Elegant Lace Crochet Fingerless Gloves Pattern

June 27, 2022 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

Crochet can be many different things. When you think of crochet style, you might think retro and hippie or cozy and chic. Unfortunately, most people don't automatically think of crochet as elegant. However, it can be an elegant addition to your wardrobe. This elegant lace crochet fingerless gloves pattern is a great example. They're vintage-inspired, elbow-length, and should make you feel special as soon as you put them on. Whether you wear them for a night on the town or as part of a costume, they'll provide that added touch that takes your style to the next level.

Easy, Elegant Crochet Accessories

The great thing about knowing how to knit or crochet is that you can easily whip yourself up one-of-a-kind, unique accessories and clothing. And you don't have to know a ton of complicated techniques to make elegant accessories.

For example, fingerless gloves are essentially long rectangles. Since they don't have fingers, you don't have to know about shaping thumbs and fingers like you would with full-on mittens. So, you can make something sophisticated using basic crochet skills. The right yarn, stitches, and fit make it all perfect. Impress others and impress yourself.

These gloves are designed to be not quite elbow length. They're long, which makes them really chic. You could make them even longer – at or above the elbow – if you wanted to create even more of a statement when wearing them.

Lace Crochet Fingerless Gloves: Choosing the Right Yarn

You want to choose the right yarn when you make something elegant like these lace crochet fingerless gloves. You want something a little bit special. I originally designed these to use Fino from Alpaca With a Twist, which was an alpaca silk blend lace weight yarn. Unfortunately, that yarn has since been discontinued. However, here are some good alternatives to check out:

  • Aloft Super Kid Mohair. This is a lace weight yarn that's a blend of super soft mohair and silk. This makes it somewhat similar to the yarn I originally chose for the project, although a bit “furrier” because of the mohair.
  • Gloss Lace. This lace weight yarn is a merino wool and silk blend. This is even closer to my original fiber content for the project. It comes in luscious rich colors.
  • Luminance Lace. This is a 100% mulberry silk yarn. It's so soft to the touch. It's enjoyable to craft with and feels super elegant to wear. It also comes in handpainted colors if you want something truly special.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really make elegant crochet accessories with basic skills?

Yes! Honestly, fingerless gloves are basically just long rectangles, so you don’t need to worry about tricky shaping for fingers. If you’ve got the basic crochet stitches down, you can totally make something sophisticated with the right yarn and stitch choices.

What yarn did you originally use for these gloves, and what if it's discontinued?

So here's the thing… I originally designed these with Fino from Alpaca With a Twist, which was this lovely alpaca silk blend lace weight yarn. It has been discontinued, boo! But don't worry, I've found some wonderful alternatives for you to try that give a similar elegant feel.

What are some good yarn alternatives for these elegant gloves?

Great question! You can totally use Aloft Super Kid Mohair, which is a lace weight blend of mohair and silk. Gloss Lace is another fantastic option, a merino wool and silk blend that comes in beautiful colors. And if you want pure luxury, Luminance Lace, a 100% mulberry silk yarn, is just divine!

How long are these gloves supposed to be?

They're designed to be a little shy of elbow-length, making them super chic. But honestly, you could totally make them longer… even all the way up to or above the elbow if you want to make an even bigger fashion statement!

Where can I get the pattern for these gloves?

You can find the pattern linked on Ravelry! You'll need to click through to Interweave to purchase the pattern individually, or you might even get a discount if you sign up for their membership.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the most popular type of crochet bag to make?

Market bags and totes are by far the most popular! They're practical, eco-friendly, work up quickly in a mesh or open stitch pattern, and look gorgeous. Crochet market bags in cotton yarn are strong enough to carry a week's worth of groceries. After that, it's crossbody bags, pouches, and purses. With 126 patterns in this collection, there's genuinely something for every taste and skill level… from simple drawstring pouches to structured tote bags to boho fringe bags.

What yarn is best for crochet bags?

It depends on the bag! For market bags and totes that will carry weight, cotton is ideal… it's strong, doesn't stretch much, and is machine washable. Nylon and cotton-nylon blends are even sturdier. For decorative bags or clutches, you have more flexibility to use different fibers including wool, jute, or even yarn with metallic elements for a special occasion bag. Avoid anything too stretchy (like 100% acrylic without nylon) for bags that need to hold their shape under weight.

Do I need to line my crochet bag?

For open-stitch or mesh bags (market bags, produce bags), no… the open structure is the point. But for structured bags like totes or purses where you don't want items falling through the stitches or the bag losing its shape, lining makes a huge difference. A simple fabric lining (even hand-stitched) adds structure, protects the crocheted fabric, and makes the inside look tidy. Lining also prevents smaller items from poking through open stitches. It's an extra step but worth it for bags you'll use constantly.

Are crochet bag patterns good for beginners?

Many of them are! Simple tote bags and market bags are often just rectangles crocheted flat and seamed, or tubes worked in the round… basic construction for basic stitches. They're fantastic beginner projects because they're functional, you can see progress quickly, and the occasional tension variation doesn't matter the way it would in a fitted garment. Look for patterns specifically labeled beginner or easy, or ones that describe a simple rectangular construction.

How do I make the handles of my crochet bag sturdy enough?

A few options! For crocheted handles, work them in single crochet (the densest stitch) with several rows side by side for thickness and strength. Reinforce by working a second layer of single crochet over the top. For very heavy bags, consider using a purchased fabric webbing or leather handle and attaching it with sturdy stitching. You can also fold your crocheted handle and seam the layers together so the handle is thicker and more supportive. Test the handle by loading the bag with weight before calling it finished!

Long Crochet Lace Prayer Shawl Pattern

June 25, 2022 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

I've been going through some of my old crochet patterns, finding the ones you might not know about but shouldn't overlook. And I've got a great one for you today. It's the Shelly stole. This is a bulky weight lace crochet shawl, which is a bit different than what you'll find out there. It's also a prayer shawl, although you can make it without the prayer if you're so inclined. This long crochet lace prayer shawl pattern is designed to look and feel great on all body types.

A Long Crochet Shawl For Bigger Bodies

One of the reasons I love to crochet and knit my own designs is because I can make them to fit my body. I'm a tall, bigger gal, and just like everyone else, it's nice to wear clothes that flatter me. I found that many crochet stoles, shawls, and wraps were shorter than I needed to look right on me. They created a stumpy, short, frumpy look. So, I started designing longer crochet wraps. Problem solved. This long crochet lace prayer shawl pattern is designed to a length of 95″. Wrap it all around you and cozy up! Of course, you can always adapt to shorter patterns if you desire.

Bulky But Lacy Crochet Shawl

Another thing that sets this long crochet lace prayer shawl pattern apart from other crochet stoles and wraps is its lacy design, but it's made with bulky weight yarn. Usually, when people think of lace designs, they naturally think of lace weight or sock weight yarn for the project. However, you can create a beautiful openwork design with lots of great drape and still use bulky weight yarn.

Since the yarn is thicker, the wrap works up more quickly than using a lightweight yarn. But because I've kept it very lacy, it's not an overly heavy wrap that's uncomfortable to wear. It's not a blanket scarf by any means. It's long and thick, but it's not overwhelming.

Yarn and Crochet Hook

I designed this crochet pattern using Lion Brand Homespun Yarn with a size N/P crochet hook. Billow cotton yarn would also be a really great choice for this crochet pattern. So would Chroma Twist Bulky. Buy the yarn that makes your heart sing while you craft!

Prayer Shawls, Stoles, and Wraps

I originally designed this as a crochet prayer stole for my sister. This simply means that I held prayer and intention in mind for her while I crafted it. This infuses the project with your thoughts and prayers. It can be a great comfort to you while you craft and to the person you gift with the project when you've completed it. Of course, you can turn any shawl into a prayer shawl; likewise, any prayer shawl can be just an accessory if you aren't inclined to pray while you craft. It's up to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this prayer shawl pattern special, Marly?

So here's the thing… this pattern is designed to be longer than typical shawls, measuring 95 inches! It's made with bulky weight yarn but still has a beautiful lacy design, so it works up quicker without being too heavy. It's perfect for all body types!

Can I really make a lace pattern with bulky yarn?

Honestly… yes! It might sound unusual, but you can totally create a gorgeous openwork design with great drape using bulky yarn. It makes the project work up faster, and you still get that lovely lacy look without it being too dense.

What yarn and hook did you use for this pattern?

Yes! I designed this with Lion Brand Homespun Yarn and an N/P crochet hook. But really, any yarn that makes your heart sing will work… Billow cotton yarn or Chroma Twist Bulky would also be fantastic choices!

What's the deal with “prayer shawls”?

Well, I originally designed this as a crochet prayer stole for my sister, holding her in my thoughts and intentions as I made it. It's about infusing the project with your good wishes… but honestly, you can just make it as a beautiful accessory if that's more your style!

A Crochet Wrap Pattern You Don’t Want To Miss

June 24, 2022 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

I have a crochet wrap pattern for you today! You might have seen it before if you're a devoted Marly Bird fan. However, it's a really old pattern, so it's okay if you're unfamiliar. That's why I'm pulling it out again today. The Alpaca Clouds Wrap is the first pattern I ever put up for sale when I decided to start selling my patterns in 2008. It's the crochet pattern that makes knitters want to learn to crochet. So, in case you aren't familiar with it, I just wanted to bring your attention to it today.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. I receive a percentage of sales made from those links.

Alpaca Clouds crochet wrap pattern - Marly Bird

A Crochet Wrap In The Right Size

One of the things that I most liked about this crochet wrap pattern when I first designed it is that it's just the perfect size. It's large enough to offer warmth to people of different body sizes. In fact, unlike with most crochet accessories patterns, I've designed this in two sizes: average and plus size. (To make them, you use 4-5 hanks and 7 hanks of yarn, respectively.) So, you have options!

And yet, it isn't a blanket scarf. It's not going to swallow you up. It's lightweight, but it has full coverage. So, if you're looking for a rectangular crochet shawl that might be just the right size, I recommend checking out this oldie-but-goodie.

Cozy Alpaca Yarn

I designed this crochet wrap pattern for use with Berroco Ultra Alpaca yarn. It's a great worsted weight yarn that's a blend of alpaca and wool. Alpaca is a soft lightweight yarn that works really well for wraps. If you like the touch of it on your skin, then you'll like this wrap.

Other Yarn Options

Here are some alternatives to the yarn above that you might want to try when working with this pattern:

  • City Tweed DK. This is also an alpaca-wool blend. However, instead of a 50/50 blend, it combines 55% merino wool with 25% super fine alpaca fiber. The rest is Donegal Tweed, giving you a beautiful tweed coloring that makes for a unique wrap. Note that this yarn is a slightly lighter yarn weight than what's called for in the original pattern; luckily, wraps are versatile in terms of gauge (and you can always make it wider or longer if you want to!)
  • Alpaca Cloud DK. This is also a DK weight yarn. In this case, though, it's 100% baby alpaca fiber. If you want a wrap that is soft, soft, soft, then try yarn like this.
  • Wonderfluff. Do you want a bulkier yarn instead of a little finer? Try Wonderfluff. It's 70% baby alpaca, just 7% merino wool, and the rest is nylon for some stretch. It's another great option.
  • Patons Alpaca Blend. This is another bulky yarn option. This is only 8% alpaca, and the rest is wool and acrylic. If you want the softness of natural fiber but it makes you a little bit itchy, then a blend like this can be a great happy medium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a new pattern, Marly?

Honestly… no, this is actually an older pattern that I first released back in 2008! It was the very first pattern I ever put up for sale. I just wanted to bring it back to your attention because it's such a great design.

What makes the Alpaca Clouds Wrap so special?

So here's the thing… it's the perfect size! It's big enough to give you warmth but it won't overwhelm you. I designed it in two sizes too… average and plus size. So you really can get just the right fit!

What yarn did you use for this wrap?

Yes! I designed this wrap specifically with Berroco Ultra Alpaca yarn in mind. It's a wonderful worsted weight blend of alpaca and wool that feels so lovely and soft against your skin.

Can I use a different yarn?

Oh, absolutely! While I love Berroco Ultra Alpaca, I've included a few other yarn options in the post that would work beautifully. Think City Tweed DK, Alpaca Cloud DK, Wonderfluff, or Patons Alpaca Blend… there are some great choices!

Where can I get the pattern?

So glad you asked! You can grab the pattern over on Ravelry… it's a pattern that makes knitters want to learn to crochet, so you know it's good!

Throw On The Go: Hexi-Quilt Crochet Blanket Pattern

June 23, 2022 By Marly Bird Leave a Comment

Yarnspirations recently did a roundup of their best “throw on the go” blanket patterns. These are blankets that you can knit or crochet in small pieces. Obviously, these are great for summer because you don't want the heat of a huge blanket growing on your lap. They have tons of great designs to choose from, of course. Today, though, we wanted to draw your attention to a unique one: The Red Heart Hexi-Quilt Crochet Blanket.

Throw on the go crochet blanket pattern

Why Choose Throw on the Go In Summer

The Throw On The Go route is perfect for summer. If you're looking for a summer-long project to keep you busy, a blanket is always a good choice. Or a series of blankets, depending on how fast you knit or crochet.

And yet, as aforementioned, most people don't like to crochet blankets in the summer because it gets so hot. We love having all that yarn grow into a bundle on our laps in the winter. In the summer, it's just stifling. So, instead, we choose motif-based throws. We can quickly and easily make those motifs without getting warm.

Additionally, many of us travel more in the summer. Whether getting on a plane or just waiting to pick kids up from swim practice, you want easy projects to take along. The motifs that make up a Throw on the Go are just that. Make a motif while you wait. Work a few on a plane or during a road trip.

FLAT MARLY

Reminder: Take Flat Marly on Your Trips This Summer!

Red Heart Hexi-Quilt Crochet Blanket

There are so many knit and crochet blankets in that motif-based blanket roundup. However, we wanted to draw your attention to the Red Heart Hexi-Quilt Crochet Blanket. It's a great option for crocheters.

Cute Hexagon Motifs

Knit and crochet hexagons were trending a few years ago. Then they seemed to drop out of style. However, they're so fun to crochet. You get to make something that's different from your typical old granny square. It's still small, easy, and fun to make. And yet, it's slightly different from the usual shapes you often work with.

Cute Finished Blanket Shape

There are plenty of ways to combine hexagons to create a traditional rectangular or square blanket. However, you don't have to make all of your blankets square! It's okay to go on a non-traditional route when you crochet a blanket. This one ends up as a big hexagon itself. It's a unique design and one that really catches the eye. It's perfect for your own decor or gifting.

A Colorful Blanket Without Lots of Color Changes

Each crochet hexagon in this blanket consists of a single color. Therefore, you don't have to change colors in each motif round. You often don't want to deal with frequent color changes when you're on the go, so this is perfect. However, you'll make motifs in various colors, so you'll still have a colorful quilt-inspired blanket at the end. Best of both worlds. You can bring Color A with you, crochet all of the hexagons you want in that color, and then move on to the next color.

Because you use many different colors in the project, though, this is a great stashbuster!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this blanket pattern good for summer?

So here's the thing… this pattern is part of Yarnspirations' “throw on the go” collection, which means it's made in small pieces! That makes it perfect for summer since you won't have a huge, hot blanket growing on your lap while you're trying to stitch. Plus, it's super portable for travel.

What makes the Hexi-Quilt Crochet Blanket unique?

Honestly… it's the shape! Instead of a typical square or rectangle, this blanket ends up being one big hexagon. It's a really eye-catching design that's a bit different from the usual granny squares you see, and it's great for using up yarn scraps!

Do I have to change colors a lot for this blanket?

Yes! Each hexagon motif is worked in a single color. This means you can crochet all the hexagons you want in one color before switching to the next. It makes for a super colorful blanket without all the fuss of constant color changes in each round.

Is this blanket pattern difficult to make?

This pattern is listed as Advanced Beginner. The hexagons themselves are pretty simple and fun to make, offering a nice break from standard shapes. You'll just need to be comfortable with crochet basics to put it all together!

Can I really make this blanket in small pieces to take with me?

Absolutely! That's the whole idea behind the “throw on the go” concept. You can easily make individual hexagon motifs while you're waiting for appointments, on a plane, or during road trips. It's a perfect portable project!

Where Do You Stand On These 6 Crochet Trends?

June 22, 2022 By Marly Bird 1 Comment

Every spring and summer, fashion blogs start talking about crochet trends. Of course, these don't necessarily reflect what's happening in the world of craft, where actual people crochet actual items. Instead, they reflect what's showing up on the runways, on celebrities, and in the stores.

crochet fashion trends

There's a correlation, though, because crocheters and designers ultimately start making those items if they see a customer demand. And since crochet fashion is trending on TikTok right now, the demand is bigger than usual. So, we're curious what you think about some of the crochet trends the big fashion blogs are discussing this summer.

Bodiless Crochet Sweaters

knit and crochet bodiless sweaters

We recently did a blog post about the new trend of bodiless crochet sweaters. (There are knit ones, as well, of course.) We knew this would be one of the most controversial crochet trends. Indeed, when we posted about it on Instagram, asking for your opinions, you all had a lot to say! Some people outright hate this trend and can't see why anyone would even bother. Others think the shirts work great as a top layer, an alternative to a shrug or shawl. So, what do you think? Where do you land on this trend?

Crochet Trends: Bucket Hats

crochet bucket hat patterns

We recently rounded up some of our favorite patterns for crochet bucket hats. As we noted, they're super popular this summer. Whenever a fashion blog or magazine mentions crochet trends, they highlight this. As we also noted, these are a regularly recurring trend – we saw them in the 1960s and the 1990s, and they're back again. They've got a unique sensibility that seems to come around strong once every generation or so. Let us know in the comments if you're on board with this trend or ready for it to go away again.

The Crochet Swimsuits Trend

crochet swimsuit patterns

Here's another one that you'll see many fashion magazines mention every single summer. This isn't so much a trend anymore as just a seasonal expectation. If it's summer, fashion blogs will have swimsuits. And it's where crochet shows up the most in the fashion world. It's kind of funny because if you take an informal survey of all the people you know who crochet, most will say that they've never crocheted a swimsuit or rarely do. And yet, it's considered a high fashion trend each summer. What are your thoughts?

Crochet Tops

crochet summer tops patterns

We were thrilled to see Marie Claire name crochet tops among the year's most wearable summer fashion trends. Crochet tops are actually functional, fun to make, and come in a variety of styles that flatter different bodies … and yet, they almost never show up on predictions for fashion trends. 2022 is the year! Although not specifically mentioned by Marie Claire, we've noticed that crochet crop tops and crochet vests are trending this year.

Crochet Dresses

dress patterns

Marie Claire also highlighted crochet dresses as trending this year. They tend to go in and out of fashion on the runways and celebrities. We see them most often during Coachella/music festival season. When a celebrity wears one to a big event, they trend for a while again. What do you think? Are crochet dresses trending? Should they be? Have you made one recently?

Crochet Trends: Bags

beach bag patterns

Finally, Marie Claire mentioned that crochet bags are trending this summer. We love this one. Crochet purses, market bags, beach bags, totes, clutches, and bags in general are great accessories for all occasions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about bodiless crochet sweaters?

So here's the thing about bodiless sweaters… people have LOTS of feelings about them! Some folks really dislike the trend and can't understand it at all. Others see them as a fun alternative to a shrug or shawl, perfect for a little extra something. What do you think?

Are crochet bucket hats still in?

Honestly, bucket hats seem to pop up every few decades, and they're back in a big way this summer! They've got this cool, unique vibe that really comes around strong about once a generation. Are you on board with this trend, or ready for it to take a break?

Do people actually crochet swimsuits?

Yes! It's funny because every summer fashion magazines are all about crochet swimsuits, but if you ask around, most crocheters haven't made one, or only rarely. It's a high-fashion trend, for sure, but I'm curious what you think about it!

What's the deal with crochet dresses?

So, crochet dresses definitely come and go in the fashion world, especially around music festival season or when a celeb rocks one. Marie Claire even highlighted them as trending this year! Have you made one lately, or do you think they should be a trend right now?

Are crochet bags still a thing?

We absolutely love this trend! Crochet bags of all kinds – totes, market bags, clutches, you name it – are fantastic accessories for pretty much any occasion. They're definitely a great way to add a handmade touch to your style!
