Turkey Trot Mystery Make Along || 2020

With the success of the last years Turkey Trot 2019, Tournament of Stitches and the Game Day events, and knowing that 2020 hasn’t really went the way any of us planned, I wanted to add little fun to our Thanksgiving weekend.

Learn more about the event, grab your supplies and get ready to trot along with me in this mystery knit along and crochet along. #MarlyBirdTurkeyTrot2020

What is the Turkey Trot with Marly Bird?

Turkey Trot Mystery Make Along with Marly Bird 2020 is a FREE and super fun online event held over the US Thanksgiving weekend for BOTH knitters and crocheters.

A make along is when a group of knitters and crochets get together to work on the same project at the same time. In this case we will have one knit pattern and one crochet pattern. Both pieces are the same object but different style. Whether you choose to make one of the patterns or both we would love you to join us for the fun!

When is the 2020 Turkey Trot

Taking place over the weekend of Thanksgiving 2020 we will release one part of the pattern (the clue) over 6 days. Yes, six days of fun. This year I extended the time of the event so that we can all relax and really enjoy working on our project and *hopefully* have enough time to finish by the start of December.

Schedule of clues

As I mentioned, I extended the timeframe of this event to give us all some more time to work on the project. Each day I will post a link to each clue right here on this blog post (at the bottom). I’ve made the size of the clues about the same size as various traditional Thanksgiving dishes (these are some of my favorites at my house).

  • Wednesday, Nov. 25th @ 7pm, ET — this is a small clue…like deviled eggs and stuffed mushrooms
  • Thursday, Nov. 26th @ 7pm ET — this is a medium clue…like a soup & salad
  • Friday, Nov. 27 @ 9am ET — this is a large clue…like the green bean casserole and bread
  • Saturday, Nov. 28 @ 9am ET — this is a large clue…like the cheesy vegetable casserole and cranberries
  • Sunday, Nov. 29 @ 9am ET — this is a large clue…like the turkey and stuffing
  • Monday, Nov. 30 @ 9am ET — this is a medium clue…like pumpkin or pecan pie with whip cream
  • ETA: KNITTERS HAVE BEEN GIVEN THREE EXTRA DAYS FOR CLUES.

❣️The LINK to each clue will be added below! Keep scrolling to get links❣️.

Feel free to work on each section as it is released or wait until Monday to work the whole project. You have until Monday, Dec. 7th DECEMBER 14, 2020 to enter for a chance to win a prize! (More about that later)

Here is a link to the event page on FB should you want to have reminders of the event over there.

What Are We Making

IT IS A MYSTERY! I can’t tell you!!! Okay, so I know what we are making as I designed it but I can’t tell you any more than it is a wearable accessory…my take on a VERY POPULAR wearable. This event is a MYSTERY make along so you won’t know what the final project will look like until you make all of the clues.

I can tell you there are two sizes. S-XL and 2XL-5XL, it is meant to be oversized, and there will be ways to customize for those who are petite or tall. *And if you are one of those people who just can’t handle mysteries…honestly, I’m sure you can guess what it is ????

ETA: So many people are asking so I want to share this about sizing. If you are uncertain what size to choose, think of it as if you normally would wear a “one size fits most” size at Target, then you are the smaller size. If you always wish the”one size fits most” was a bit bigger, then you are the larger size.

There is a change to the instructions this year. Are you ready? I will be doing videos for each section this year to help you along. The videos will be linked in the clue instructions and will be available on the Marly Bird YouTube Channel.

Materials Needed for the Turkey Trot Mystery Make Along 2020

We all know the trouble with getting yarn during 2020. I think, UGH, is the appropriate sound. Stock on the shelves is low and quantities online are unpredictable. For that reason, I designed a piece that can be made with worsted weight yarn. I want you to be able to grab yarn from your stash or select yarn at the store that is actually available.

Below the materials list, you will see a list of yarns that I think would work well with this Turkey Trot 2020 pattern. I overestimated the yarn amounts so you do not run out of yarn…better to have too much than not enough! Also, I wrote the pattern to be in one color.

Turkey Trot 2020 Crochet:

  • Hook: Size I (5.5 mm) Crochet Hook–Or any size to obtain gauge with the yarn you are using
  • Yarn: worsted weight yarn (written for one color)
    • The amounts are an estimated amount (because I don’t know what yarn YOU are using) so to make sure you have enough for the project, have at least the yardage listed for the size you are making
      • Size S-XL: 1500 yds
      • Size 2XL-5XL: 2200 yds
  • Notions:
    • Removable stitch markers
    • Tapestry needle
    • Good pair of scissors

Turkey Trot 2020 Knitting:

  • Needles: 2 sets of Size 9 (5.5 mm) 24″ & One pair of size 9 (5.5 mm) 40″ or 60″ circular knitting needles –Or any size to obtain gauge
    • The longer circular needles are to accommodate the number of stitches that will be on the needles by day 3.
  • Notions:
    • Stitch markers
    • Cable needle
    • Tapestry needle
    • Good pair of scissors

Both — Yarn Options for Turkey Trot 2020:

As promised, here is a list of yarns that would work and you might have in your stash. *note: I would not pick a variegated yarn

That is a great way to share with others what you are working on for the weekend and get them over to the site as well. *Be sure to add a link to this post in the description of the picture: https://marlybird.com/turkey-trot-mystery-make-along-2020/

Marly, just a quick question on the worsted yarn, what number would that correspond to on the yarn ball band? Would it be #4, or should you not go by that? Thanks in advance. Beate
