Notes

Base Garter Tab

With Color A and size 7 DPNs, CO 3 sts.

Knit 6 rows in Garter st.

Without turning the work, pick up 3 sts on each edge of the Garter tab, evenly distributing them between 3 more size 7 DPNs — 12 sts total [3 on each needle].

Knit one round even.

Increases (Building the Square Base)

Rnd 1: Knit.

Rnd 2: *K1, M1L, knit to 1 st before end of needle, M1R, k1*; repeat 3 more times — 8 sts increased [2 at each corner].

Repeat Rnds 1 and 2, alternating colors every 2 rounds after Rnd 2.

When there are 172 sts [43 on each needle], change to size 7 circular needles. Place a marker at the beginning of the round AND at each corner. There will be 43 sts between each marker.

Turning (Garter Stitch Edge)

Rnd 1: Knit.

Rnd 2: Purl.

Rnd 3: Knit.

Rnd 4: Purl.

These four rounds create a turning line… the garter stitch edge where your base meets your body. This prevents rolling and gives you a clean, crisp transition.

Body (Striped Stockinette)

Work in Stockinette st, maintaining 2-round stripes, until the body is 8 inches tall. [Sample was worked with 64 rounds, including turning rounds, ending with Color B.]

Cut Color B and continue working only in Color A. Work 8 rounds in Gtr St (circular).

Handle Openings & Eyelets

Rnd 1: K14, BO 15 sts, k14, sl marker, k43, sl marker, k14, BO 15 sts, k14, sl marker, k43.

Rnd 2: P5, yo, p2tog, p7, CO 15 sts with backward loop, p7, p2tog, yo, p5, sl marker, p5, yo, p2tog, p9, yo, p2tog, p7, p2tog, yo, p9, p2tog, yo, p5; repeat from * once more [172 sts].

Work in Gtr st (circular) for 8 more rounds [9 ridges total]. BO.

Finishing: Weave in Ends

Use the bury-in-ends method to weave in your ends neatly.

Blocking (Optional but Recommended)

Block your bag if desired. Wet-block (using your favorite wool wash) will set your stripes, even out any tension inconsistencies, and help your eyelets sit properly for the i-cords. Lay flat to dry or hang to block into shape.

I-Cord Handles

Make 2 I-cords and thread them through the eyelets on each side of the bag.

I-Cord Instructions: With Color B and size 5 DPNs, CO 3 sts. Slide the sts to the other end of the needle without turning. Knit. Repeat until the cord measures 24 inches long. Cut yarn and thread the end through the 3 live stitches, pull tight, and weave the end into the center of the cord.

Thread each i-cord through the eyelets on one side of the bag. You can adjust how tight the cord cinches by how much you pull when threading.

How do I make the stripes look clean without jogs?

This offsets your color-change line so it doesn’t create a visible diagonal jog. It sounds complicated the first time, but once you do it a couple times, it becomes automatic. Do I have to hold the yarn double?

Yes… the pattern is designed with yarn held double throughout. This creates the fabric weight and drape that makes the finished bag sturdy but not stiff. If you used single-strand yarn, you’d need to either go up several needle sizes (changing the whole gauge) or accept a much drapier, less structured bag. Holding yarn double is a great skill to master… it makes a lot of bulky-weight patterns suddenly accessible with regular worsted-weight yarn.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Technically yes, but you’ll need to swatch and adjust. If you want to use a bulky-weight yarn held single, you’d knit on smaller needles to maintain the same gauge (or test your own). If you go lighter (DK held double), you’d need larger needles. The key is hitting that 18 sts/28 rows = 4″ gauge… as long as you do that, your finished bag should be the same size and weight. But honestly? Worsted weight held double is the sweet spot for this design.

Is this a good project for learning circular knitting?

Absolutely. This pattern teaches you the fundamentals: cast-on options (garter tab), increasing (M1L/M1R for shaping), working in the round on both dpns and circulars, color changes, eyelets, and a simple i-cord.
