Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2021
The Annual Game Day Mystery Make-Along with Marly Bird is back! It’s time to gear up for Sunday’s Big Game in the way that crafters do best. So, get your needles or your hooks ready for the big Mystery Make-Along project that we will all do together throughout the day. That’s right: we’re calling all knitters and crocheters from around the world to come together on February 7th for Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2021!
If you have joined us over the last couple of years, then you already know that this make-along is a lot of fun. We have always had an AWESOME time connecting with the craft community in this way on Game Day. And each year, we’ve learned a little bit more about how to make the process even better. (Is that possible? Yes it is!) Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2021 is going to be better than ever.
It doesn’t matter at all what team you’re rooting for on Game Day. In fact, it doesn’t matter if you don’t want to root for any team at all. Either way, let’s get together online, have a wonderful time crafting, and make some beautiful pieces before the end of the day! Oh, and in addition to all that – there will be Game Day prizes! When is the Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2021?
This year’s game day make-along will take place on Sunday February 7, 2021.
We will release the first “play” of the day at 8am EST. Then we will release additional “plays” every hour throughout the day. We’ll release the last “play” at 6pm EST.
Yes, that means you will have 10 straight hours of knitting or crocheting to enjoy! One of the things that we noticed in previous years is that some of us (especially the knitters) often need just a bit more time to complete the instructions than what we had in years past. So, with that in mind, we extended the game play to ten hours.
Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2021 is the fourth annual event. Just like the past three years, all “plays” will be linked below⬇️. Click the link for the hour that you wish to follow and you will be directed to the “play” for that hour.

How do I participate in Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2021?
To participate in the game day make-along…
- Join the Marly’s Minions Facebook group to post progress pictures and find extra help. Plus it’s the best place to connect with the crafting community on Game Day.
- Favorite the Game Day Crochet 2021 project or Game Day Knitting 2021 project on Ravelry. Make sure to log in your details there so others can see, too. The more people who join Game Day, the better.
- On Sunday, Feb 7, 2021 come back to this blog page every hour from 8am EST to 6pm EST to get the next “play” for your project.
- As you work on the project, post progress pictures on Facebook and Instagram with the tag #GameDayMakeAlong. When you do, you’ll have the chance to win various surprise mystery prizes!

What are we making?
This is a Mystery Make-Along, so we can’t tell you too much just yet. There is both a knit version and a crochet version of the mystery item. This year the two items are very similar to one another. Please note, since there is a knit version and a crochet version, it’s important to make sure that you are reading the correct play each time!
What materials do I need?
Yarn Color for Both
Once again, Marly has chosen to incorporate some colorwork into the pieces along with the pattern stitches. After all, who doesn’t love color?! To ensure that the colorwork shows up, it is important that you choose colors that are not too close to one another in shade.
The samples were worked up in 2 colors. It’s best to choose light and dark colors for your yarn. Furthermore, we recommend that you do not choose a variegated yarn.
For the Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2021 project, you will need the following:
Crochet Mystery Make-Along Supplies
Yarn
Caron® Swirl Cakes™ (8 oz/227 g; 252 yds/230 m)
- Color A – 1 ball
- Color B – 1 ball
Other Yarns That Would Work
Marly suggests that you could use stash yarn for this project as long as it is all the same weight (5), the colors blend well together, and you achieve gauge.
Gauge
Marly doesn’t usually give gauge prior to the event but this year she has decided it’s a good idea in case people want to use different yarn. Gauge: 11 sc = 4″
Other Supplies
- Size K [6.5 mm] crochet hooks (or size to obtain gauge…gauge is given at start of event)
- Stitch Markers, removable
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Knitting Mystery Make-Along Supplies
Yarn
Caron® Swirl Cakes™ (8 oz/227 g; 252 yds/230 m)
- Color A – 1 ball
- Color B – 1 ball

Marly doesn’t usually give gauge prior to the event but this year she has decided it’s a good idea in case people want to use different yarn. Gauge: 10 sts and 20 rows = 3” [7.6 cm] in garter stitch
Knitters Tools
- Size 10.5 [6.5 mm] 24″ circular (or size to obtain gauge…gauge is given at start of event)
- highly recommend a needle with a pointy tip!
- Cable Needle
- Stitch Markers, both standard and removable
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
PRIZES: What can I win?
As we mentioned, there will be various surprise mystery prizes given out throughout Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2021. They’ll go our to random people who use the tag #GameDayMakeAlong on Instagram. (Follow Marly on Insta @ themarlybird)
In addition to the prizes given throughout the day, there’s at least one big GRAND PRIZE PACKAGE! Depending on how many people participate in Game Day, there might be more than one! To have a chance to win, go to the Marly’s Minions group, add a picture of your finished project to the post labeled FINISHED PROJECTS, and sit back to see if you are the lucky winner of a surprise prize package from Yarnspirations.
How many GRAND PRIZES are there?
That all depends on how many of you participate! We will give away one prize package for every 100 finished projects posted (one entry per person please). For example: if 400 people post finished projects by 11:59 pm EST, Feb. 8, 2021 then we will give away 4 prize packages.
Therefore, the more people that participate, the more chances you have at a Grand Prize. Be sure to share the make-along with friends you think will love this. Plus, truly, the more the merrier. The whole fun of a make-along is the big group of community all knitting and crocheting together.
‼️IMPORTANT‼️: All finished project photos must be submitted by 11:59 pm EST on Monday February 8th. The winners will be randomly selected and announced on Tuesday February 9th. Open to USA and Canada; void where prohibited.
