MEASUREMENTS

Finished Measurements

PLAY 3 is 11.5” [29 cm] wide by 12.75” [32.5 cm] tall.

Gauge 

20 dc by 11 rows = 4” [10 cm] x 4” [10 cm]

2 stitch repeats in Play 1 stitch pattern = 3.25” [8.3 cm]; use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

WeCrochet Comfy Fingering Weight (75% Pima Cotton/ 25% Acrylic, 218 yds / 200 m, 1.75 oz/ 50 g, CYCA# 1 sock/ super fine): #24817 Flamingo, 5 balls

Size E/4 (3.5 mm)

SPECIAL STITCHES 

3 Double Crochet Cluster (3dc-cl): *Yarn over hook, insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * twice more in same st, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook. 

Foundation Double Crochet (fdc): 

First fdc: Ch 3 (counts as dc), yarn over, insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (forming a chain), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (forming the double crochet)

Next fdc: Yarn over, insert hook into base of previous stitch (in the “chain” space), yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (forming a chain), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (forming the next double crochet).  Repeat directions for desired amount of sts.

Stacked Double Crochet (Stacked Dc): (Do not ch 1 prior to making the first sc) Sc in first stitch, insert hook in between two legs of the base, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook.

  • Optional:  If you do not want to start your project with foundation dc, you can chain instead and do one row of dc.
  • Play 3 is joined to Play 2 at the end of each RS row. The slip stitches that begin the WS rows count as turning chains and not stitches.

Row 1: (RS) 57 fdc, sl st to 3rd st on edge of Play 2, do not turn.  (note: bottom edge will be joined during Play 5, but if you don’t want to wait, you can seam the foundation to the corner of Play 2 now.)

Row 2: Sl st to next 2 sts on edge of Play 2, turn, dc in first dc, *ch 2, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, skip 1 dc, (dc, ch 3, 3 dc-cl) in next dc, skip 3 dc, dc in next dc; repeat from * across, turn, – 7 dc-cl + 14 ch-2 sps, 7 ch-3 sps. 

Row 3: Stacked dc in first dc, *ch 2, sc in ch-3 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, 3 dc-cl) in next dc, skip 2 ch-2 sps, dc in next dc; repeat from * across, skip next st on Play 2, sl st to next st on Play 2, do not turn.

Row 4: Sl st to next 2 sts on edge of Play 2, turn, dc in first dc, *ch 2, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 3, 3 dc-cl) in next dc, skip next 2 ch-2 sps, dc in next dc; repeat from * across, turn. 

Rows 5- 16: Repeat Rows 3-4

Row 17: Stacked dc in first dc, *ch 1, hdc in ch-3 sp, ch 1, (dc, ch 2, 3 dc-cl) in next dc, skip 2 ch-2 sps, dc in next dc; repeat from * across, skip next st on Play 2, sl st to next st on Play 2, do not turn.

Row 18: Sl st to next 2 sts on edge of Play 2, turn, dc in first dc, *dc in dc-cl, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next hdc, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc; repeat from * across, do not turn. – 57 dc.

Weave in ends.
