What is Gradient Yarn and Why Use It?

Gradient yarns are spun or dyed to create smooth transitions from one color to another. They are a fantastic option for projects like shawls, scarves, and other wearables, where you want a seamless shift from one hue to the next.

When working with mini skeins of gradient yarn, you can blend colors in creative ways or mix and match to create unique pieces. The Stonington crochet shawl is made with mini skeins I purchased at a fiber festival.

Why Use Mini Skeins for Crochet Projects?

Mini skeins (or mini hanks) are smaller amounts of yarn, typically around 20-25 grams each. They’re popular because they allow crafters to explore a variety of colors without having to commit to a full skein. Here are some great reasons to use mini skeins:

  • Versatility: They work well for colorwork, stripes, and gradients, making them perfect for patterns like the Stonington Shawl.
  • Cost-Effective: You get a lot of variety without needing to buy large quantities of each color.
  • Creativity: Mini skeins encourage experimenting with color placement and combinations.

Why the Stonington Crochet Gradient Bias Shawl is Perfect for Gradient Sets

The Stonington Crochet Gradient Shawl was designed to highlight the beauty of gradient yarn. Its bias construction allows the colors to shift seamlessly from one end to the other, making it an ideal project for mini skeins. Whether you opt for a soft transition of pastels or a bold pop of contrasting shades, this shawl will let the yarn do all the talking.

What You’ll Love About This Pattern

  • Interesting Stitches: Keeps you engaged with a variety of fun stitches—no boredom here!
  • 🧶Exciting Color Changes: The gradient yarn makes every color shift a moment to look forward to!
  • 🌈Customizable: Easily adjust for more or fewer color transitions, so it works with any yarn set you have.
  • 🎨Works Up Fast: This pattern is designed to be a quick project, perfect for those looking for a beautiful finish in no time! ⏰

Tips for Working with Gradient Yarn Sets:

  • Start Light or Dark? Decide if you want the gradient to shift from light to dark or vice versa for your project.
  • Use Stitch Markers to track your color changes, ensuring smooth transitions.
  • Keep Tension Even to ensure that your gradient colors flow seamlessly throughout the piece.

How to Style Your Stonington Crochet Gradient Shawl 🧣✨

One of the best things about the Stonington Crochet Gradient Shawl is its versatility! Whether you’re dressing up or keeping it casual, this shawl has you covered.

  • Wrap It Around: For a classic look, drape the shawl around your shoulders and let the gradient colors cascade for an effortless, elegant vibe. Perfect for a cool evening out!
  • Belt It: Add a trendy touch by wrapping the shawl around your shoulders and securing it with a belt at your waist. This gives you a cozy, chic look while keeping everything in place.
  • Wear It Like a Scarf: Fold the shawl in half lengthwise and wrap it around your neck. The bias construction gives it a unique shape that adds depth and texture to any outfit.
  • Go Asymmetrical: For a bold statement, drape one end over your shoulder and let the other hang longer on one side. This allows the gradient effect to really shine!

Whether you’re pairing it with jeans and a tee or layering it over a little black dress, this shawl is the perfect accessory to elevate any look. 🌟

Why You’ll Adore the One Ball Shawl Crochet Pattern

Why commit to a massive project when you can achieve spectacular results with just one ball? The Late Nite Shawl is perfect for those nights when you just want to relax and crochet something quick yet beautiful. It’s your go-to project for a last-minute gift or a personal treat.

I even filmed myself doing just that! It was 10pm at night when I decided to grab my ball of Scarfie yarn, a hook, and sat down to watch The Avengers movie. I had the shawl done before the movie was over! So this really is a great Netflix and Chill project.

A person with glasses and curly hair is smiling and holding up a light gray and white crocheted scarf with tassels on both ends. They are wearing a gray cardigan over a black top. The background shows a bedroom with a bed and a geometric-patterned wall decor. -Marly Bird

What You Need to Start Your One Ball Crochet Shawl

Here’s what you’ll need to kick off this fun project:

  • Yarn: Grab a ball of Lion Brand Scarfie yarn (or any similar category 5 bulky yarn). The fluffier, the better!
  • Hook: A 8 mm (L) crochet hook should do the trick.
  • Scissors and Tapestry needle for those finishing touches, optional Tassel Maker. <– This one is my favorite and I even made a video for it. You can watch it here.

Whether it’s from your stash or a new treasure, any bulky yarn will bring this pattern to life!

Great Yarn Alternatives to Scarfie

While Scarfie yarn is awesome for this project, here are some fabulous alternatives to try:

  • Roll With It Melange
  • Lion Brand Ferris Wheel
  • Caron Colorama Halo
  • Snuggle Puff

Experiment with these yarns to personalize your shawl exactly how you want it!

Your Video Guide to the V Stitch One Ball Crochet Shawl Pattern

This part of our blog will guide you through the V stitch technique used in the Late Nite Shawl. I’ll break down every step to ensure you have a smooth, enjoyable crafting experience. You’ll see how simple stitches can create something truly magical.

Video will be added on Sept. 17, 2024!

Customizing Your Late Nite One Skein Crochet Shawl

Making this shawl your own is part of the fun! Here’s how you can add a personal twist:

  • Color Play: Choose a yarn that speaks to your style or the season.
  • Adjust the Size: More rows or more initial chains can change the size to your liking.
  • Texture and Details: Think about adding tassels, beads, or even a fringe for that extra flair.

LATE NITE SHAWL PATTERN

Tassels

Create 3 tassels as follows:

For each Tassel, cut 21 lengths of yarn, approximately 10” [25.5 cm] each. You can quickly do this by wrapping yarn around a flat piece of cardboard 5” [12.5 cm] long 21 times, then cutting yarn along one edge of the cardboard.

Use one of the cut strands to tie together the remaining 20 at the center.
Fold Tassel in half, and wrap it tightly with new yarn several times approximately ½“ [1 cm] below the halfway point. Cut yarn and secure the wrap by tying a square knot. Weave the ends of the wrap into the Tassel and trim if needed.

Use the centerpoint strand to attach Tassel to the finished Shawlette.

DIY Plaid Crochet Scarf: Free Pattern & Video Tutorial

July 1, 2024 By Marly Bird 2 Comments

Hey there, crochet lovers! Do you adore the timeless charm of plaid? If so, you’re going to love my new pattern: the DIY Plaid Crochet Scarf. This stylish scarf combines the classic gingham pattern with the cozy feel of crochet, making it a must-have for any season.

Whether you’re a plaid enthusiast or just looking for a fun new crochet plaid project, this pattern has something for everyone. Keep reading to get the free written pattern, watch the full video tutorial, and learn more about creating beautiful gingham crochet pieces, like these!

Collage of a person showcasing a colorful plaid-look crocheted scarf. The main image has the text "Plaid-look with a Crochet Hook". Smiling and wearing glasses, they pose with the scarf in various angles. Marly Bird logo is at the bottom center. Includes Free Pattern and Video Tutorial for DIY Plaid Crochet Scarf.
 -Marly Bird

What is Gingham Plaid?

When I think of gingham plaid, I immediately picture cozy picnics and charming country kitchens. Gingham evokes a sense of nostalgia and comfort with its simple, checked pattern. Unlike tartan, which has complex lines and multiple colors, gingham is all about the clean and classic dual-color scheme.

Traditionally, the beauty of gingham lies in its simplicity and symmetry. Each square of color contrasts perfectly with its neighbors, creating a crisp and classic look. This isn’t the complex colorwork you might see in other patterns—gingham’s charm is in its straightforward, predictable squares. I find its unassuming beauty truly captivating.

Patterns in crochet gingham stitch - Marly Bird

In crochet, we can bring the gingham plaid look to life through basic chains, single crochet or double crochet stitches, a variety of stitch patterns like the griddle stitch, the v stitch, or even a shell stitch , or we can use the quintessential granny square motifs joined together to get such a look.

By alternating blocks of color, you can replicate the classic gingham check in your crochet projects.

Sometimes it isn’t even about the stitch used but the yarn that creates a plaid look as seen in planned pooling. The consistent lengths of color in a yarn coupled with some strategic stitch and color placement can generate some amazing plaid looks with planned pooling.

NOTES

  • Colorwork is tapestry crochet.  Meaning when changing colors within a row, carry contrasting color on top of the stitches and work stitches over the yarn until you need it.
  • Shawl does not have an edging.  Take extra care with the beginnings and ends of your rows, as they will be visible.  If you rather hide your row ends, you can add a round of single crochet to the edge after the shawl is finished.
