Free Pattern Crochet Cowl: Jilly Bean




This free pattern crochet cowl: Jilly Bean Cowl is a great quick project for any crocheter! Using only 1 ball of  yarn this project is not only quick but cheap to make! And it’s a great addition to your winter wardrobe – an extra layer  around your neck when outside, alone once it warms up a bit, or around the house when it’s particularly chilly. Depending on the colors you use it works for both men and women. Perfect for a pre-teen or an adult.

Jilly Bean Cowl

Pattern Details

Measurements

Preteen, (adult)

5″ x 20″ [12.7 x 50.8 cm] , (7″ x 20″ [17.78 x 50.8 cm])

Gauge

4 1/4 sts and 4 rows = 1″ [2.54 cm]

 Yarn

Red Heart, “Boutique Treasures” (70% acrylic and 30% wool, 151 yds/100g), shown in color #68445 Abstract

Hook

6.5 mm/K (Marly uses Addi Crochet Hooks)

Notions

Removable Stitch Markers (Marly uses these)

Stitches Used (and YouTube Video links to help you learn)

  • Chain Stitch (ch)
  • Single Crochet (sc)




Pattern Stitch

Linen Stitch (flat): worked over an even number of chains

Row 1 (foundation row): Single crochet (sc) into 2nd chain from hook, *chain (ch) 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * to last ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in 1-ch space, *ch 1, sc in next 1-ch space; rep from * to last 1-ch sp, sc in last sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 1, *sc in 1-ch space, ch 1; rep from * to last 1-ch sp, sc in last sc, turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 for pattern stitch.

Instructions are given for all sizes in pattern with the larger size in parenthesis.

Pattern

Body

Ch 22 (30) and follow the Linen Stitch (see pattern stitch) until piece measures approx 19 3/4″ [50.16 cm] ending with a row 3.

Finishing

Fold the cowl with right sides together, crochet a row 2 putting the hook through both the 1-ch space on the working row and the foundation row. The 1-ch spaces should line up perfectly if you ending with a row 3 before the fold. Fasten off the yarn. Weave in the ends.

And voila, your neck is warm and you are fashionable! This Jilly Bean Cowl is fun to make and whenever I wear it I get a LOT of compliments. I hope you enjoy making it – I can’t wait to see your photos!
