Calendar is 18” [45.5 cm] wide by 24” [61 cm] long. 

Gauge 

13 sc x 14 rows = 4” [10 cm] x 4”[10 cm]; use any size hook to obtain the gauge. 

MATERIALS

Yarn 

WeCrochet, Brava Bulky (100% acrylic, 136 yds / 124 m, 3.5 oz/ 100 g, CYCA# 5 bulky) 

Color A: #28338 Celestial, 2 skeins

Color B: #28361 White, 2 skeins

Color C: #28352 Red, 2 skeins

Color D: #28347 Hunter, 2 skeins

WeCrochet, Mighty Stitch Bulky (80% acrylic/ 20% superwash wool, 136 yds / 124 m, 3.5 oz/ 100 g, CYCA# 5 bulky) 

Color E: #26818 Blush, 1 skein

Color F: #26820 Silver, 1 skein

Hook

Size J/10 (6.0 mm)

Notions 

Stitch Markers, Tapestry needle, Polyester fiberfil,  1 stiff brush (like a cat brush) for fluffing beard. 1 dowel for hanging 18“ [45.5 cm] long, charms or beads for each day of advent.

  • When working in the round for the nose and baskets, it can be helpful to place a marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of where you are in the round.

CROCHET GNOME ADVENT CALENDAR PATTERN

BACKGROUND

With color A, chain 52.

Row 1: 2 dc in 5th ch from hook (counts as dc and skipped ch), 2 dc in next ch, *skip 2 ch, 2 dc in each of next 2 ch; repeat from * to last 2 ch, skip next ch, dc in last ch, turn.  — 50 dc.

Rows 2-28: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *skip 2 sts. 2 dc in each of next 2 dc; repeat from * across to last 2 dc, skip next dc, dc in top of tch, turn. 

Fasten off, weave in ends. 

Border

With color B, join to top left corner with sl st on RS.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, 3 sc in corner, work 56 sc evenly down left side (2 sc in side of each row), pm, 3 sc in bottom corner, 52 sc evenly across bottom, pm, 3 sc in corner, 56 sc evenly up right side, pm, 3 sc in corner, 52 sc evenly across top, sl st in first sc. Do not turn– 228 sc.

Row 2 (RS): (working all sides except top) Sl st to next sc, ch 3 (counts as dc), [dc in each sc to marker, pm. 2 dc in each of next 3 sc] twice, dc in each sc to marker, dc in next 2 sc, leave top edge sts unworked, turn- 176 dc.

Row 3 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as dc) [dc in each dc to marker, 2 dc in each of next 6 dc] twice, dc in each dc to tch, dc in top of tch, turn to work on top edge- 188 dc.

Row 4 (RS): Ch 1, sc evenly across top edge (working over previous row 2-3  ends and sts from Round 1), turn.

Rows 5 – 9: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Fasten off, leaving long tail for seaming. Fold top edge behind work and sew to first sc round to form slot for dowel for hanging. Weave in ends.

Face

With color E, ch 2.

Row 1 (RS): 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn, DO NOT JOIN- 6 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc across, turn- 12 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn -15 sc.

Row 4: Ch 1, *sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn- 18 sc. 

Row 5: Ch 1, *sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn- 21 sc.

Row 6: Ch 1, *sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn- 24 sc.

Row 7: Ch 1, *sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn- 27 sc.

Row 8: Ch 1, *sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn- 30 sc.

Row 9: Ch 1, *sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn- 33 sc.

Ears

Make 2

With color E, ch 2.

Row 1 (RS): 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn, DO NOT JOIN- 6 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc across, turn- 12 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * across, turn -18 sc.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in FLO in each sc across,  turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, *sc in next sc, sc2tog over next 2 sc; repeat from * across, turn- 12 sc.

Row 6: Ch 1, *sc2tog over next 2 sc; repeat from * across, fasten off with a long tail for seaming- 6 sc. 

Fold ear down at row 4 to shape, Sew in place at top edge of face

Nose

With color E, ch 2.

Round 1 (RS): 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not turn, DO NOT JOIN, work in spiral- 6 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around, do not turn- 12 sc.

Round 3: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around, do not turn- 18 sc.

Rounds 4-5: Sc in each sc around, do not turn. 

Round 6: * Sc2tog over next 2 sc; repeat from * around, fasten off leaving long tail for seaming- 9 sc. 

Stuff lightly and sew in place. 

Optional: With red crayon, color rosy cheeks on either side of nose. 

Eyes

Make 2

With color A, ch 2.

Round 1 (RS): 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off leaving long tail for seaming- 6 sc.

With color B embroider 1 small straight st for a twinkle in his eyes. Sew eyes slightly above nose but close to nose.

Sew face to top center of background, close to top edge, being careful not to sew dowel slot closed. Sew remainder of head in place.

Crochet Gnome Advent Calendar: Beard

With color F cut about 100 lengths of yarn about 20” [51 cm]  long. 

Work 2 strands at a time, insert hook through st at edge of face near the ear, place center of strands on hook, pull strands lightly through face to form loop, tuck ends of strand through loop, pull closed.  Repeat 12 times total down edge of face to chin.  Repeat on opposite side from ear to chin.  Make another 2 rows below ears and nose working center of face (above chin) across. With stiff brush, brush beard until you like the way it looks. Trim bottom of beard to desired length. (Beard shown is about 7” [18 cm] long).

Hat

With color C, ch 2.

Row 1 (WS): 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn, DO NOT JOIN- 6 sc.

Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in each sc across, turn. 

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first dc, sc in each dc to last dc, 2 sc in last dc, turn- 8 sc.

Rows 4-29: Repeat Rows 2-3- 34sc.

Row 30: Repeat Row 2

Edging round: Ch 1, *sc evenly across edge to corner, 3 sc in corner; repeat from * around, al st to first sc to join, fasten off leave long tail for seaming. 

Sew hat to gnome just covering top of face.

Boots

Make 2

With color C, ch 25.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn- 24 sc.

Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in each sc across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each dc across, turn.

Rows 4- 5: Repeat Rows 2 and 3.

Row 6: Repeat Row 2.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in next 6 dc, 2 sc in each of next 12 dc, sc in last 6 dc, turn- 36 sc.

Rows 8- 13: Repeat Rows 2 and 3.

Row 14: Ch 2, dc in first ss, [dc2tog over next 2 sc] 3 times, dc in next 7 sc, [dc2tog over next 2 sc] 4 times, dc in next 7 sc, [dc2tog over next 2 sc] 3 times, dc in last sc, turn- 26 dc.

Row 15: Ch 1, *sc2tog over next 2 dc; repeat from * across, fasten off leave long tail for seaming- 13 sc.

Fold boot in half lengthwise and sew back side, stuff lightly, and sew bottom seam.  Place boot behind bottom edge of background, with color A, sew boot to bottom edge of background. 

Hand

Make 4

With color E, ch 10.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn- 9 sc.

Rows 2-4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 5 (begin fingers): Ch 1, sc in next 3 sc, leave remaining sts unworked, turn- 3 sc.

Rows 6-7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc3tog over all 3 sts, fasten off.

Join yarn to next unworked st on Row 4 and repeat Rows 5-8 for next 2 fingers. Do not fasten off.

Edging (gives dimension to hand):

Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around edge of hand including fingers, place a sl st between fingers, join to first sc with sl st, do not turn.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, skip sl sts, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off leaving long tail for seaming.

Seam 2 hands together leaving opening at wrist. Stuff lightly.

Cuff

With color C, join to wrist with sl st.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in evenly around wrist opening, sl st to first sc to join, do not turn.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off leave long tail for seaming. 

Stuff lightly, sew wrist opening closed and sew hands in place, slightly wrapping cuff around edge of calendar.

CROCHET GNOME ADVENT CALENDAR BASKETS

Make 24

Note: You can make the baskets in solid colors or stripe them or any combination that you like.  Calendar shown uses colors B, C, and D for the baskets.

Round 1 (RS): 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not turn or join (begin working in spiral)- 6 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around- 12 sc.

Round 3: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around- 15 sc.

Rounds 4 – 10: Sc in each sc around.

Round 11: *Ch 1, sc in next sc; repeat from * around, fasten off leaving long tail for seaming.. Sew baskets in place in 3 rows of 8 baskets under hands.

FINISHING

Insert dowel into opening and sew side opening closed.

Sew charms or beads to each basket to label each day of advent. 

Optional:  Using Colorful Placemat, Foam Sheet, or Posterboard, trace and cut out candy cane as place marker for day of the week.
