Hat Construction – How to crochet the Mallow Mosaic Hat
The Mallow Crochet Mosaic Hat is constructed from the bottom up, starting with a slip stitch crochet band worked in rows and joined to form a ring. The striking mosaic pattern is then crocheted in rounds around the band, with the top of the hat decreased and gathered for a perfect fit. Add a pom-pom for a unique touch and extra flair.
The Mallow Crochet Mosaic Hat, a free pattern by Marly Bird, is crafted with WeCrochet Twill worsted weight yarn (100% superwash merino). But it would look great in Brava Worsted or even Brava Tweed.

The Twill yarn comes in 16 different colors, mix and match any color to get the look you want for your own mosaic crochet hat.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What skill level is this mosaic hat pattern?
This pattern is best suited for intermediate crocheters or adventurous beginners who are comfortable with basic crochet stitches and ready to explore mosaic colorwork.
Can I customize the size of this hat?
Yes! The pattern includes options for adult small, medium, and large. You can also adjust finished circumference by adding or removing pattern repeats to match your head measurement.
What yarn should I use for this pattern?
Worsted-weight yarn works beautifully here. Choose fibers like wool or wool-blends for warmth, or acrylic blends if you want easier care or summer weight options.
Do I need to carry two colors at once?
No! One of the great benefits of mosaic crochet is that you usually work with one color per row, which keeps yarn management simple while still creating beautiful, complex-looking texture.
Can men wear this hat too?
Absolutely! The mosaic texture and simple shape make this pattern versatile and gender-neutral. Choosing more neutral tones can make it especially appealing for men and gender-inclusive gifting.
Is there a video tutorial for this pattern?
While this pattern does not include dedicated videos, you can use our mosaic crochet primer videos to build confidence with color changes and technique.
