Uptown Chic Christmas Stocking Free Knitting Pattern

This free colorwork stocking pattern uses worsted-weight yarn held double, so it’s quick to knit. Knitting with the yarn held double helps make the fabric thicker, so you can stuff them even more!

Love Light Gleams Christmas Stocking Free Knitting Pattern

Love Light Gleams Christmas stocking by Marly Bird

The Love Light Gleams pattern was a free Christmas in July make-along this summer! My friend Briana K did a crochet stocking and I did this knit stocking for our free make-along. All the clues are still on the site, so you can still follow along.

Frequently Asked Questions

What knitting skills do I need to make a Christmas stocking?

Most stocking patterns require working in the round (circular needles or double-pointed needles), basic decreases (k2tog, ssk), and picking up stitches for the heel. Some patterns also include a turned heel (like sock knitting). If you’ve knitted a hat in the round, you have the foundational skills for a basic stocking. More decorative stockings with Fair Isle colorwork or cables require those additional skills but the construction stays the same. Start simple if it’s your first one!

How long does it take to knit a Christmas stocking?

A basic stocking in worsted weight takes most knitters a weekend… maybe 6 to 10 hours of actual stitching. More elaborate patterns with colorwork or cables can take 2 to 3 times longer. If you’re making matching stockings for a whole family, start well before December! September or October is not too early. Nothing is sadder than a half-finished stocking on Christmas morning… except maybe a half-finished stocking that got “gifted” anyway. Start early!

What yarn is best for a knit Christmas stocking?

Worsted weight wool or a wool blend is traditional and gives you a sturdy, heirloom-quality stocking that holds its shape when filled with presents. Acrylic works great too and is more budget-friendly, especially when making multiple stockings. Classic red with white and green accents is the iconic combination… but there are no rules! Modern stockings in neutral linen tones, metallics, or Nordic-inspired colorways are all gorgeous. Just choose something durable since stockings get used year after year.

Can I add personalization to a knit Christmas stocking?

Absolutely! Knit in a name using colorwork (there are great alphabet charts for this), or use duplicate stitch to add letters after the stocking is complete. You can also embroider a name or add a purchased name tag. Simple colorwork initials are a beautiful personal touch that makes each family member’s stocking unique. Duplicate stitch is the easiest approach… it sits on top of finished stockinette and is very forgiving for beginners to personalization.

Are personalized knit stockings good heirloom gifts?

They’re one of the most treasured handmade gifts! A knit Christmas stocking becomes a family heirloom that gets pulled out every year, hung with love, and associated with the warmth of the holiday season. Babies especially benefit from a handmade stocking because they’ll grow up with it… using it literally their whole childhood and then passing it on. A stocking knit by a grandmother, aunt, or family friend carries emotional weight that no store-bought stocking can match. It’s worth every stitch.
