Completing a knit cable is most often done using a cable needle. This tool allows you to hold the stitches in your cable while you rearrange them to create the cable. Although this tool helps you to complete the stitches it is one more thing that you have to carry around with the project.
This video tutorial will show you how to create a 4 stitch cable, both left and right leaning cables. Knitting cables without a needle can be done over any stitch multiple that you are comfortable with. I will caution you when using slippery yarn. Slippery yarn will make it harder to control your stitches without the needle.
Personally I find that this technique is ideal for smaller stitch counts for your cable. My favorite stitch pattern to use this technique with is the honeycomb stitch. Before you start cables without a needle you may feel more comfortable learning how to do cables with a needle.
