Last week I explained how to think about the project before the collar was added. As you thought about your own project you may decide to make a larger or smaller collar. By adjusting the length of the collar you will alter how far the cardigan closes in the front. If you choose to make a smaller collar chain a smaller amount; if you want a larger more dramatic collar, chain a larger amount. I’m not going to lie, I like a LARGE collar and would probably do more on mine 😉

Woman wearing a cozy, multi-colored shawl with a striped pattern in shades of blue and green, smiling warmly.Note:

This is a cocoon cardigan and is meant to be oversized. Take a look at the photos that I have here. Although this is NOT the same cardigan it is the same construction. You can see how the collar sits in the front and make a big difference in the fit.
Please note that I added a note to last weeks post about making adjustments: If you are finding that your body is not a large as you want it to me after the first cuff is complete, you still have time to add more motifs and make adjustments. Simply undo the edging on the opposite side of the cardigan, add your motifs, reapply the edging and move forward. Yes, you would have to do that BEFORE doing the collar.

Here are the links from last week of other cardigans that have this same construction so you can see some of the ways this cardigan will look. I can’t wait to see your finished cardigans.

Frequently Asked Questions

What yarn do I need for the collar?

Honestly… you’ll need RED HEART® Boutique Unforgettable® yarn! The sample was made with the Regatta color, and you’ll need about 6 balls for a size S/M.

How do I make the collar bigger or smaller?

So here’s the thing… you can totally adjust the collar size! Just change the number of chains you start with. If you want a bigger, more dramatic collar, chain more stitches… if you want it smaller, chain fewer!

What size crochet hook should I use for the collar?

Yes! You’ll want to use a 4 mm [US G-6] Susan Bates® crochet hook for this section.

Where can I find the full pattern after the CAL?

Don’t worry… once the Crochet-along is all finished, the complete pattern will be available over on RedHeart.com!

Can I adjust the body of the cardigan if it’s not the right size?

Oh, absolutely! If you realize the body isn’t quite as big as you’d like *before* you start the collar, you can undo the edging on the opposite side, add more motifs, and then reapply the edging. It’s a little bit of extra work, but totally doable!
