Mosaic Crochet Square

Mosaic crochet is so interesting to look at and to work up. Looking at the intricate patterns that you can create with simple stitches can seem intimidating at first. Mosaic Crochet Square Materials

Yarn: Red Heart With Love 3 colors

Hook: J/6mm

Gauge: 32 sts in mosaic pattern = 12”

Pattern Notes

  • Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
  • Change color with two loops left on hook of last st. 
  • Carry yarn up the side of the square
  • Work dc on odd rows of Mosaic Section in front of previous ch-sps.
  • Work the edging around the floats of yarn along the edge to hide them

Mosaic Crochet Square Pattern

With A, ch 33.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn. (32 sc)

Rows 2-8: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. At end of Row 8, change to color B [see pattern notes], fasten off A, turn.

Rows 9-10: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. At end of Row 10, change to color C. Do not fasten off B. 

Row 11: Ch 1, sc in next 4 sc, *ch 2, skip 1 sc, sc in next 3 sc, ch 3, skip 2 sc, sc in next 3 sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc, sc in next 4 sc; repeat from * across to end, turn.

Row 12: Ch 1, sc in next 4 sc, *ch 2, skip next ch-sp, sc in next 3 sc, ch 3, skip next ch-sp, sc in next 3 sc, ch 2, skip next ch-sp, sc in next 4 sc; repeat from * across to end, change to color B, turn. 

Row 13: Ch 1, sc in next 3 sc, *ch 2, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc 2 rows below (in front of ch-sps), sc in next 2 sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc, dc in next 2 sc 2 rows below, ch 2, skip 1 sc, sc in next 2 sc, dc in next sc 2 rows below, ch 2, skip 1 sc, sc in next 2 sc; repeat from * across to last sc, sc in last sc, turn. 

Row 14: Ch 1, sc in next 3 sc, *ch 2, skip ch-sp, sc in next 3 sts, ch 2, skip next ch-sp, sc in next 2 dc, ch 2, skip ch-sp, sc in next 3 sts, ch 2, skip ch-sp, sc in next 2 sc; repeat from * across to last sc, sc in last sc, change to color C, turn.

Row 37: Ch 1, sc in next 4 sc, *dc in next sc 2 rows below, sc in next 3 sc, dc in next 2 sc 2 rows below, sc in next 3 sc, dc in next sc 2 rows below, sc in next 4 sc; repeat from * across to end, turn.

Row 38: Ch 1, sc in each st across, change to color A, fasten off B, turn.

Rows 39-45: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 46 (WS): Ch 1, sc in each sc across, fasten off. 

Weave in all ends. 

Edging

With color A

Round 1 (RS): Join yarn with a slip stitch to the last stitch at the corner of the square, working along the outside edge of the square, 2 sc in corner, evenly space another 30 sc to the next corner, 2 sc in corner (creates corner), join with a slip stitch to the stitch at the edge. Fasten off — 34 sc. 

Repeat for the other outside edge. 

Finishing

Weave in ends. Pin square to 12” by 12”.  Spray with water to block.
