Crochet Feather Stitch Pattern

The crochet feather stitch is a fun pattern that creates a dense and squishy fabric that is also reversible and a great crochet stitch for guys and girls! It is a perfect crochet stitch for blankets, pillows, or accessories. It can be made in one or many colors and is easy to remember since it is a one row repeat! Learn how to crochet the feather stitch pattern with this video tutorial and written instructions.

CROCHET FEATHER STITCH DETAILS

MEASUREMENTS

STITCH MULTIPLE

The crochet feather stitch has a stitch multiple of 2 + 2. This will make your project have an even number of feather stitches with a half double crochet at the start and at the end of a row.

GAUGE

The crochet feather stitch can have any gauge possible with your desired yarn and hook combination. The stitch is beautiful with lace weight yarn or bulky yarn.

To determine the gauge of the feather stitch, I suggest crocheting a piece at least 8 stitch multiples wide. To do so, ch 20, then follow the instructions below for the stitch pattern.

MATERIALS

YARN

Any yarn can be used for the crochet feather stitch. This stitch DOES eat up yarn (much like a puff stitch or a bobble stitch does) so be sure you have enough yarn for the project.

  • Multi Color Sample made with Chic Sheep by Marly Bird Yarn:
    • Color A: Polo
    • Color B: Green Tea
    • Color C: Sunset
    • Color D: Dragon Fruit
    • Color E: Sangria
    • Color F: Poolside

HOOK

Any hook can be used for the crochet feather stitch. I recommend using a larger hook than is suggested for the yarn to make the stitch look the best.

  • Sample used : US J [6 mm] or size to obtain gauge

CROCHET FEATHER STITCH SPECIAL STITCHES

Beg-Feather St – Beginning Feather Stitch: yarn over hook, insert hook into the next chain space, yarn over hook, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), [note-when you pull up any loop make sure it is same same height as the previous stitch; bring the hook up parallel to the work so the loop is elongated] yarn over hook, insert hook into skipped stitch/chain/chain space right below the current chain space, yarn over hook, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over hook, insert hook into the next chain space, yarn over hook, pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), yarn over hook, pull through all 7 loops on hook.

CROCHET FEATHER STITCH WRITTEN PATTERN

Chain a multiple of 2 +2

Row 1: Hdc in second chain from hook, *ch 1, skip 1 chain, hdc in next ch; repeat from * to last chain. Ch 1, turn — Odd number of hdc, even number of ch-1 spaces.

Row 2: Hdc in first hdc, ch 1, Beg-Feather St (see special stitches), ch 1, *Feather St (see special stitches), ch 1; repeat from * to end of row, hdc in last stitch. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until you reach the desired height. On last row instead of doing a ch 1, turn just fasten off. Weave in ends.

CROCHET FEATHER STITCH WITH FOUNDATION STITCHES

It is possible to begin with a row of foundation half double crochet stitches vs chain stitches should you wish. To do so, follow the instructions below:

Work an even number of foundation half double crochets +1.

Row 1: Hdc in first hdc, *ch 1, skip 1 hdc, hdc in next hdc; repeat from * to end.

For the last row to match the first row work the following row:

Last Row: Hdc in first stitch, * hdc in chain space, hdc in the feather stitch; repeat from * to end of row, hdc in chain space, hdc in last stitch.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
