Shallow Post Stitch Crochet Tutorial

Shallow Post Stitch Tutorial with Marly BirdIf you have been following me on Facebook you would have seen the new messy bun hat that I just published. The Chunky Monkey Bulky hat uses a special stitch called the shallow post stitch. Since it is different than a front or back post stitch I put together a shallow post stitch crochet tutorial.

Front/Back Post Stitch vs. Shallow Post Stitch?

If you already know how to do the front and back post stitch the concept is the same for the shallow post stitch. If you don’t know how to do the front and back post stitch I already have tutorials for them on my YouTube channel.

The difference comes with where you place your hook. Typically, in a front or back post stitch, you would wrap your hook around the whole post of the stitch in the row below. For the shallow post stitch you stick your hook around the ‘V’ portion of the stitch in the row below.

By using the shallow post stitch you can achieve a pin stripe look depending on how you place the colors. I will show you this effect later in the week with a new pattern.

This may sound a little confusing but trust me you will understand after you watch my tutorial.

Patterns to use:

I recently published my Chunky Monkey Bulky Hat, which is a great messy bun hat, and it uses the shallow post stitch. Check out my blog post about this hat and test out this new stitch today!

If you want to try this stitch out and the Chunky Monkey Bulky Hat isn’t for you, come back later this week for a Free Pattern Cowl that will also feature this stitch.
