Turkey Trot 2025 | Ridgeway Crochet Cowl | Day 2
Hello, color-loving crochet crew! Welcome to Day 2 of the Ridgeway Crochet Cowl for the 7th Annual Marly Bird Turkey Trot Make-Along 2025. If Day 1 felt like dipping our toes into mosaic waters, Day 2 is where we start swimming with style. 🌈🧶
Today you’ll move into the main body section of the triangular shawl, and this is where the Ridgeway fabric begins to show its full personality — bold texture, delicious layers, and that “wait… I made this?!” energy.

Quick navigation note: If you ever need to find the next day’s link (or want to make sure you didn’t miss anything), the Turkey Trot hub post is your home base. All daily links for every project live there:

Main Body of the Triangular Shawl (the texture really starts to sing!) 🦃🧶
Day 2 is all about:
- starting the main body of the triangular shawl
- keeping the rhythm of odd/even row structure
- watching the triangle grow while stitches decrease neatly along one edge
There’s a steady cadence to today’s section. Once you lock in, it becomes the kind of crochet that feels like therapy with yarn.
Quick Supplies Check
You don’t need anything new today, but you do want to be ready:
- your shawl from Day 1
- yarn color A only
- hook listed in the pattern
- stitch markers if you like visual checkpoints
- a beverage you love and a playlist that makes you feel invincible
Read This Before You Start (Day 2 Notes + Robyn-ish Wisdom)
A few reminder nuggets that make today smoother:
- The triangular shawl decreases on one edge only.
So if your triangle feels a little “leaning,” that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do. - Odd rows are your calm rows.
They help reset your brain and give your fabric that clean structure between textured rows. - Even rows are your “pattern rows.”
This is where the magic stitches show up (clusters, dc2tog, and those delicious post details). - If you ever feel lost, pause and glance at the stitch diagram. It’s not just pretty — it’s your roadmap.

First fsc: Ch 2, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (forming a chain), yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (forming the single crochet)
Next fsc: Insert hook into base of previous stitch (in the “chain” space), yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (forming a chain), yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (forming the next single crochet). Repeat directions for desired amount of sts.
⭐️Half Double Crochet 2 Together (Hdc2tog): Yarn over hook, insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over hook, insert hook into next indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook. (1 st decreased)

NOTES
- You can substitute chains and single crochets for the set-up row of foundation single crochets
- The triangular shawl portion decreases on one edge only.
- Cowl is worked in turned rounds with the dc rounds on the RS.
- You can substitute joining your new color with a sl st, ch 1, and hdc2tog instead of a standing hdc2tog.
- You can substitute a ch 3 instead of a stacked dc.

Friendly Day 2 Guidance (what to watch for)
Today’s rows have a sweet little rhythm:
- Odd rows = sc rows + decrease at the end.
These keep your edges clean and your triangle shaping steady. - Even rows = texture + pattern repeats.
Give yourself a little extra time on these — they’re the show-stoppers. - Your stitch counts will drop gradually.
That’s correct. You’re building a triangle, so those decreases are doing their job.
If your fabric feels like it’s “tilting,” congratulate yourself — that’s the one-edge decrease shaping working exactly as intended.

FAQ: Ridgeway Crochet Cowl Day 2
➡️ Why am I decreasing only on one edge?
That’s what creates the triangular shawl shape. The pattern is designed to lean in one direction, so the triangle develops cleanly and predictably.
➡️ My stitch count doesn’t match the number listed — what should I check first?
Look at the placement of your decreases (sc2tog or dc2tog). One missing or extra decrease is usually the culprit. Fixing it now keeps your triangle crisp.
➡️ Even rows feel slower. Is that normal?
Yep! Even rows include the texture stitches and repeats, so they take more focus. Odd rows are your “reset rows” in between.
➡️ Do I need to follow the diagram and the written pattern?
Use whichever makes your brain happiest. The diagram is a fantastic visual roadmap, especially for mosaic and texture placement.

Final Pep Talk
This is the section where Ridgeway really starts to strut. You’re building bold texture and shaping at the same time — which is basically crochet superhero territory. Keep your rows steady, trust the stitch counts, and enjoy watching that triangle grow into something spectacular.
