Play 5  is 19” [48 cm] wide by 74” [188 cm] tall.

Gauge 

19 sts by 12 rows in Play 1 stitch pattern = 4.5” [11.5 cm] x 4.25” [11 cm]; use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Crochet Yarn 

Berroco, Vintage DK (52% Acrylic/ 40% Wool/ 8% Nylon, 290 yds / 266 m, 3.5 oz/ 100 g, CYCA# 3 DK), 2 hanks each:

• Buttercream (#2102) (B)
• Red Pepper (#2173) (C)
• Dewberry (#2167) (D)

Crochet Hook

Size G/7 [4.5 mm] or size needed to obtain gauge

SPECIAL STITCHES 

⭐️Double Crochet (Dc): Yarn over hook, Insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * once more.

⭐️ Double Crochet 2 Together (Dc2tog): *Yarn over hook, insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * in next st indicated, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. 

⭐️ Double Crochet 3 Together (Dc3tog): *Yarn over hook, insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * in next 2 sts indicated, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook. 

⭐️ Front Post 3 Double Crochet Cluster (Fp3dc-cl, long bobble): *Yarn over, insert hook around post from front to back to front of stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loop on hook; repeat from * 3 times total in same st, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.

⭐️ Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog): *Insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop; repeat from * in next st indicated, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. 

⭐️Single Crochet (Sc): Insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook.

⭐️ Front Loop Only (FLO): Work into the closest of the top two loops of the stitch indicated, regardless of right side or wrong side.

NOTES

• Gauge is not critical for this project.  Just note that if your gauge is larger than the one listed, you will have a larger project that uses more yarn then listed. 
• Repeat directions between brackets [ ] for the number of times listed.
• Place stitches between parentheses ( ) all in the same indicated stitch. 

• Place Marker in the center stitch and move throughout.  
• Place Marker in the first RS row to help remember which rows are RS. 
• Dividers should match throughout the pattern.  If you started Play 1 with Netflix and Chill, use Netflix and Chill directions (front loop only rows) for all your dividers. 
• Play 1:
  • Project is worked from the center out into a triangle. 
  • Change color when there are 2 loops left of the previous stitch. Carry Color A up side of the project.  Colors B, C, and D can be fastened off after use. 
• Play 2 & 3:
  • Play 2 and 3 are an arrow in shape.  They increase in the center of every row and decrease at the beginning and end of every row. 
  • Color changes are not shown on the stitch diagram. Use the written directions for when to change colors.
• Play 4:
  • Play 4 is an arrow in shape.  It increases in the center of every row and decreases at the beginning and end of every row. 
  • Color changes are shown on the stitch diagram.
• Play 5:
  • Play 5 is an arrow in shape.  It increases in the center of every row and decreases at the beginning and end of every row. 
  • Color changes are not shown on the stitch diagram. Use the written directions for when to change colors. 
  • You have the option to do 1 or 2 colorwork sections in Play 5 depending on the desired length of your shawl.

COLORWORK SECTION

Row 1 (WS): Join color C to WS of shawl with sl st in first st, ch 2 (does not count as a st), skip first st, dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc in each st to marker, 5 dc in marked sc, move marker to center dc, dc in each st to last 3 sts, dc3tog over last 3 sts, change color to B, turn- 111 sts.

Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in next 2 dc, [fp3dc-cl around next dc, sc in next 5 dc] 8 times, fp3dc-cl around next dc, sc in next 2 dc, 3 sc in marked corner dc, move marker to center sc, sc in next 2 dc, fp3dc-cl around next dc, [sc in next 5 dc, fp3dc-cl around next dc] 8 times, sc in next 2 dc, sc2tog over last 2 st, turn.

Row 3 (WS): Ch 2 (does not count as a st), skip first st, dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc in each st to marker, 5 dc in marked sc, move marker to center dc, dc in each st to last 3 sts, dc3tog over last 3 sts, change color to C, turn.

Rows 4-11: Repeat Rows 2-3, change colors between C and B or desired colors. Do not turn at end of Row 11.  Fasten off colors and weave in ends. 

DIVIDER SECTION

Row 12 (WS): Join color A to WS of shawl with sl st to first st, ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each st to marker, 3 sc in marked sc, move marker to center sc, sc in each st to last 2 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts, turn- 111 sts.

Note:  If you wish for a shorter shawl, measure or try on your shawl now.  If you like the length you can fasten off A and wait for Play 6.  Otherwise, continue with directions below. 

Row 13: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), skip first st, dc2tog over next 2 sc, dc in each sc to marker, 5 dc in marked sc, move marker to center dc, dc in each sc to last 3 sts, dc3tog over last 3 sts, change color to C, do not fasten off color A, turn.

Row 14: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in front loop only of each dc to marker, 3 sc in marked dc, move marker to center sc, sc in front loop only of each dc to last 2 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts, turn.

Row 15: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each sc to marker, 3 sc in marked sc, move marker to center sc, sc in each sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts, change color to A, fasten off color C, turn.

Row 16: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), skip first st, dc2tog over next 2 sc, dc in front loop only of each sc to marker, 5 dc in marked sc, move marker to center dc, dc in front loop only of each sc to last 3 sts, dc3tog over last 3 sts, turn.

Row 17: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sts, sc in each dc to marker, 3 sc in marked dc, move marker to center sc, sc in each dc to last 2 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts, fasten off color A, do not turn.

SECOND COLORWORK SECTION AND DIVIDER

Now is the time to decide which concentration level you would like to do for your second colorwork section.

STAY WITH NETFLIX AND CHILL

Repeat Rows 1-12 of Play 5 using color D instead of color C throughout. 

SMOOTH JAZZ

Repeat Rows 1-14 of Play 5 of Smooth Jazz using color D instead of color C.

SHH BE QUIET

Repeat Rows 1-12 of Play 5 of SHH BE QUIET using color D instead of color C.

Optional but helpful:Steam Block to finished size, if desired, before moving to Play 6.
