worsted weight yarn, or a K/10.5 to L/11 hook for bulky weight. A slightly tighter gauge than usual creates sturdier fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best stitch for crocheting slippers?

Single crochet and half double crochet are your best friends for slippers! They create a dense, sturdy fabric that holds its shape and provides cushion underfoot. Some patterns use double crochet for a softer, more flexible slipper… but for durability, tighter stitches win. If you want extra thickness, try working through the back loop only… it adds a nice ridge texture and makes the fabric even sturdier.

How do I keep my crochet slippers from being slippery on hard floors?

This is the number one question everyone asks! The easiest fix is puffy fabric paint… squeeze dots all over the soles, let them dry completely, and you’ve got instant traction. You can also buy stick-on rubber sole pads made for handmade slippers, or sew leather or suede patches on the bottoms. Some crafters even hot-glue pieces of shelf liner to the soles. Whatever you choose… it makes a huge difference and it’s totally worth the extra five minutes.

Can I crochet slippers for the whole family with one pattern?

Some patterns in this collection include sizes from child through adult, which is amazing for family matching sets! If a pattern only comes in one size, you can often resize by changing your hook size and yarn weight… go up for bigger feet, down for smaller ones. Just keep in mind that changing the hook also changes the fabric density, so swatch a small piece first to make sure it still feels sturdy enough for a slipper.

What yarn should I use for crochet slippers?

Wool is fantastic because it’s warm, naturally grippy, and you can felt it for extra durability. But acrylic works great too… especially if you want slippers that are machine washable (because let’s be real… slippers get dirty). Go with worsted or bulky weight for a cozy, substantial slipper. Avoid cotton for slippers… it doesn’t have any stretch or cushion and it wears out fast on the soles. Whatever you pick, make sure it feels good because your feet will be living in these!

How long does it take to crochet a pair of slippers?

Most slipper patterns work up pretty fast… we’re talking an evening or two for a basic pair. They’re one of those instant gratification projects that crafters love. Bulky yarn slippers are especially quick. More detailed patterns with colorwork or fancy stitch patterns might take a bit longer, but even those are usually a weekend project at most. They’re perfect for last-minute gifts… ask me how I know!
