Tips for Making Plus Size Crochet Garments
Before getting started with your first project here are a few tips to help you have success.
- Measure yourself-Have a friend help you, if you are comfortable, to get your exact measurements. Don’t pick a size based on what you typically wear, go by your measurements and what you see in the schematic. It will save you a TON of frustration later.
- Swatch-This will be key to your success. Since plus size garments mean that there is more time required and more yarn you want to make sure that what you selected will work with the pattern. If you aren’t using the exact yarn as in the pattern it is even more important to swatch. Check that the drape is right for your project and how you want it to feel when you are finished.
- Model a sweater you love-Although it is important to measure yourself it is also great to know the measurements of your favorite sweater. What does this tell you? It will help you pick how much ease you like. If you measure a 46″ bust but your favorite sweater is a 50″ bust that means that you prefer 4″ of positive ease. This will help you in picking the size that you want to make. Pick the size that will give you a 50″ finished bust and don’t worry what size it is supposed to fit.

Do I really need to swatch?
Yes! Swatching is going to be key to your success, especially with larger garments. Since you’ll be using more time and yarn, you want to make sure your yarn choice works with the pattern and has the right drape. It’s even more important if you’re not using the exact yarn from the pattern.
How much ease should I aim for in my garment?
Great question! It’s super helpful to measure your favorite sweater that fits you just right. If your favorite sweater’s bust measurement is larger than your actual bust measurement, that difference is the ease you like! So, if you measure 46″ but your favorite sweater is 50″, you prefer about 4″ of positive ease.
