Granny Square Books: Crochet Squares, Projects, and Patterns Galore
Granny squares never really go out of style. Of course, sometimes they’re trending hot (like right now!) Other times, they’re less pervasive in the fashion, home decor, and craft industries. And yet, because they’re such a classic design, it’s always good to keep them in mind for projects. In fact, the BiCrafty Bootcampers are working with a lot of them right now, and it’s helping to build their skills while they create fun new projects. For example, check out the granny square lined earwarmer these beginner crocheters just made! With that in mind, we wanted to round up some of the best granny square books out there.

What Is In Granny Square Books?
Before we get into the books themselves, let’s chat for a minute about what a granny square is. The classic granny square is a vintage quintessential design. It’s worked in the round, combining granny sets of 3 dc stitches each worked in spaces to grow the square as large as you want. This traditional granny square is the only one that I actually call a granny square.
However, granny square books would be really short if that’s all that they included. Therefore, they often also include all or some of the following:
- Other crochet squares worked in the round. Many people call these granny squares, too. Or variations – for example, a flower in the center might be called a floral granny square.
- Other shapes that use the granny set stitch of 3 dc with spaces. For example, you can crochet granny triangles, granny hexagons, granny rectangles, and more.
- Other crochet motifs that aren’t necessarily squares. A few people call any crochet motif a “granny square.” I’d venture to say that most people don’t call them that when they aren’t squares, but some people do.
- Garments, home decor, and accessories patterns designed using classic or non-traditional crochet granny squares.
