Mosaic Crochet

Mosaic crochet is a great introduction to colorwork. Although it may appear to be an intensive process, really these beautiful designs are worked with using only ONE color per row!

Colorwork can be a scary word for some. Managing the yarn, weaving in the ends, it all seems so daunting. Yes, making projects with colorwork may take a little more time, or a little more concentration, but look at the end results! They are totally worth it!

Diamond Mosaic Crochet Square

The Diamond Mosaic Crochet Square was made as block #15 of the 2019 Moogly CAL (side note, omg…the squares this year are so awesome!) For my square, I wanted to have the crocheter make a block that was simple yet could still stand up to the wonderful squares already designed for the blanket.

When working a mosaic pattern it is important to remember to pick two contrasting colors. If the colors are too close together you won’t be able to see the detail of the pattern as much.

PRO TIP: Think of your colors in black and white. Will you be able to tell that you have two different colors or are they too close together to know. If you won’t know there are two colors when they are black and white, they aren’t the best option for mosaic work.

Make the Square

Jumping head first into a new technique might be a struggle for some. Making a 12″ square makes it easier.

Grab this FREE crochet pattern and try out the mosaic crochet technique and see if you love it. Once you get the feel for it with this simple pattern you can then step up your game with more complex patterns.

My friend Nadia, from YARNutopia, had a baby boy that I had to make something for. I designed a very special blanket just for him called the Oliver and Olivia Blanket.

After falling in love with that blanket I created the Modern Mosaic Blocks Throw for a larger size. Check them out!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mosaic crochet really hard… I’m a beginner!

Honestly… mosaic crochet can look super intimidating with all those cool patterns, but it’s actually way easier than it looks! You only use one color per row, so it’s not as fiddly as other colorwork techniques. Give this Diamond Mosaic Crochet Square a try for FREE and see how fun it is!

How do I make sure my mosaic crochet colors show up well?

So here’s the thing… you really need to pick two colors that are super different from each other. A good trick is to imagine them in black and white… if you can’t tell them apart then, they probably aren’t the best choice for mosaic crochet. Contrasting colors make that beautiful diamond pattern pop!

I saw this pattern mentioned as part of a CAL… what is that?

Yes! This Diamond Mosaic Crochet Square was actually block #15 for the 2019 Moogly CAL. It’s awesome because it’s a simple square that still looks super impressive and fits right in with other amazing squares designed for blankets.

Can I use this square for other projects besides a blanket?

Absolutely! The page mentions this square was designed for a blanket, but once you get the hang of the mosaic technique with this simple 12″ square, you can totally use it in other projects. It’s a great stepping stone to more complex mosaic patterns!

Where can I find more mosaic crochet patterns from you, Marly?

Oh, I’m so glad you asked! Once you fall in love with this one, you should definitely check out my Oliver and Olivia Blanket and the Modern Mosaic Blocks Throw. They’re both gorgeous and use that fun mosaic technique too!
