Color Changes Make Every Granny Square Unique

One of the most exciting things about crochet granny squares is their infinite color possibilities! The same pattern can look completely different depending on the yarns you choose. With this iPad cozy, you have two great options:

1️⃣ Use a single long-color-changing yarn (like Caron Cakes, Chroma Worsted, or Lion Brand Mandala) and separate the colors before crocheting for controlled color placement.
2️⃣ Combine multiple solid yarns to create a planned gradient or contrasting color effect.

If you love seeing how colors transform a simple granny square, check out these incredible patterns from Briana K Designs for inspiration:

🎨 Gemstone Hues Crochet Blanket – A bold, color-shifting masterpiece.
🎨 Gemstone Hues Crochet Hat – A great example of how color gradients create a sophisticated look.
🎨 Shades of Diamond Pullover – A stunning granny-inspired sweater!
🎨 Diamond Granny Stitch Crochet Pumpkin – A festive twist on the granny square!

These patterns prove that granny squares can be modern, stylish, and versatile—just like this iPad cozy!

NOTES

  • Cozy is made with granny square motifs that are joined together as you crochet.  You can start with any motif on the layout and join motifs in any order you wish.
  • Separate the colors in the cake into the 5 different colors listed in the materials section and shown in the pictures.
  • Securely weave in the tail of the adjustable ring to guarantee that it doesn’t pop open with use.
  • Weave in the tails as you go. Do not wait until the very end to weave them in.
  • Each round of color is fastened off at the end and the new color is rejoined using standing double crochet.
  • If you would like a cozy a different size, you can make a slightly larger or smaller motif.  For instance a 5” [12.5 cm] motif, makes a 14” [35.5 cm] wide by 10.5” [26.5 cm] tall cozy.  Also a 4” [10 cm] motif, makes a 11.25” [28.5 cm] wide by 8.5” [21.5 cm] tall cozy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a book cozy or Kindle cozy?

A book cozy (or e-reader cozy) is a small sleeve that fits around a book, Kindle, iPad, or other reading device to protect it from scratches, drops, and the general chaos of being carried around. Crocheted and knitted versions are beautiful and practical… they protect your device while looking handmade and personal. They’re also wonderfully giftable for the reader in your life. A well-fitted crocheted Kindle case is a lovely everyday carry item that reminds you of the person who made it every time you reach for your device.

How do I make sure the cozy fits my specific device?

Measure your device before starting! Length, width, and thickness all matter. The cozy should fit snugly without being so tight that inserting and removing the device is difficult. Most cozy patterns are worked to specific measurements or can be easily adjusted by adding or removing rows and stitches based on your gauge. The thickness of your crochet or knit fabric adds a bit to the external dimensions, so account for that when calculating how many stitches wide your cozy should be. A test piece of swatched fabric around your device before finishing is smart.

Is a granny square book cozy functional as well as decorative?

It’s primarily decorative with modest protection! Crocheted granny square fabric has gaps in the stitch structure that don’t protect against impacts the way a padded case would. But for protecting against everyday scratches, keeping dust off, identifying your book in a bag, and adding a beautiful handmade touch to your reading life… absolutely! For tablets and e-readers you’re less worried about dropping, a crocheted cozy is perfectly practical. For valuable devices you drop frequently, add a padded insert or use the cozy over a protective case.

What yarn is best for a crochet book or tablet cozy?

Cotton works beautifully… it’s durable, washable, and doesn’t stretch as much as wool. Worsted or DK weight cotton gives a fabric sturdy enough to maintain the cozy’s shape. If you want a padded cozy, work in a denser stitch (tighter single crochet) which creates thicker fabric, or sandwich a thin layer of quilt batting between an outer and inner layer before seaming. Avoid very stretchy yarns that would let the cozy sag. The color and pattern choice is where you can really express yourself… this is a great project for those special, beautiful skeins you’ve been saving.

How long does it take to make a book or Kindle cozy?

Very quickly! A simple rectangular cozy in worsted weight cotton takes an hour or two… maybe 3 to 4 hours for a larger tablet cozy. Granny square cozies made from one or two squares are faster still. This is a perfect “I need a handmade gift by tomorrow” project. You can make several in an evening. They also use very little yarn… a single leftover skein from another project is usually more than enough. Book cozies are the perfect “I want to make something but I only have a little time and yarn” answer.
