Knit Holiday Armadillo Amigurumi || Andy Stitchadillo

MEASUREMENTS

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: 2” [5 cm] wide by 8” [20.5 cm] long (nose to tail)

GAUGE: 1 leg = 1.5″ [4 cm’] in diameter by 2” [5 cm] tall CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge. Exact gauge is not critical to this project.

MATERIALS

Yarn: Red Heart® Soft Essentials™ [available in solid color 5 oz (141 g), 131 yd (120 m) balls], Grayhound (MC) 1 ball, Biscuit (A) 1 ball, Cocoa (B) and Cream (C) 10 yds each.

Yarn used in Sample: Berroco Comfort Chunky 5770 Ash Grey (MC) 1 ball, 5771 Driftwood Heather (A) 1 ball, 5741 Bitter Sweet (B) & 5703 Barley (C)  10 yds each.

Needles: US7 [4.5 mm]  DPNs (or long circular needles for magic loop) Note: Needle size is much smaller than recommended on ball band to make tight stitches for the armadillo.

Notions 

• Tapestry needle to bury the ends (learn how here)
• Polyester Fiberfill
• Straight Pins
• Stitch Marker (make your own)
• Scissors
• 12mm plastic safety eyes with plastic backings (for children 3 and older)
• Black embroidery thread or black yarn (for stitched eyes)

ABBREVIATIONS

St- stitch

K- knit

P- purl

LH- left hand

SPECIAL STITCHES

Magic Loop: Cast on the required number of stitches onto a circular knitting needle. Slide the stitches to the cable portion of the circular knitting needle. Pinch the cable in half and then pull to create a large loop. Arrange half the stitches on one knitting needle tip, and half on the other tip. Slip the last cast-on stitch from the bottom knitting needle tip to the top knitting needle tip. Slip the first cast-on stitch from the top knitting needle tip over the transferred stitch and onto the bottom knitting needle tip. Hold the knitting needle in your left hand, and pull out the knitting needle tip that holds the “tail end” so that the stitches that were on the needle tip are now resting on the cable. Begin working the stitches that are still on the opposite knitting needle tip as if you were working on straight knitting needles. At the end of the row, simply turn the work around and reposition the stitches so that half the stitches to be worked are on the knitting needle tip and the other half are resting on the knitting needle cable. Continue to work in this manner until desired length is reached.

k2tog: Knit 2 sts together (1 st decreased).

kfb: Knit into the front loop, then the back loop of next st (1 st increased).

m1: (make 1) Insert left hand needle under horizontal strand between st just worked and next st, from the front to the back, knit through the back loop (1 st increased).

Legs, body, head, and tail are worked in the round.  Use a marker to locate the first stitch on each round to keep track of your work. 

PATTERN

Legs (Make 4)

Round 1: With MC, Cast on 6. Join in the round with Magic Loop or on DPNs- 6 sts.

Round 2: Place marker before first st (throughout), knit- 6 sts.

Round 3: Kfb 6 times- 12 sts.

Round 4: Knit

Round 5: (K1, M1, K1) 6 times- 18 sts.

Round 6: Knit 

Fasten off MC, change to A

Round 7: (K3, M1, K3, M1, K3) 2 times- 22 sts.

Rounds 8-12: Knit

Round 13: (K2, K2tog, K3, K2tog, K2) 2 times- 18 sts.

Round 14: Knit

Round 15: (K4, K2tog) 3 times- 15 sts.

Round 16: Bind off 5, Knit 10- 10 sts.

Cut yarn and move remaining 10 sts onto a 2nd set of circular needles while working other legs. 

Body

Slide all legs onto LH needle, taking care to keep legs oriented with the knitside of the remaining 10 sts facing out.

Round 17: (K1, M1, K1) 5 times on each leg and join in the rnd with Magic Loop or on DPNs- 60 sts.

Rounds 18-20: Knit

Round 21: (K2, K2tog, K2) 10 times- 50 sts.

Round 22: Knit

Round 23: (K2, K2tog, K1) 10 times- 40 sts.

Rounds 24-26: Knit

Round 27: (K3, K2tog) 8 times- 32 sts.

Rounds 28-30: Knit

Round 31: (K6, K2tog) 4 times- 28 sts.

Round 32: Knit

Round 33: (K5, K2tog) 4 times- 24 sts.

Round 34: Knit

Round 35: (K2, K2tog) 6 times- 18 sts.

Round 36: Knit

Round 37: (K1, K2tog) 6 times- 12 sts.

Round 38: K2tog 6 times- 6 sts.

Cut yarn and thread through remaining 6 sts, pulling tightly to close hole. Fasten off and weave in yarn end. 

Match up and mattress stitch the seams of inner legs together, stuffing the body and legs firmly as you close the seams. 

Decide which two legs will be in the front of your armadillo’s body and mark with a marker if desired. 

With B and tapestry needle, embroider 3 vertical stitches over the  front edge of feet to create toe definition. Repeat on all 4 legs.

With C and a tapestry needle, satin stitch 4 groups of 4-5 stitches a piece to front of feet to create toenails. The embroidered B toe lines should line up between the nails. Repeat on all 4 legs.

Head 

Rnd 1: With A, CO 8. Join in the round with Magic Loop or on DPNs- 8 sts.

Round 2: Place marker before first st (throughout), knit- 8 sts.

Round 3: (K2, M1, K2) 2 times- 10 sts.

Round 4: Knit

Round 5: (K2, M1, K3) 2 times- 12 sts.

Rounds 6-8: Knit

Round 9: (K2, K2tog, K2) 2 times- 10 sts.

Round 10: Knit

Round 11: (K1, M1, K3, M1, K1) 2 times- 14 sts.

Round 12: Knit

Round 13: (K2, M1, K3, M1, K2) 2 times- 18 sts

Round 14: Knit

Round 15: (K2, M1, K3, M1, K2, M1, K2) 2 times – 24 sts.

Rounds 16-18: Knit

Round 19: (K3, M1, K6, M1, K3) 2 times- 28 sts.

Rounds 20-24: Knit

Round 25: (K2tog, K2) 7 times- 21 sts.

Round 26: Knit

Round 27: (K2tog, K5) 3 times- 18 sts.

Round 28: Knit

Round 29: (K2tog, K1) 6 times- 12 sts.

Round 30: Knit

Stuff head. If using plastic safety eyes, install eyes between rnds 17 & 18 with about 10 sts of space between them. 

Do not bind off. Thread yarn through remaining 12 sts stitches, pulling tightly to close hole. Fasten off and sew in yarn end. 

If not using safety eyes, use black yarn to embroider eyes onto head between rnds 17 & 18 with about 10 sts of space between them.

With A, draw a series of small stitches back and forth through the head around the edges of the eyes, pulling gently to sink the eyes into the head.

With B, sew 2 short stitches to the front of the snout for nostrils.

Head Plate

Round 1: With MC, cast on 16. Join in the round with Magic Loop or on DPNs- 16 sts.

Round 2: Place marker before first st (throughout), knit- 16 sts.

Round 3: (K1, M1, K1) 8 times- 24 sts.

Round 4: Purl

Round 5: (K2, k2tog, K2) 4 times- 20 sts.

Round 6: Purl

Round 7: (K1, k2tog, K2) 4 times- 16 sts.

Round 8: Purl

Round 9: Knit

Round 10: Purl

Round 11: (K1, k2tog, K1) 4 times- 12 sts.

Round 12: Purl

Round 13: Knit

Repeat Rounds 12-13 twice

Round 18: Knit

Round 19:  (K1, k2tog, K1) 2 times-  6 sts.

Rounds 20-21: Knit

Thread yarn through remaining 6 sts stitches, pulling tightly to close hole. Fasten off and sew in yarn end. 

Pin the head plate to top of head so the tapered end lines up with round 12 of the head. Sew down edges with MC using a back or running stitch. 

Ears (make 2)

Round 1: With A, CO 12. Join in the round with Magic Loop or on DPNs- 12 sts.

Round 2: Place marker before first st (throughout), knit- 12 sts.

Round 3: (K2, K2tog, K2) 2 times- 10 sts.

Rounds 4-6: Knit

Round 7: (K2, k2tog, K1) 2 times- 8 sts.

Rounds 8-9: Knit

Round 10:  (K1, k2tog, K1) 2 times- 6 sts.

Rounds 11-12: Knit

Do not bind off. Thread yarn through remaining 6 sts stitches, pulling tightly to close hole. Cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing. 

Flatten open edge of ear together and whip stitch shut. Pinch the lower corners at the base of the ear together and secure shaping with a few stitches. 

Position ears 4 rnds behind the eyes, directly next to the edge of the head plate and pin in place. With A, attach base of ears to the head.

Tail

Round 1: With A CO 8. Join in the round with Magic Loop or on DPNs- 8 sts.

Round 2: Knit

Round 3: (K2, M1, K2) 2 times- 10 sts.

Round 4: Knit

Round 5: Purl

Round 6: Knit

Round 7: (K3, M1, K2) 2 times- 12 sts.

Round 8: Knit

Round 9: Purl

Round 10: Knit

Round 11: (K1, M1, K3) 3 times- 15 sts.

Round 12: Knit

Round 13: Purl

Round 14: Knit

Round 15: (K2, M1, K3) 3 times- 18 sts.

Round 16: Knit

Round 17: Purl

Round 18: Knit

Bind Off all stitches, fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Close hole at tip of tail and weave in yarn end.

Using photos for reference, sew the open edge of the tail to the back of body.  Stuff tail before closing seam. 

Shell

Round 1: With MC CO 8. Join in the round with Magic Loop or on DPNs- 8 sts.

Round 2: Place marker before first st (throughout), knit- 8 sts.

Round 3: (K1, M1, K1) 4 times-12 sts.

Round 4: Knit

Round 5: (K1, M1, K1) 6 times- 18 sts.

Round 6: Knit

Round 7: (K2, M1, K1) 6 times- 24 sts.

Round 8: Knit

Round 9: (K1, M1, K2) 8 times- 32 sts.

Round 10: Knit

Round 11: (K2, M1, K2) 8 times- 40 sts.

Round 12: Knit

Round 13: (K2, M1, K3) 8 times- 48 sts.

Round 14: Knit

Round 15: (K3, M1, K3) 8 times- 56 sts.

Rounds 16-19: Knit

Bind off all stitches, fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Close hole at top of shell and weave in yarn end.

Place shell over the top of the body, Stitching over round 17, sew down edges of shell with grey yarn using a back or running stitch, allowing the last round of the shell to curl up slightly. 

Shell Ribbing

Double up MC on a tapestry needle and embroider 3 perpendicular rows of chain stitch to the back half of the shell, using photos for reference. 

Using the photos for reference, pin the back side of the head to the shell and body, directly above the front legs. Once you are happy with the placement, attach with A and a mattress stitch. 

Finishing

Cut 16-18 5” pieces of C and attach as fringe knots along sides of body under the edge of the shell. Trim to an inch long and separate the yarn plys with a tapestry needle for a fuzzy look.
