DIY Stitch Markers
Stitch markers are an essential too for all knitters and crocheters. They help us keep track of where we are in a pattern, special stitch sections of a pattern, stitch counts and more.
There are two types of stitch markers, locking and ring stitch markers. Typically, locking stitch markers are used for crochet but they can also be used for knitting, if their opening is large enough. Some locking stitch markers are similar to safety pins while others have lobster clasps to hook onto your project.
The biggest difference is a locking stitch marker is removable at any time, while a ring stitch marker needs to have stitch worked to the marker before it can be removed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these stitch markers any color I want?
Oh yes, you totally can! The great thing about using cotton cord is that you can dye it your favorite color. The tutorial even mentions using Kool-Aid for dying, and there’s a link to a great tutorial on how to dye your own yarn and cord with it!
What kind of cord should I use for these knot stitch markers?
Honestly, you have a couple of good options! The materials list suggests either cotton cord or suede cord. Both would probably work great for making these cute little knot stitch markers.
What do I need to make these stitch markers besides the cord?
So here’s the thing… besides the cord, you’ll need some scissors to cut it, and then jump rings and chain nose pliers to put it all together. If you want to make them colorful, grab some Kool-Aid too!
What’s the difference between locking and ring stitch markers?
Yes! That’s a great question. Locking stitch markers can be removed anytime, kind of like a safety pin. Ring stitch markers, though, you have to work a stitch to the marker before you can take it off.
Where can I share my finished knot stitch markers?
I would LOVE to see them! Please share a picture in the Marly’s Minions Facebook group. We’d be so happy to see how you’ve been inspired by this tutorial!
