Knit Santa Basket
Knitting for the holiday doesn’t mean that you have to make a garment or accessory. Try making a basket to put your gift in. Not only is this a great way to reduce waste but it also makes a great decoration for years to come. The Jolly Knit Santa Basket is a great project to work up for your holiday crafting. Knit Santa Basket
The Jolly Santa Basket is a FREE knit pattern from Yarnspirations. Below you will find a great video tutorial showing you how to work through this pattern and make a basket for yourself, or as a gift.
Most noticeable about this pattern that is different from others that you might have worked before is that you are going to be working with four strands of yarn at a time. This helps to create a more dense fabric, which helps the basket hold its shape. You will see in the materials that you are going to need only one ball of the red color.
How are we going to hold four strands together with one ball you might be thinking. We will need to create our own ‘balls’ of four strands to make it work. There are instructions in the pattern on how to achieve this. I like to use yarn butterflies when working with color work. Try making your own with my video tutorial with Anne Berk.
This pattern is not specific in the cast on method that you need to use. Pick what is most comfortable to you. I prefer the long tail cast on method for all patterns. Give it a try if you haven’t before and see if it works better for you.
Tips for the Knit Santa Basket Pattern
- Working with 4 strands: Because you will be working with four strands at a time it is important that you are paying attention to your stitches. Make sure as you work that you don’t miss one of the strands or you will get loops throughout your project.
- Adding structure to your basket: Use a yoga mat as a base for your basket, this will help it keep its shape when there is nothing inside of it.
- Working intarsia: Learn how to manage your yarn while working intarsia along with out to best burry your ends for a secure finish.
