Snowboarder Chunky Hat

Watching the Winter Olympics is always a treat for me. Not just because it is the greatest example of human competition and perseverance, but because of the amazing knit fashion of the slopes! You know what I mean if you are an avid knitter and crocheter like me. Well, the other night I saw the amazing Chloe Kim win the snowboarding competition and she was wearing a very simple and fun chunky ribbed hat by Burton. I knew I could recreate my own version of the hat so I did. The Snowboarder Chunky Hat is now a free knitting pattern for you to enjoy! (There is a Crochet version as well if you are a crocheter)

I’ve had many people sent me messages asking how I did the floppy tassel pom pom for the Snowboarder Chunky Hat. Well, I did a video for how to make the entire hat and in that video I show you how.
But because it is apparent that many are not watching up to that part I’ve edited an excerpt of the video just for the Floppy Tassel Pom Pom. AND, I show you how to use a button to make it removable.
Enjoy Everybody! If you do make a Snowboarder Chunky Hat, PLEASE share it with me and include it in your Ravelry Projects page linking back to the pattern. That helps me so much 🙂 THANKS!!!!!

With the Italian cast on, CO 44. Place marker and join to work in the round.
*K1, P1; repeat from * around. When you get to the end of the round, slip the marker and continue in the pattern.
Work in the K1, P1 pattern until the hat measures 9-11″ from cast on edge. Depending on how tall you want the hat to be. The finished sample stopped at 9″.

Crown

Rnd 1: *K2tog tbl, P2tog; rep from * around–22 stitches remain.
Rnd 2: *K1, P1; rep from * around.
Rnd 3:*K2tog tbl, P2tog; rep from * around–11 stitches remain.

Cut the yarn leaving a 10″ tail. Thread the yarn through a bent tip tapestry needle then insert the needle through each of the remaining stitches on the needle as if to knit and remove from the needle. When all the stitches are on the tail, pull it like a drawstring and secure the tail to the inside of the hat.

Finishing and Pom Pom

Using the bent tip tapestry needle, weave in any remaining ends.
One of the fun things about Chloe’s hat is the floppy pom pom on the top. To make the pom I suggest using a pom pom maker in a large size (4″ or larger). Or follow along with the video and make a removable one like I did 🙂 https://youtu.be/sUAbZjM0R5w
Secure the pom to the top of the hat.
