Turkey Trot Mystery Make Along || 2021
Join the Turkey Trot Mystery Make Along with Marly Bird during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend + some! This is the 3rd annual event and we are thrilled to bring knitters and crocheters together to this big fiber loving family event.
With the success of the previous events including Turkey Trot 2020, Turkey Trot 2019, Tournament of Stitches and the Game Day events, and knowing that 2021 hasn’t really turned out much better than 2020, I wanted to add little fun to our Thanksgiving weekend.
Learn more about the event, grab your supplies and get ready to trot along with me in this mystery knit along and crochet along. #MarlyBirdTurkeyTrot2021

What is the Turkey Trot with Marly Bird?
Turkey Trot Mystery Make Along with Marly Bird 2021 is a FREE and super fun online event held over the US Thanksgiving weekend for BOTH knitters and crocheters.
A make along is when a group of knitters and crochets get together to work on the same project at the same time. In this case we will have one knit pattern and one crochet pattern. Both pieces are the same object but different style. Whether you choose to make one of the patterns or both we would love you to join us for the fun!
In years past, we’ve made larger projects that were wearable. Did you make one of these awesome projects?
When is the 2021 Turkey Trot
Taking place over the weekend of Thanksgiving 2021 we will release one part of the pattern (the clue) over 4 days. Yes, four days of fun. Last year, we extended the time of the event so we could make an amazing large project.
This year, I’ve teamed up with Robyn Chachula to make a simple yet complex design that will not take as much time but will be completely relaxing and really enjoy working on our project and have enough time to finish by the start of December.
Schedule of clues for the Turkey Trot 2021
Each day I will post a link to each clue right here on this blog post (at the bottom). I’ve made the size of the clues about the same size as various traditional Thanksgiving dishes (these are some of my favorites at my house).
- ✨ Thursday, Nov. 25th @ 7pm ET — this is a small clue…like deviled eggs and stuffed mushrooms
- ✨ Friday, Nov. 26th @ 9am ET — this is a medium clue…like a soup & salad
- ✨ Saturday, Nov. 27th @ 9am ET — this is a large clue…like the green bean casserole, bread, turkey and stuffing
- ✨ Sunday, Nov. 28th @ 9am ET — this is a medium clue…like pumpkin or pecan pie with whip cream
❣️The LINK to each clue will be added below! Keep scrolling to get links❣️.
Feel free to work on each section as it is released or wait until Sunday to work the whole project in one shot. ➡️ SPECIAL OFFER TO GET THE FULL AD-FREE PDF PRIOR TO EVENT…KEEP READING ⬅️
It is best to bookmark this page as you will come back to it throughout the event if you are following along with the free pattern. If you don’t know how to bookmark on google, I did a fun video to show you a couple tricks that I find useful.
What Are We Making
IT IS A MYSTERY! I can’t tell you!!! Okay, so I know what we are making as I designed it but I can’t tell you any more than it is a wearable accessory…my take on a VERY POPULAR wearable. This event is a MYSTERY make along so you won’t know what the final project will look like until you make all of the clues.
I can tell you this year, we are making a smaller project than in years past, but it is still something that will keep your interest and keep you guessing up until the end.
There is a change to the instructions this year. Are you ready? I will be doing videos for each section this year to help you along. The videos will be linked in the clue instructions and will be available on the Marly Bird YouTube Channel.
Materials Needed for the Turkey Trot Mystery Make Along 2021
We all know the trouble with getting yarn during 2020 and the trouble has been just as tricky for 2021. Stock on the shelves is low and quantities online are unpredictable. For that reason, I designed a piece that can be made with bulky weight or worsted weight yarn. I want you to be able to grab yarn from your stash or select yarn at the store that is actually available.
Below the materials list, you will see a list of yarns that I think would work well with this Turkey Trot 2021 pattern. I overestimated the yarn amounts so you do not run out of yarn…better to have too much than not enough! Also, we wrote the patterns to be in multiple colors.

- Hook: Size H (5 mm) Crochet Hook–Or any size to obtain gauge with the yarn you are using
- Yarn: worsted weight yarn, 3 colors.

How to choose the right colors?
Self-striping yarn + solid: Let the striping yarn create shifting color patterns.
Neutral + bright: The neutral can showcase a vivid color.
Dark + light: Creates high-contrast striping.
Warm + cool: Warm colors can seem to advance while cool colors recede from the eye.

How to wind yarn from a hank
The yarn we chose for our samples come in hank form. There are many ways to wind this yarn into a ball but my prefered way is with a ball winder and swift. Here are a couple I like from KnitPicks if you are interested.
