What is a Gansey Sweater:

Before jumping into this book it might help to explain what gansey means. A Gansey sweater is a hard-wearing, seamless sweater worn by Fishermen who spent their days at sea. It originates from the Island of Guernsey, where it was developed over 400 years ago.

Most of the time the patterns for these sweaters are passed down through the generations not through written word but through memorization.

Inside the Book:

It has been 25 years since the first edition of knitting ganseys was published by Interweave. Within the book you will get to explore the traditions of knitting a gansey sweater.

Book Review of Knitting Ganseys-Purchase your copy

This book is not just a pattern book but dives deep into the construction techniques so that you can successfully create your own. Walk through the sample with Beth and then, when you are confident, work on the full scale versions for yourself.

Written the way that Beth teaches her classes you are sure to have success with this traditional sweater construction. Chapter one starts you off with the history of the sweater and then you move into the cast on of your sampler.

You will find that although we are talking about a knit sweater, which many of us have already made, there is a whole host of new techniques used in Gansey sweaters. Test out some of these techniques in your own sweater designs. As you read through the book you will understand why these sweaters were classified as hard working and durable.

Grab a copy of the book and make a gansey sweater for yourself.
