How to Read Tunisian Crochet Patterns

Tunisian Crochet patterns can be written in 2 ways; crochet-wise or knit-wise. At the Marly Bird House, we write ours crochet-wise. Below is an example of both ways.

Written Tunisian Patterns – Crochet-wise Example

Row 2: Fwd: (Loop on hook counts as first st), TPS in next st, *TSS in next st, TKS in next st, TPS in next 2 sts; repeat from * across to last 4 sts, TSS in next st, TKS in next st, TPS in next st, TSS in last st. Rtn: Work loops off as normal.

This means you will TPS in the second st in the row. Then you will repeat doing TSS in the next stitch, TKS in the next stitch, and TPS in the next 2 sts across the row until you have 4 stitches left on your row. The last 4 stitches you will do a TSS, then TKS, then TPS, and finally a TSS in the last stitch. When following an * you repeat the directions across the row however many times the pattern calls for it or for however many stitches left you should have.

Written Tunisian Patterns – Knit-wise Example

Row 2: Fwd: (Loop on hook counts as first st), TPS, *TSS, TKS, TPS 2; repeat from * across to last 4 sts, TSS, TKS, TPS, TSS. Rtn: Work loops off as normal.

It means the same thing as the one written more like a crochet pattern. The difference between knit-wise written patterns is they are more condensed. When you see a number “#” after a stitch it means to do that stitch in the next # stitches, and not to do # stitches in the same stitch. At Marly Bird house, we will write ours crochet-wise, since we like to have a bit more definition to our instructions.

Tunisian Crochet Symbol Diagram Basics

Tunisian Crochet Charts are made in a grid fashion where each box is a stitch. The box will contain both what you will stitch in the forward and return pass. To read the chart, start on the right hand side.

The first stitch will be a TSS or a TSS and a chain, just remember that first TSS is the loop already on your hook.

The following stitch you will look and see what the symbol is on the lower part of the box is and do that stitch on your work. Continue across until you finish the forward pass.

To start the return pass, now read the same line of boxes but from the left to the right. You will work the symbols you see in the upper part of each box across. Below is some of the common Tunisian crochet symbols.
