Hey, bestie ๐Ÿ’›

You know what makes a cup of coffee even better? When it’s wearing a handmade sweater. โ˜•๐Ÿงถ

The Yule Fuel Crochet Coffee Cozy is one of those patterns that’s small, fast, and SO satisfying to make. It uses a technique called split single crochet colorwork… which creates this gorgeous, smooth stranded fabric that looks like knit colorwork but is 100% crochet. The diamond motif is festive and fun, and the whole thing works up in an evening.

This is one of my favorite gift patterns because you can make a whole stack of them in a weekend. Teacher gifts, stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, gifts for the coffee lover in your life… or just treat yourself. You deserve a fancy coffee cozy too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And here’s the best part… this is an adventurous beginner pattern. If you’ve never tried crochet colorwork before, a coffee cozy is the perfect small project to learn on before tackling something bigger. Low commitment, high reward. ๐Ÿ’›

What Is Split Single Crochet?

If you haven’t tried split single crochet before… you’re about to fall in love with it.

A split single crochet is worked by inserting your hook between the two legs of the stitch below, rather than under the top two loops. This creates a fabric that looks remarkably like stockinette knitting… smooth, even, and with beautiful stitch definition.

When you add colorwork to split single crochet, the result is stunning. The colors sit neatly next to each other without the “bumpy” look that regular single crochet colorwork sometimes has. It’s the closest crochet gets to looking like knit Fair Isle… and it’s easier than you think.

Split single crochet colorwork is a crochet technique that creates smooth, knit-like stranded fabric by inserting the hook between the legs of each stitch rather than under the top loops. It is best for crocheters who want the look of knit colorwork without switching crafts.

โœจ Designer Tip: The key to good split sc colorwork is keeping your stitches LOOSE. Pull up a longer loop than you normally would. If your stitches are too tight, the colorwork won’t show clearly and it’ll be hard to insert your hook. When in doubt, go up a hook size.

Gift Ideas with This Cozy

Yarn & Materials

This cozy uses WeCrochet Brava Sport… a 100% acrylic sport weight that’s affordable, machine washable, and has great stitch definition for colorwork. You only need small amounts of each color, so this is a fantastic stash-buster project.

Colors used:

๐Ÿฉถ Color A: Silver (28401) โ€” the background color

๐Ÿฉท Color B: Fairy Tale (28384) โ€” diamond motif color 1

โค๏ธ Color C: Rouge (28397) โ€” diamond motif color 2

Want to customize? Any sport weight yarn will work. Choose 3 colors with good contrast so the diamond pattern reads clearly. This pattern works beautifully in team colors, school colors, or seasonal palettes.

โœจ Designer Tip: This is stranded colorwork, NOT tapestry crochet. Keep your floats loose on the back… don’t crochet over them or the fabric will be too thick and stiff for a cozy that needs to stretch around a cup.

Notes

  • Body of project is worked in joined rounds of split single crochet. Join is made by removing hook from free loop, insert hook under top 2 loops of first st from back to front, replace free loop and pull through.
  • Place marker in first stitch throughout project.
  • Change color when there are 2 loops left on the hook of the previous color.
  • Do not float a color more than 2 rounds. Cut the color and rejoin when it is used again.
  • Do not float a color more than 5 sts without tucking the color.
  • Cozy is stranded color work not tapestry colorwork. Be sure to keep your floats loose and not too tight. If they are tight you will reduce the elastic nature of the fabric and your project might not fit. You can always go up a hook size or two to keep your stitches from getting too small.
  • Do not crochet over the floats or the fabric will become too thick.
  • It is easy to tighten up your split single crochet stitches. Be sure to pull up a longer loop to keep your stitches from getting too small. If your stitches are too tight, you will not see the colorwork as clearly and it will be difficult to insert your hook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is split single crochet?

Split single crochet is a technique where you insert your hook between the two legs of the stitch below, rather than under the top two loops. This creates a smooth, knit-like fabric with excellent stitch definition. It is especially popular for colorwork because the colors sit neatly next to each other.

Is this the same as tapestry crochet?

No. This is stranded crochet colorwork, not tapestry crochet. In stranded colorwork, the unused color floats behind the work (like in knit Fair Isle). In tapestry crochet, you crochet over the unused color. Stranded colorwork creates a thinner, more elastic fabric which is better for a cozy that needs to stretch around a cup.

Can I use a different weight yarn?

Yes! The colorwork chart works with any yarn weight. Just adjust your hook size to match the yarn and keep in mind that the finished size will change. Worsted weight will make a larger cozy, fingering weight will make a smaller one. Swatch to check your size against your cup.

How long does this take to make?

Most crocheters can finish this cozy in 2-4 hours. The colorwork section (Rounds 6-12) takes the longest because you are managing color changes. The border rounds at the top and bottom work up very quickly.

What cups does this fit?

At 8 inches in circumference, this cozy fits standard disposable coffee cups and most travel tumblers. The split single crochet fabric has natural stretch, so it accommodates slight size variations. If your cup is significantly larger or smaller, adjust your foundation chain count in multiples of 4.

Can I make this without the colorwork?

Absolutely! Work the entire cozy in one color using split single crochet for a beautiful textured solid cozy. You will still get that gorgeous knit-like fabric without the color changes.

Final Thoughts

There’s something really special about making small, quick gifts. They don’t take over your life, they don’t stress you out, and the person who receives them is genuinely touched that you made something just for them.

The Yule Fuel Coffee Cozy is one of those “keep the pattern handy” projects… because once you make one, you’re going to want to make twelve. Different colors for different people, different seasons, different moods. It’s the kind of pattern that keeps on giving. โ˜•๐Ÿ’›
