Tunisian Slip Stitch

Just as the name describes this stitch slips the next stitch onto your hook, and that’s it. You can slip TSS-wise or TPS-wise. meaning you can slip the next sts (inserting your hook under the front vertical strand) with your yarn in the back (TSS-wise) or with your yarn in the front (TPS-wise). We will work on slipping both ways, but there are a ton more. The resulting fabric is incredibly woven in look and can be dense if you don’t adjust your hook size. See below for this week’s homework that uses the Tunisian Slip Stitch.

Tunisian Reverse Stitch

This confusingly named stitch is actually quite simple. You will insert your hook in the back vertical strand before yarning over and picking up a stitch. You insert the hook from right to left the same way you insert your hook for TSS, except in the BACK strand instead of the front (for TSS). What happens is it pushes your return pass (that chain) to the front. This can give the look of purl stitches. When combined with TKS (knit stitches) the resulting fabric can be adorable.

Tunisian Wrap Stitch

This handy little stitch makes a cute organized fabric. It is made by yarning over your hook before creating the next 2-3 stitches, then pulling those stitches through the yarn over. You will see it in a pattern as follows: Yarn over, tss in next 2 sts, pull yarn over over prev 2 tss . It seems counter intuitive, so practicing always helps.

Note: You can substitute Red Heart Soft for WeCrochet Brava.

Hook

Size L/11 (8.0 mm) Tunisian Hook at least 10″ long

Size I/9 (5.5 mm) regular crochet hook for edging.

SPECIAL TUNISIAN CROCHET STITCHES

Foundation Slip Stitch for Tunisian

First Stitch: Ch 1, insert hook into back ridge of chain, yarn over and pull up loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (creates chain), draw through next loop on hook (creates slip stitch).

Next Stitch: Insert hook into chain just created (vertical bar furthest from hook), yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through both loops on hook (first loop creates chain, second creates slip stitch)

Slip Stitch Purlwise

Move yarn to front of work, insert hook from right to left in front vertical strand of stitch indicated, move yarn to back of work.

TUNISIAN STITCH DIAGRAM

NOTES

• Pattern is written for 5 colors but as the diagram shows you can use 3 if you wish. Any odd number of colors works for the pattern.
• Change color at end of return pass when 2 loops are left on the hook.

KIRKTON TUNISIAN CROCHET COWL PATTERN

Chain or Foundation Slip Stitch 29 with color A.

Row 1: (RS) Fwd: Pull up loop in 2nd st from hook and each st across. Rtn: Change color to B, work loops off as normal to end, change color to C.

Row 2 (RS): Fwd: (Loop on hook counts as first st) *slip next st purlwise, TSS in next st; repeat from * across. Rtn: Change color to D, work loops off as normal to end, change color to E.

Row 3 (RS): Fwd: (Loop on hook counts as first st) *TSS in next st, slip next st purlwise; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, TSS in last 2 sts. Rtn: Change color to A, work loops off as normal to end, change color to B.

Repeat rows 2-3 until project measures 30″ [76 cm] changing colors in the following order: A, B, C, D, E, ending on a Row 3.

Last Row: *Slip next st purlwise and pull through loop on hook, TSS in next st and pull though loop on hook, repeat from * across.

Fasten off, leave long tail for seaming.
