Crocheting With Wire

Crocheting with wire is another way to take the craft that you love and change it up. When you work with wire you will need a thin gauge of wire, typically about 28 gauge. You can work simple crochet stitches to make bracelets, rings and more or you can work different stitch patterns, like Solomon’s knot, to create beautiful pieces as well.

Always looking for something new to do with my craft I found the Invisible Spool Knitting technique and had to try it out. Last year in our stocking stuffer event we featured Yoola Design and her finished items. Once you fall in love with her pieces you might want to try it out yourself.

Invisible spool knitting is not quite what you might expect. Although knitting is in the name there is no knitting involved. To work with the wire you will use a crochet hook, but the way that you pull the wire through your stitches gives the look of knitting.

ISK Tool

In the past the only way to ISK (Invisible Spool Knit) was to use one of the starter tools and then cut the piece off. Yael has now created a new tool that allows you to take your piece off of the starter tool so that you can easily work both sides of your piece. This opens more possibilities for what you can make.

One of the great things that you can make with the new automatic release tool is a ball. By simply working 16 rows of ISK and then decreasing down to three stitches I was able to create a great wire crochet ball. I then filled the ball with some beads and added a hook to it so that I could create a great ornament for my tree.
