All the Flavors of Caron Cakes Yarn
Caron Cakes are a popular yarn from Yarnspirations, sold only at Michaels. With a tidy cake design that lets you pull from the middle and a dozen different varieties of yarn, there’s a yarn here for everyone. Follow this Caron Cakes Yarn guide to find the one that’s right for you!

Why Caron Cakes?
Caron Cakes became popular when they were introduced a few years ago. Instead of balls or skeins, all of these yarns are sold in the “cake” form, more commonly seen when you wind yarn yourself on a ball winder. The cake form is easy to stack on a shelf, and best of all you can pull from the center for a tangle-free experience.
All Caron Cakes have color changes, with the vast majority of them forming stripes. That means just one ball can give a striped look to a wrap or scarf!
With a dozen of “flavors” available, all in several colors, you’re certain to find the Caron Cakes version that is right for you!

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I buy Caron Cakes yarn?
Caron Cakes are sold exclusively at Michaels… you won’t find them at other craft stores or online retailers. The good news is Michaels runs sales constantly, so keep an eye out for coupons and yarn deals. You can buy them in store or online at Michaels.com. Pro tip… if you’re making a project that needs multiple cakes, buy them all at once from the same dye lot so the colors match perfectly.
What’s the difference between all the Caron Cakes varieties?
So there are about a dozen “flavors” and they really do vary! The original Caron Cakes is a worsted weight acrylic/wool blend… great all-purpose yarn. Big Cakes give you more yardage in a larger cake. Cotton Cakes are perfect for warm weather projects. Cloud Cakes feel like fleece. Latte Cakes have a feathered texture. Macchiato Cakes are a cozy acrylic/wool blend. Each one has its own weight, fiber content, and personality… so pick based on what you’re making and how you want it to feel.
Can I use Caron Cakes for garments or just accessories?
You can absolutely use them for garments! The original Caron Cakes and Cotton Cakes are especially good for sweaters and tops because of their weight and drape. The self-striping color changes work beautifully in larger projects… you get that gorgeous gradient effect without having to weave in a million ends. Just keep in mind that the stripe widths change depending on your project size. A scarf will have wider stripes than a blanket because there are fewer stitches per row.
How do I avoid that awkward color change in the middle of a row?
Honestly… sometimes you can’t, and that’s totally okay! The color transitions in Caron Cakes are built into the yarn, so they happen where they happen. But if it really bothers you, here are some tricks. You can cut the yarn at the color change point and rejoin at the beginning of a row for a cleaner transition. Or lean into it! The gradual color shifts are part of the charm and most people find they look beautiful once the whole project comes together. Trust the yarn.
What are the best patterns to make with Caron Cakes?
Anything where you want that beautiful self-striping effect without the hassle of changing colors yourself! Shawls, scarves, and wraps are fantastic because the stripes really show off. Blankets are gorgeous too… especially simple stitch patterns that let the color do the talking. Hats, cowls, and even bags work beautifully. Marly has designed several patterns specifically for Caron Cakes, including the Riverside Crochet Bonnet and Scarf and the Wings of Hope Hat. Simple stitch patterns are your best friend here… let the yarn be the star.
