About Chic and Simple Perfect Hat
When making simple double crochet hats, I always start with the cuff. I prefer cuff to crown construction vs. crown to cuff. I think the cuff looks better when made separately and then the hat is worked from the side of it. So, that is where this hat began for me. I had one ball of Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™ yarn (who am I kidding, I have several balls!) and I the Marly’s Minions were requesting more one ball projects.
After playing around with some ideas I finally decided I wanted to make a hat. I began with a very simple single crochet blo ribbing stitch and worked a band up that would be large enough to go around my head. From there, I jumped into my double crochet hat pattern that I’ve used for years. You know the one I am talking about, you don’t have it written down, it is just in your head and you can do it without thinking? Sort of like making chocolate chip cookies…I know that recipe by HEART ❤️.
Anyway, after about three and a half hours I had a finished hat. I tried it on and I thought it looked pretty good…but that is when my son walked in my office and informed me he looked better in it. He took the hat from my hands and put it on his head. Grudgingly I had to agree that he looked better in the green hat than I did. Here is a picture, you can decide for yourself!
This easy to crochet beanie pattern is a free crochet pattern and it is available in multiples sizes from baby to adult.

Notes
- Directions are for size written for multiple sizes with the smallest size outside the parentheses and the larger sizes within. I recommend finding the size you want to make then highlighting the numbers that pertain to that size throughout the pattern. 3-6 months (6-12 months, 12-24 months, Toddler, Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large, Adult XLarge)
- Cuff of hat is crocheted flat back and forth.
- Stitches are worked into the side of the completed cuff to work the body of the hat.
- The body of the hat is in a continuous round.
- Just as an FYI…most adult hats are typically made in Adult Medium size. The Adult Large and XLarge are REALLY LARGE and should only be made for people with REALLY LARGE heads.
- The sample was made in size medium.
- Add your very own name tag for that finishing touch. This is where I purchase mine: https://bit.ly/CorkTags

Cuff of Chic and Simple Perfect Hat
NOTE: Update to pattern was made on Dec. 5th @ 8:33pm MT
Chain 11 sts
Row 1: Single Crochet (sc) in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain to end, ch 1, turn — 10 sc.
Row 2: Sc in the back loop only (blo) in each sc to end, ch 1, turn — 10 sc blo.
Repeat row 2 until the cuff measures approximately the size below slightly stretched.
Side Note: if you make the cuff the exact measurement of the head it will fall down so it is necessary to make it a little (let me stress little) snug to make it fit best. Yes, this means that when you have to make stitches for the body of the hat you will have more stitches than you have rows but it all works out nicely.

Finishing for the Chic and Simple Perfect Hat
When you are down to 8 stitches total, cut yarn leaving 10″ [25.4 cm].
Thread tail onto Bent Tip Tapestry Needle, working through the front loops only of the stitches remaining, weave the tail through all the stitches. Pull string like a drawstring to close the top of the hat.
Secure the tail on the inside of the hat making sure the hole at the top of the hat is completely closed.
Weave in any extra ends. Watch how Marly buries ends on YouTube.
