Frequently Asked Questions
What is Red Heart Scrubby yarn and why is it special?
Red Heart Scrubby is a specialty yarn with a loofah-like texture built into the yarn itself… it’s made with polyester fibers that have a slightly rough, exfoliating surface. When crocheted into dishcloths or scrubbers, the yarn creates a scrubbing action that works beautifully for cleaning dishes, scrubbing vegetables, or exfoliating in the bathroom. Unlike cotton dishcloths that are soft and absorbent, Scrubby yarn has actual cleaning texture. It’s machine washable and dries quickly, making it very practical for kitchen use.
What patterns work best with Red Heart Scrubby yarn?
Simple, flat patterns in basic stitches! The scrubby texture is the star, so you don’t need complex stitch patterns to make beautiful, functional items. Simple single crochet, half double crochet, or basic stitch pattern dishcloths are perfect. Rounds or squares both work well. The collection of patterns in this post showcases different designs that work with the yarn’s texture. One note: because Scrubby yarn is slightly textured, very detailed stitch patterns can be harder to see clearly… keep it relatively simple and let the yarn do the work.
Are Scrubby yarn dishcloths actually more effective than regular cotton ones?
For different tasks, yes! Regular cotton dishcloths excel at absorption… soaking up spills, drying surfaces. Scrubby dishcloths excel at scrubbing… removing stuck-on food, cleaning textured surfaces. Many crafters make both types and use them for different kitchen tasks. The Scrubby texture is particularly good for scrubbing dishes, cleaning the stovetop, and wiping down counters where you need a bit of abrasion. For delicate surfaces or mopping up spills, a regular cotton cloth works better. Having both in your kitchen is the best approach!
How do I care for finished Scrubby yarn items?
Machine wash is the beauty of this yarn! Just toss them in the washing machine with your regular laundry. They dry quickly and maintain their scrubbing texture wash after wash. Replace them when the texture starts to wear down noticeably or when they show significant wear. Because they’re quick to make and affordable to yarn for, replacing kitchen scrubbers as they wear out is no burden… it’s a nice excuse to make more! Making a batch of several at once means you always have a fresh one ready.
Can I use Scrubby yarn with other yarns in the same project?
Yes! Combining Scrubby yarn with a regular cotton or acrylic (held together or alternating sections) creates dishcloths that have both scrubbing and absorption properties. Some crafters work the scrubby side as one section of a double-layered cloth with cotton on the other side. Alternating rows of Scrubby and cotton gives a cloth that both scrubs and absorbs in the same piece. Experiment and see what combination works best for your kitchen cleaning habits.
