Team Spirit Knit Hat: Striped Stockinette Knit Hat Free…

Stockinette Knit Hat Free Pattern

I designed Donna’s Denver Football Hat with a clear mission in mind. Donna and I had made a bet about who would win the Super Bowl. It was Super Bowl 50; she was rooting for the Carolina Panthers whereas I was rooting for the Denver Broncos. The deal was that whoever won would wear a hat inspired by the others’ team. I started knitting this striped stockinette hat free pattern when the game began. I finished it by the time that the Broncos won the game. It’s a quick and easy striped knit hat pattern worked seamlessly in the round from the bottom up.

Denver Broncos Team Colors

The Denver Broncos team colors are navy and orange. Therefore, I chose Red Heart Soft yarn in Starry Night and Tangerine shades. Additionally, this striped stockinette knit hat free pattern uses white yarn. The result is easy striping showcasing team colors. Of course, you could make yours in whatever colors support your favorite professional, college, or school sports team.

Not a sports fan? That’s okay; choose any three colors you love most. Or think about holiday colors: red, white and green for Christmas or blue, white, and silver for Channukah, for example. Maybe red, white, and blue for 4th of July? Or seasonal colors – pastels for a springtime hat, the colors of autumn leaves for fall.

Easy Striped Knit Hat Free Pattern

This is a quick and easy knit hat free pattern. If you can knit and purl, then you can knit this hat. Most of the hat is made using stockinette stitch. The brim of the hat alternates knits and purls.

The only thing that you might not be used to as a beginner is the use of Kitchener stitch. However, I’ve described it completely in the pattern notes. Plus I have a Kitchener stitch video tutorial if you need one. Moreover, it’s simply used to seam the hat shut at the end. Therefore, it’s a nice skill to learn.

Add Pom Poms on Either Side

This hat doesn’t just have one pom at the top. Instead, it uses two poms, one on either end of the seamed-together top. This results in a striped stockinette knit hat free pattern that is fun, joyful, and perfect to wear to the game. You can use a Pom Pom maker to make both of these pom poms easily.

If you’re not making a sports-team hat, then you might opt to use another yarn color for the pom poms. For example, make the hat in shades of pink and red then use black or white for the poms. Have fun playing with the color options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What inspired this hat pattern?

So here’s the thing… this hat was actually part of a bet! I was rooting for the Denver Broncos and my friend Donna was for the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. The loser had to wear a hat inspired by the winner’s team… and the Broncos won! I whipped this up just in time.

What yarn did you use for the Denver Broncos colors?

Honestly… I used Red Heart Soft yarn in Starry Night and Tangerine, plus some white. It makes for such great striping! But you can totally use this pattern for *any* team colors, or even holiday or seasonal colors if sports aren’t your jam.

Is this hat pattern really beginner-friendly?

Yes! If you can knit and purl, you can totally make this hat. Most of it is just stockinette stitch, and the brim is a simple knit and purl alternation. The only part that might be new is the Kitchener stitch for closing the top, but I’ve explained it and even have a video tutorial!

How is the top of the hat finished?

Oh, this is the fun part… instead of just one pom-pom, this hat gets two! One on each end where the top is seamed up. It makes the hat look super cheerful and perfect for wearing to a game.

Can I customize the colors of this hat?

Absolutely! That’s the beauty of a free pattern like this. You can use any colors you love… team colors, holiday colors, seasonal colors, or just your favorite color combos. You can even make the pom-poms a different color than the hat!
