At the beginning of the year, I created the Bernie Sanders-inspired knit and crochet mittens. He had made such an impression at the inauguration with his mittens. Regardless of what you think about the politician, as a crafter you can appreciate the style of the mittens. My mittens aren’t exact replicas of his. However, they were inspired by his design. Plus, of course, they’re cozy mittens that you can continue to wear throughout fall and winter. So they aren’t so much a political statement as they are an everyday wearable accessory.
The Inspiration for These Knit and Crochet Mittens
Sen. Bernie Sanders wore memorable mittens to the inauguration — and now you can make your own! I’ve had tons of people reach out to me about patterns, and they’re now available: a free crochet pattern AND a free knitting pattern for the Feel The Heat Mittens by Marly Bird. (These mittens are inspired by the mittens Bernie Sanders wore and have no affiliation with him or with the original mittens. These are a fashion statement; not a political statement.)
The original mittens were made of recycled sweaters, cut up and sewn together. I’ve designed colorwork patterns in the knit and crochet patterns that look similar to the ones that Bernie wore. These patterns are worked in worsted weight yarn in the round.
These patterns each have colorwork charts you can print out and follow. Plus, there is a video for each of them to walk you through it!
*Disclaimer: Let me state clearly that neither this pattern or myself are affiliated or endorsed by Sen. Sanders. This pattern is an artist’s interpretation of the original pattern and not a 100% copy as that would not be right.
If you make this pattern PLEASE be sure to share with me on social media! #MarlyBird #MMMDI #MarlyBirdYouTubeChannel
You don’t have to like Bernie Sanders to love these mittens. BiCrafty people can make both the knit and crochet versions. Change up the color choices to suit your own style.
