Is Lace Yarn Too Hard for Beginner Crocheters?
If this is your first time using lace yarn, I recommend playing around with classic crochet stitches to become comfortable holding the yarn, and more importantly, keeping the height of the stitches you make consistent.
The yarn can be a little tricky at first. Take your time to get used to the smaller hook, and the thinner yarn, and maintain consistent tension. You’ll be a-ok.
Now, specifically speaking about the Bluebonnet Shawl, this pattern is perfect for the beginner, intermediate and advanced crocheter. You work the body of the shawl in single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. So there aren’t any surprises or new stitches to learn when you’re familiarizing yourself with the yarn.
But, the edging does use some different stitches but by the time you get to that point in the pattern you will be MORE THAN COMFORTABLE with the hook and yarn 🙂
Just a quick note: all instructions are written in US terms.
It's A Wrap Yarn
It's a Wrap Yarn: 50% Cotton 50% Acrylic Blend Yarn.
Red Heart It's a Wrap Yarn, Thriller
It's a Wrap is a blend of cotton and acrylic that knits up into a beautiful, lightweight fabric. The unique 3-color combination in each ball provides enough yardage to make a complete shawl, giving you the color block look all in one ball. It's a Wrap is soft and drapey, making it the perfect choice for a stylish summer shawl. Crochet or Knit up one today and enjoy the comfort and fun of It's a Wrap!
A Yarn Perfect for an Easy Summer Crochet Shawl
Most summer shawl patterns call for lightweight yarn. It’s hard to find anything other than traditional sock yarns, which are usually a wool nylon blend. Not ideal for a crocheted shawl to wrap around your shoulders in a room with the air conditioning on full blast (I know you know what I am talking about here!).
This is where the It’s a Wrap yarn is wonderful substitute for those patterns.
Red Heart’s, It’s a Wrap, is the perfect yarn for this or any summer shawl crochet pattern! This lightweight yarn is classified as a 1-super fine yarn. It’s made up of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic, making it an ideal choice for warm-weather projects like…oh, I don’t know…crochet summer shawls? *wink.
For those of you who haven’t been able to get your hands on It’s a Wrap take a look at the review I did when the yarn first came out. It is available on the Yarnspirations website.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bluebonnet Shawl really a beginner pattern?
Honestly…, it’s perfect for beginners and advanced crafters alike! The body uses simple stitches like single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet, so there are no new stitches to learn. The edging does have a few different stitches, but by then you’ll be super comfy with the yarn and hook!
Can I use yarn other than “It’s a Wrap” for this shawl?
So here’s the thing… the “It’s a Wrap” yarn is really perfect because it’s a lightweight blend of cotton and acrylic and it has this lovely color block effect. While you could probably use another lightweight yarn, you might not get the same beautiful color changes or drape. It’s designed to work wonderfully with this specific yarn!
Is lace weight yarn difficult for beginners to crochet with?
Yes!, lace weight yarn can be a bit tricky at first. I suggest practicing some classic stitches to get a feel for holding it and keeping your stitch height consistent. But don’t worry… the Bluebonnet Shawl pattern itself is beginner-friendly because the main body uses basic stitches you likely already know!
Can I get a tutorial for the first few rows of the Bluebonnet Shawl?
Oh, I understand how those first few rows can be confusing sometimes… especially if you don’t have the charts. While there isn’t a specific tutorial for just those rows here, the ad-free PDF version available on Ravelry does include charts which can really help clarify the stitch pattern. I always recommend checking that out if you’re having trouble!
How many rows does the Bluebonnet Shawl pattern actually have?
That’s a great question… The pattern is written for 70 rows for the main body of the shawl. If you’re finding you’re not reaching the color changes or finishing the shawl by row 70, double-check your stitch count. Sometimes a few missed stitches can make a big difference in how much yarn you use and how long the pattern feels!

Hi Marly,
I am currently working on the Bluebonnet Shawl but I am a bit confused, I am on Row 34 right now and nowhere near being finished with even the first color. The way it looks right now I will use way less than one cake, I am not even sure if I will make to the first color change. What am I doing wrong? I counted my stitches and they are right according to the pattern. Is the shawl really only 70 rows?
Thanks so much for your help and all your beautiful patterns
Its beautiful
Thanks so much! I hope that you get to make one for yourself, and share a photo with me on Ravelry! 🙂
I would love to make the blue bonnet shawl, but having a difficult time understanding the first 4 rows. Going on the side is confusing me. Could you make a tutorial for that. I got the pdf for free in ravelry a while ago and it doesn’t have the charts with it.Thanks so much
