It’s A Wrap One Ball Patterns
It’s a Wrap is a beautiful yarn from Red Heart and Yarnspirations. There are currently four different types of It’s a Wrap yarn each with their own unique qualities. Because the yarn is a thinner yarn there is quite a substantial amount of yarn that comes in each cake. Here is a collection of projects that you might enjoy making with JUST ONE ball of the It’s a Wrap family of yarns. Featuring many of my favorite designers, here is my round up of It’s A Wrap one ball patterns.

About It’s A Wrap
The It’s A Wrap family is made up of four different yarns.

When It’s a Wrap first came out cake yarns were making it BIG in the yarn world. Red Heart introduced this new yarn not to jump on the band wagon, but rather to fill a void in the market. So what is the difference between all four versions of the yarn?
It’s A Wrap:
It’s A Wrap was the first to the market and made the look of color blocking easier for the consumer.
It’s a Wrap is a weight 1-super fine yarn and has 1,100 yds per cake. There are 7 available colors.
I would not call this sock yarn because most people associate sock yarn with some wool content. It’s a Wrap is made up of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic.
It’s A Wrap Rainbow:
The Rainbow version of this yarn took our color choices to the next level. With the original It’s A Wrap the colors were very broken, stopping abruptly between each color. With the Rainbow version you are having four strands held together that change over time giving amazing color results.
Because there are four strands held together the weight of this yarn did move up to the #2 (sport) category. Each ball has 623 yards and comes in 8 beautiful colors. These balls are made up of 55% acrylic and 45% cotton.
It’s A Wrap Sprinkles:
Like the Rainbow version, sprinkles has a more gradual fade between colors. The biggest addition to the Sprinkles yarn is that there are additional sprinkles of color throughout your ball. This give another great dimension to the yarn.
Because there are four strands held together the weight of this yarn did move up to the #2 (sport) category. Each ball has 623 yards and comes in 8 beautiful colors. These balls are made up of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic.
It’s A Wrap Hues:
It’s a Wrap Hues is the newest of the It’s A Wrap family. Create unique designs with contrasting color movement. You will be amazed at the color possibilities with this yarn. Although it is not classified as a planned pooling yarn the color stories that you can tell with this yarn are amazing.
Color range includes jewel tone combinations and neutrals that pop against lively colors.
This yarn also has four strands held together making it a weight #2 (sport) yarn. Each ball has 623 yards and comes in 6 beautiful colors. These balls are made up of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Red Heart “It’s A Wrap” yarn?
It’s A Wrap is Red Heart’s specialty gradient yarn… a fingering or DK weight yarn that transitions through multiple colors in a single cake or ball, creating gorgeous ombre and rainbow effects automatically. It’s a self-striping yarn with long color sections that blend smoothly rather than changing abruptly. The “wrap” in the name refers both to wraps and shawls (popular projects for the yarn) and to how the color literally wraps through the skein. It’s popular among crafters who love color gradients without the hassle of managing multiple yarn sources.
What projects work best with It’s A Wrap yarn?
Shawls and wraps are the quintessential choice… the name says it all! Long linear projects where the yarn has room to run through its full color sequence show the gradient most beautifully. Scarves. Lightweight cowls. Small bags. Baby items. The color-changing magic works best when stitches run consistently in one direction across the length of the project. For hats and shorter circular projects, the color repeat may not complete a full gradient, but the short colorwork sections can still be beautiful in a different way.
How many yards are in a ball of It’s A Wrap?
It’s A Wrap typically comes in generous cakes with substantial yardage… check the specific colorway label for the exact amount, but most cakes have enough for a full shawl or wrap project. The “one ball” pattern collections specifically for this yarn are designed to use the full yardage of one cake efficiently. Having exactly the right yardage in one unit (no guessing about how many skeins to buy or color lot matching) is one of the yarn’s practical appeals. What you see in the cake is what you get in the finished project.
Can I substitute other gradient or self-striping yarns for It’s A Wrap patterns?
Yes! Any similar-weight self-striping or gradient yarn with comparable yardage can work. Caron Cakes and its variants are similar in concept. Indie-dyed gradient skeins in similar weight and yardage. Color-changing yarn from other brands. The main thing to match is the weight category and the total yardage… the pattern is designed around a specific amount of yarn. Substituting a gradient with very short color sections will give you different (possibly more random) color effects than the long ombre sections of It’s A Wrap, but that can be beautiful too.
Is this yarn good for beginners?
Yes! The automatic color changes remove one of the complexity factors from beginner projects… you don’t need to manage multiple yarn sources or plan color placement. Just start crocheting or knitting and let the yarn create its own color story. The DK or fingering weight is manageable for most skill levels. Simple stitch patterns are recommended so the yarn can be the star. For a beginner who loves color but finds colorwork intimidating, self-striping and gradient yarns like It’s A Wrap are a perfect introduction to multi-colored projects without the technical complexity.
