What’s New Buffalo Wool Co?

February 6, 2017 By admin 28 Comments

What’s New Buffalo Wool Co?

What’s New Buffalo Wool Co? was the big question of the day for our sponsors of the Yarn Thing
Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird-Buffalo Wool Copodcast with Marly Bird, and Ron Miskin was here to share with us, calling in from an event in Harrisburg, PA. Yes, while on the road!

The Original Buffalo Wool Company was chartered in 1821 by the Hudson Bay Co. in Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird-Buffalo Wool CoRed River Manitoba, headed by Lady Selkirk, the wife of the then governor.
The plan was to harvest bison fiber and make ladies hosiery They were founded and funded with £5000,and after spending almost 4/5th of that investment on rum, proceeded to go bankrupt fairly quickly.  Fast forward 190 years, The BWC was revived both in name and spirit by Theresa & Ron Miskin.  Ron an ex-restaurateur and Theresa, a public housing councilor.  Ron and “T” have spent the last 10 years traveling around the globe as “bison ambassadors” showing off the beauty and benefits of bison and bison fiber.Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird-Buffalo Wool Co

Crochet Cables and Lace Shell Stitch Pattern

February 3, 2017 By admin Leave a Comment

Marly Bird wearing grey and white cowl made with the crochet cables and lace shell stitch pattern. Yarn: Red Heart Soft Essentials Stripes.

You’ll find this stitch in the Free Crochet One Skein Soft Essentials Cowl. The Crochet Cables and Lace Shell Stitch Pattern is both beautiful and easy to memorize.

The cowl pattern is written in the round, but some have requested that I share instructions for working flat too. I know what it’s like to fall in love with a stitch pattern and want to use it for something else. So, your wish is my command!

Just like the Soft Essentials Cowl pattern (see image), the stitch pattern uses the post stitches. This creates texture next to the delicate lace shell stitch. It’s a great stitch for many projects! I love to use it with the new yarn on the market exclusive to Michaels, Red Heart Soft Essentials Stripes. This yarn is part of the Soft Yarn family but is now in BULKY weight!

Crochet One Skein Soft Essentials Cowl

February 3, 2017 By admin 2 Comments

Free Pattern Friday with Marly BirdThis week’s Free Pattern Friday is the Free Crochet One Skein Soft Essentials Cowl. This pattern uses the post stitches to create its texture and next to the delicate lace shell stitch. This is a great project to learn a new stitch and use a new yarn on the market exclusive to Michaels, Red Heart Soft Essentials Stripes. And it’s one of my favorite one ball projects.

For many of us it is the time of the year when we need to get out our cold weather accessories. It is always a treat to be able to have something new to add to our collection. This cowl is made with one skein of Red Heart Soft Essentials Stripes. This yarn is part of the Soft Yarn family but now in BULKY weight!

The stitch pattern I used for the cowl only has a 14 stitch multiple and two rows making it easily memorizable. It is a fun stitch pattern using post stitches to make crochet cables along with a lace shell stitch. Not sure you know what those stitches are? No worries, I did a video to show you how to do it!

The Knitter’s Journal by Jane Klein

February 1, 2017 By admin 2 Comments

The Knitter’s Journal by Jane Klein

The Knitter’s Journal by Jane Klein is a handy resource that we learned about on the Yarn Thing podcast with Marly Bird.

Jane Klein was an elementary school teacher for many years and then a psychotherapist.  After retirement, she got an idea for an on line internet knitting kit company located in NYC. They were just at the Vogue Knitting Expo showing their kits, the book and some accessories as well, the favorite wwas the ‘Grab and Go’ knit which sold out. Another item that was very popular were the animal scarves.
Finally the essential knitting journal that can be customized to meet your personal needs. For the novice, tables of yarn estimates, understanding yarn labels, properties of yarn and recommended books. Knitters of all levels will benefit from the needle inventory, swatch and needle gauge. But what makes this book special is that we have unique features such as 6 erasable swatch pockets to keep track of your current projects and pages that allow you to keep samples of your yarn stash. The spiral binding with elastic page holder add the perfect finishing touches.
We can be found at www.janesknittingkits.com and Facebook.
