Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Over the years I have put together tutorials, had great guests on the Yarn Thing Podcast, and written some quick patterns. Here is a round up of those things that would be great as Mother’s Day Gift Ideas.

Most of the items on my list will only take you a day to finish once you have the supplies. Head out tonight, gather what you need, and you will be the favorite child when you hand one of these gifts to your mom.

Diamond Art

Diamond Art Review-Mother's Day Gift Ideas

We talked about using your stitching for meditation. We are mostly aware that it is good practice for us to take a moment to rest but we don’t always follow our own advice.

After using my Diamond Art Kit I found it to be very relaxing. It is a mix of paint by number and cross stitch. You do need to follow a pattern and the boxes are little, for those with weak eyesight you will need some type of magnifier.

Grab your favorite image to make for our mom and frame it or give the kit to mom to give her something relaxing to do.

Scrap Yarn Bracelet

Mother's Day Gift Idea-Scrap Yarn Bracelet

I started by looking at some things on Pinterest and what I had in my ever growing stash and put together an idea. If you are like me I hate throwing away perfectly good scraps of yarn in fear that I will find the perfect project to use it up or my kids could use it for a project (ironically my son just asked me for some yarn to play with to make a rope-case and point).

Noticing that I had a small stash of light weight yarn I thought that I could do something with it. Since I liked how the project turned out I thought that I could share it with all of you so that you could make one for yourself. Hope you enjoy this scrap yarn bracelet.

Punch Needle Project

Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird and Bookhou-Learn out Punch Needles

I am sure you have heard of punch needle art by now but if not today is your lucky day! Arounna, of Bookhou, was our special guest on the Yarn Thing Podcast. She came on to talk about punch needles and her creativebug class on the technique. This is a great alternative way to use your yarn stash to create beautiful wall hangings, pillows and more.

Bargello Project

Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird and Hello Bargello-Mother's Day Gift ideas

What is Bargello?  Bargello is a forgotten needlecraft from the 60’s and 70’s. Just one simple stitch repeated in trippy geometric patterns and bold colors.

Our friend Brett Bara from Brooklyn Craft Company was introduced to the craft and fell in love. Since she couldn’t find super modern versions she started a new company on her own. Check out Hello Bargello and make a quick project for mom, and yourself!

Loome was founded in Brooklyn, NY in 2015. Their motto is One Tool, Infinite Possibilities. This speaks to the the versatility of their tools and what you can make.

The Loome is an all-in-one wooden fiber craft tool that makes pom poms, tassels, small weaves, cords, friendship bracelets. There are 4 models but they all do the same thing.

Grab the book and you can make a variety of bracelets and necklaces with pom poms and tassels.

The hygge crochet mini candy basket is a quick gift you can work up for a teacher, co-worker, or a friend. This basket is a mini version of the larger Hygge Color Block Baskets free pattern from redheart.com.

DIY Shawl Pin

DIY Shawl Pin Workshop-Mother's day gift ideas

Finishing a knit or crochet shawl isn’t complete when you have woven in your last end. To complete a shawl you need the perfect shawl pin. Rather than always searching for the right thing, why not make your own. Not only does it make the piece more special but you can get what you want in shape, color and size when you make it yourself.

The team at Beadalon invited Katelyn and I to their office to work on a live demo. Watch below or use the photo tutorial to start creating your own shawl pins for your next shawl project or gift.

Crocheting with Beads

Bead Crochet Necklace-Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Adding beads to your crochet projects is a great way to branch out. You can purchase a kit that has all of the materials together or you can grab a book to learn.

Making a crochet tube with beads is a little harder than just doing a single crochet chain necklace. Make a long change and knot it together or try adding it to some change for a few different looks.
